NSW commercial fisherman battling depression

Recommended Posts

It's never black and white:

"The industry has been cut back from 4,000 fishermen 30 years ago to just over 1,000 today."

I am sure that 30 years ago, the amount of fish 1 fisherman took from the water was less then 1 fisherman is taking out today.

What about the Volume or weight that is being netted? About the species?

But Ms Howard is right in regards to the pressure the environment is under, from pollution, construction near water, stress from water traffic, fish farms.

Those things need to be looked at too.

That's called catch per unit effort (CPUE). It is often interpreted as an indicator of fish abundance. If there are more fish around then they are easier to catch. Are you saying there were less fish around 30 years ago?

PS they do keep track of actual landings as well.
