G'day Raiders,

My young bloke desperately wanted to test out his new set up (Daiwa gen black itchy twitchy and Daiwa Freams 2000) so we went out to Glenbawn to try for a fish off the bank.

We loaded up with a heap of lures and I dug some worms and we headed off. The weather was perfect, sun shining and the lake was glass. We cooked a bbq and threw a few plastics about in the dead trees for no luck so we decided to soak some worms.

Bites were hard to come by but it was such a perfect day that I thought a fish would be a bonus. I didn't really like our chances tbh, winter can be tough at times out here. Suddenly my young fella is yelling out in the distance "I'm on! I'm on!" The reel was screaming and I picked it for a monster Carp but after a hard battle in the dead timber, up came a whopper Bass!

This fish was the fastest Bass I've ever seen and the pics don't do it justice, this thing was the shape of a Yellowbelly! I called it for 48cm but it went 44cm and a PB Bass for him, he was stoked and it was an awesome way to christen his new set up.

I also left my rod in the holder and walked off and of course a huge Yellowbelly smashes the worms. After a big tussle I pulled the hook but not before seeing it. 50cm fish for sure. We didn't get another fish but it was still a great day.

Cheers

Dave

Nice Catch Dave!

I caught one the same size under Roseville bridge last summer.. They put up a decent fight.. Is there much difference between and EP and a bass?

I've never caught an EP mate but I know they spend more time in the salt and they have a different shaped head and deeper through the body. I'm pretty sure they also reach a larger maximum size than Bass. I'm told they breed with Bass at times which can make it very hard to tell them apart.

We catch quite a few EP (and bass) in the Macleay and Maria River systems - in my experience the EPs fight better - they seem a lot stronger and possibly even hit harder. I think it is due to their tougher more competitive environment where there is a lot of bigger stuff around. I find the best (and only) way to tell them apart in the quick time between catch and release is in the indentation on the forehead - it is quite pronounced once you know what you are looking for.
