Nice day out on Botany

Went out on the Bay today in search of some bream. Caught a few and also managed to catch 3 legal snapper, a flathead and a tailor. We caught a small squid early in the morning so we decided to put it on the down rigger and see if there were any kingies around. Unfortunately It got nailed by the tailor. All the other fish were caught with strips of fresh yellowtail.

Would anybody please give me advice on rigging live baby octopus. Is it even worth down rigging occy's for Kingies. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I down rigged a small one today and it got taken by a bigger one which I gave to my old man as he loves occy.

Jew Fish, The High & The Lows

Hey all,

With a touch of JF fever headed out to Middle Harbour near Sugarloaf Bay to again chase some Jewies.
Only been living in Sydney for 2 year and just got a boat at the end of Jan, All be it a 3m Polycraft.

Caught a few live yakkas then headed out at around 5pm.
First hour was pretty slow. Got comfortable and set for a long haul.
Not long after id made up a floor bed I heard the drag on my Seagate 3500 peel then stop, dam, nope here it goes again.
I grab the rod and the fish takes off. A solid fight eventually leads to my first Sydney Jewie. It measured 65cm.
I decided to keep it as id told myself if I get a big one Ill let it go.

Things were pretty slow for the next hour or so, lost most of my livies to varies reason and was thinking about calling it quits.

I'd had one beast of a yakka the whole time out on a Saltist demon blood pe4 jigging rod with a Avet overhead.
Just as I finished pulling in a rod I heard the ratchet drag scream of. Finally the big yakka had been eaten.
I set the hooks and line peeled off. A beast of a fight then insured.
After clearing it of the anchor rope, then the motor I manager to tangle the one other rod still out.
Scrambling I managed to cut the tangled line and continue to do battle.
Got the fish to the surface I was amazed, I knew it felt big.
Grabbed the boggas and had a shot, missed, panic chuck the bogga and grab the net.
Drags backed off swipe dam it doesn't fit, dam the bottom snell hook hooked the net.
Commotion follows and fish is lost. Final verdict looked like the gill raker cut the leader.

What a night. Cant help but be happy with my first Sydney Jew and a feed but so close to my pb.
Looked a easy metre and a real beast along side a 3m boat. Would have loved a pic before sending it back.

Might have to get out again tom night. hopefully my mate will b free.

SPIT BRIDGE WITH LIVE PODDIES

HI Raiders,

I made my way down to the spit bridge and fished from the north side of the spit with live poddies around 10 - 15cm long.

Fished the high tide and 1 & 1/2 hours after the tide change hunting a land based Jewfish (only caught them from the boat).

No fish raised at all except for Bream.

Has anyone had success around the spit bridge for Jewfish this season?

Saturday success

Hey raiders,

Ducked out on Saturday with my wife for a fish and a pleasure cruise in our boat, launched at parsley bay around 5am and met a mate who was already gathering livebait inside Cowan creek, had a chat with him for a little bit while we got our own livies and we both hatched out our plans and decided to catch up a few hours later to see what's going on where, first stop was Jerusalem bay to have a drift around and see what was going on, nothing too special on the drift side of things a couple of just legal flatties that we thee back I'm not too keen on keeping them that size, so we drove out to flint and steel and sent 2 livies down an had some brekkie while we enjoyed the scenery, we got 2 salmon for the 2 livies we sent down which again we released as I've had my fill of fish cakes already lol... Then the wind started it wasn't too bad but it was cold even in the sunshine!!! So I decided to head up to the F3 bridge for a few hours and fish the turn of the tide up there, there was a controlled burn happening at brooklyn that we got some cool photos of on the way, at the bridge parked on our usual spot that I've been successful with in the past.. Cast out 2 prawn baits to feed the catfish lol!! And a livie rigged down in case of a Jew. Well sure enough first 2 fish over the side were catfish hahaha the next 2 were little baby Jews well under legal so back they went! Then the fun started... My livie started getting all nervous bouncing around and then it just stopped dead.... Just as I thought my bait had been theived.... WHAMMO!! I'm on few good runs and there was some weight so I called it for an average sized Jew but I was wrong was a big tailor of 63cm that went 1.48kg gutted I was so lucky to have hooked him in the top of the jaw cause I didn't have wire trace on without that bit of luck I'm sure the people driving over the bridge would have heard me ha ha ha, after I bled him and put him in the esky I thought surely I've been baited on the prawns by now!! As I go to reel in the first rod I notice a good amount of weight but no fight and I'm thinking great another stinking catfish but once it got near the surface it woke up and it turned out to be a bream that went 41cm and 1.185kg gutted which was a PB for me I was stoked!! After that it went a bit quite I did manage another small Jew of around 30cm quickly released then another good bream of about 35cm so in all it wasn't a day that would set any records but it was relaxing and we caught some good fish as well. Plus it was comp weekend for my fishing club so it was great to get some good points up on the board!! I'll post some pics up tomorrow of the fish.

Mothers Day quick sess

After a long absent from rock fishing because ive been busy learning on the new boat I decied to do a quick rock hopping session at eastern suburbs ledges with a mate. Got to out spot at 5.30am and and it wasnt that windy yet. Got the jigs out and jigged just before sunlight hit and we managed these 2 squid. Didnt use them as live bait as I promised my niece I would bring some home if i got any. So we begain to spin and my arm got score because I havnt done this for almost 6months. Got no hits so i moved to another spot to try and get some blackfish but only managed this drummer which went 38cm although not that big it went hard. My friend then comes over to tell me that he got a nice size salmon so i leave the luderick fishing in the hope to get a salmon as because my wife can make nice soups out of this under rated fish (not under rated by me thats for sure) only to be disappointed as there were no more bites. The wind by now picked up so we called it a day and headed home before the mums woke up to a windy mothers day.

Garfish

I was at a wharf near manly on Saturday and Well plenty of Garfish during the early hours of the morning... 3am but as soon as the sun rose, they were all gone.... Why ? I burlyed and all that we were plagued with was yakkas and cormorants. A Guy Next to me kept having his liveies stolen by 2 cormorants, it was very entertaining. Anyway after not seeing any garfish around I caugt a fews small Bream and decided to give them to a very patient Pelican. Geesh he sure can take a whole bream in one gulp. Left at 8am with nothignt o show for it. Also Tried for Squid earlier on 2am - 4am and absolutely nothing, not even a follower.

Hey has anyone been able to successfully catch garfish during the night?

Met another raider at the wharf and hope he had better luck?

Finally got my Kingie (LBG)

Well I've finally got my legal kingie. It's taken 2 years of early mornings, a few bust offs and a whole lot of by catch but I've done it. So for all you landbased guys...put the time in and it will come. I feel I have been doing everything right for so long and that little bit of luck just never went my way. I guess I'm pretty lucky in other parts of my life instead.

Any ways here's my report.
So it's my usual Sunday morning. I get up at 4am and pack the car to hit my old faithful wharf in the east. It was bitterly cold this morning but I check the water temp and it's 22º so I was feeling optimistic about a getting my kingie today. I get to the wharf and burely up...the yakkas were playng hard ball today and only got 5 before the sweep and trevors took over. So I chuck a yakka out on a float and pick up my jig stick and start prospecting for squid. After about 10 min I pull up a small iphone size cuttlefish. There's something about cutlefish that I like and would normally chuck him back but i'm on a mission. So I pull in my yakka and let him go an then double hook the little cuttle and chuck him out. I watch it land then walk about 3 paces to get my squid stick again. I turn to check the float only to see it disappear below the surface. I drop the rod and race over to my arching 9 foot 8kg rod (matched with pfluger salt 50). I grab the screaming rod and set the hook. I felt a lot of weight but not the blistering runs I've had before...those are unstoppable. So I feel i'm in with a chance. The fish had not raced out to the morrings...he was fighting close...plus I wasn't giving him much option as I tightened the drag up. After doing a few laps of the wharf he was tiring. He'd been battling for 5 minutes. I don't carry a net when I fish this place so after a few heart pounding moments I hauled him on to the deck via the 40 pound leader. It was bitterly cold and windy 7am...not a soul around to hi five me. It didn't matter I'd achieved my goal. So I choofed off home and have about 2kgs of fillets in the fridge.

On another note my girl has won a day out with ET fishng this Thursday and she's be goading me about how she'll get a kingie before me...oh how wrong she was.
