Sydneyfisher12
hi raiders today we went fishing on the harbour we arrived at drummoyne at 9am and headed out we tried at the goat island marker for nothing and then the marker at clifton gardens for nothing but clifton was showing some good marks anyway we were heading out the heads and i spotted a bust up put in a good cast and im on it was a 55cm salmon we tried for a bit longer but got no more because there were about 6 other boats fishing it casting massive metal lures. we moved to north head i got a big sargent baker on a jerk shad we were heading back in and spotted a massive bust up i used a bubble float filled with water (that i could cast a mile) and then about 1.5m of 6lb fluro and a small fly i was getting hits but no hook ups but i then put in the perfect cast and i was on it took a massive run and took my 100m of 4lb braid in 20 seconds and i was all the way down to the backing i got a bit of line back and then the fish just would not come up for about 10mins i didn't get a single wind on the reel i slowly gained and i wasn't sure if it was a salmon maybe a king because it didn't jump i had it close to the boat and i pulled the hook i went back to where they were but a guy was casting a 200g metal that put them down he might as well of been throwing rocks at them i saw another bust up in a bit more but they would only come up for a second 100m away so it was impossible we headed into balmoral to see if we could get a feed of squid but we had no luck we moved to watsons and i tried a new bottom ship jig i bought and i got 1 flathead 40cm two tailor at 40cm and other small rubbish fish it worked so well we got a few yakkas on bait and decided to downrig we did for about an hour and got nothing but saw some good marks but got none we then headed back in we got to the ramp and it was so packed some stupid people on the end had a sail boat and there mates boat behind it just causally setting up there whole boat for the whole time i was there they pretty much took up one whole side of the ramp because it was low tide anyway we got out but they were still doing there boat im hoping the kings will move in soon the water temp was 19.5-20.7 cheers sydneyfisher12

fragmeister
Hi Buddy, Good report, sounds like an eventful day... maybe they were trying to jag the salmon with those big metal lures! So, would you call the bubble float fly a successful technique? Cheers Jim
Sydneyfisher12
So, would you call the bubble float fly a successful technique? yes its very successful and once you ad water to the float you can cast it so far

mchngun
I had the exact same thing happen to me last Wednesday while chasing the big salmon school around North Head, hooked one on 10lb braid and it took a blistering first run and went down deep, didn't jump at all so i don't think it was a salmon. After about 15minutes of trying to gain line it eventually spat the hook, still don't know what it was.

DezM
Tried for them on Saturday and as manny have suggested they are very fussy. I tried a smelt 3 inch bass minnow but the bait is even smaller than that. My mate caught a keeper trevally underneath the school. on the smallest metal lure (4g?). Exicitng watching the "spa bath" of them feeding on the surface. Dez
andysinmexico
Too many bones for the baker to be palatable, have heard people rave about them but not my cup of tea.

I've got a few good Trevally under them. Can be really annoying sometimes and other boats casting massive lures don't make it easier What boat where you in
The Poacher
That float/fly thing - fantastic innovation. I am borrowing that one for sure. How many times have I thrown 3 inch lures at Salmon only to be rejected. Great tip Thanks The Poacher
Krispy !
That fish you lost definitely sounds like a king or maybe even a samson fish as there have been a few around lately, Good work on the sambos
BobFly
I think I saw you out there. I was in a quinny freedom sport 500 fly fishing with my girlfriend. We got a salmon each. I wouldn't be surprised if what you lost was a salmon - the gf took a full 15 minutes to land hers compared to a usual less than 5 minutes and almost lost the rod in the process. I took a fair while on mine too. They are in very good condition, but we might just be out of practice - we were away last summer due to travel. bombora
Agree with Bobfly. Out yesterday and the North Head sambos seemed supercharged. Fat fit fish, some pretty decent sized ones among em and all in prime condition plus maybe ideal water temps for salmon and windy oxygenated water gave em extras ooomph. They took FOREVER to get in. Also thought on one or two occasions we'd hooked a stray rat king among the salmon.....until they jumped or finally came boatside. Lotta fun on a day Longy and the reefs were dead as door nails. bombora
PS water temp down to 18.5 to 18.8.
jimmy72
sounds like a great day .. the bubble float idea is good, also works with trout either slow retrieved or drifted in the river of lake. in the harbour a small fly 1m behind a popper or 1m behind a swivel & sinker works a treat when the fish are fussy. when the fish are on the small bait i rig that up usually for the boys and girls on my boat that cant cast a fly rod. Guest no one
Bubble float with a fly? Man... when I was 12 years old Living in the Shetland Islands (Top of Scotland) that's exactly how I used to catch Atlantic Mackerel and Pollock. Load it with water - watch it fly 100 meters on a cast and sit back and wait for the rod to bend. Good to see you're inventive!
