Hook Advice for Trevally

Hi everyone,

I've recently been concentrating my fishing efforts on fishing for silver trevally as they seem to be around in large numbers at the moment. My technique for trevally is pretty straight forward and seems to be effective. I burley with pilchard cubes and within 5 minutes I have a school of trevally feeding. I have then just been using un-weighted pilchard cubes and I get bites every cast. I have been getting some good trevally up to 48cm, however my problem is with my hook selection.

I started off using a mustad 1/0 long baitholder hook (my favourite hook for bream, whiting, trevally, etc). With this hook I was getting an ok amount of hook ups, however I seemed to be pulling the hooks on a lot of fish due to their soft mouths.

I spoke to my local fishing shop and they suggested trying a 1/0 circle hook as this would hook them in the corner of the mouth and would solve my problem of pulling hooks. I have now tried the circle hooks for the last few sessions and although the trevally I have caught have been hooked in the corner of the mouth, my hook up rate has dropped dramatically. I think the 1/0 circle hooks are too big for the small mouths of the trevally.

So my question is, which hooks do people find most effective for the small soft mouths of trevally? I am starting to get very frustrated having a school of trevally feeding and not being able to catch many.

Hey mate

Your right about them in numbers

I use a size 6, 4, 2 for trevally and on a normal session, me and sydfisher get about 20 between sow and pigs reef, HMAS sydney and Watson bay

We use cube pillies and it is very effective

When you get the bites, give it a short little hit and should hook up well

Not a big strike but just a strong little one

Also, I found I hook more fish and better hook up to when I strike to the side not striking up

Also, hooks are bait holders

Try using a fine gauge hook in one smaller size than the 1/0 I think it's size 1 the bait holders are great and so are the suicide hooks but make sure there fine gauge to get a better hook up

Also use slightly smaller bait and give the fish longer to take the bait and use a lighter drag play the fish and use a landing net and you shouldn't lose any fish

I would try some better hooks. I don't like Mustad hooks. They are not as sharp as a VMC or Gamakastsu baitholders. Maybe your bait size is a bit big for the fish to get it into their mouths.

Try mustad demon circle hook size 4...or gama size 6...works all the time...

I like Owner Owner Mosquito hooks.I use various sizes 2,1,1/0.For a better price on these get them on line from the good old US of A in the pro pack range.

I use gamakatsu worm hooks with no offset in a 1 or 1/0. They are fine gauge. The main reason you pull hooks with trevally is because their soft mouths tear. So make sure you maintain even pressure all the time but not too much. Make sure you have a nice long leader, like a rod length if using braid to assist with shock absorption and less mouth tearing. The circles should hookup in a stronger part of the mouth but you may want to fish a smaller size and make sure you don't strike. Just wind smoothly until the rod is loaded and you're on.
