Boat Ramp Follies

So I am at the boat ramp after fishing yesterday and there is no one around except for a guy with a yak.

There are only 3 trailers in the car park so I pulled the boat out into the boat prep area just to take care of the post trip stuff.

I would only do this if there was no one around but thats not the point of the story.

I was just taking the bimini down and this bloke swings his car around the road up to the ramp and positions himself to reverse down into the water. Everything about this guy speaks about the excitement and joy of an evenings fishing.

He is singing boisterously, he has a smile on his face from ear to ear... even his car engine sounds excited about delivering his pride and joy down to the ramp for a much anticipated fishing adventure.

Except there is just one thing wrong... there is no trailer on the back!

The guy starts reversing, looks into his rear view mirror and his face drops. Joy turns to complete disappointment and then instant frustration and culminates in blind rage.

"YOU F$%N IDIOT" he screams at himself " YOU FORGOT THE BOAT AGAIN!

He roars away in his car presumably to get his boat and the Yak fisherman and I are left in stunned silence.

Now its amazing enough that you could actually drive somewhere and not be aware of whether the boat and trailer are on or not but according to this guy he forgot it AGAIN.

Hilarious!

Cheers

That's is absolute gold!! Wish I could have seen that!! Although the thing is if the boat isn't on the trailer where the hell does he keep it??

Sorry, confused the issue there. I change the post to fix that. There was no trailer at all!

How can you not hook up a boat and trailer?

Is this guy a f^%$#&t, or were you on 'Funniest Home Video' or some other show?

I think he was a loonie.

How can you drive any distance without being aware of whether the boat and trailer were behind you.

It's in the rear view mirror, you can feel that you are towing, you are checking as you turn corners and make sure you stick inside the lane.

Nevertheless, it happened and it was the funniest thing I have seen in a while.

Very funny, but obviously a gee up or the guy was out on a day pass from some institution :D

Well, It happened so I am with you...

I think the poor bugger was a few bricks short of a load... actually, a car short of a boat!

Well I have my own story about my boat launch on the weekend.

I like to pick quiet ramps just to avoid any pressure from watching eyes.

Anyway, I was flying solo at tascott, got everything lined up and reversed in. No issues

Got out to push the boat in but wasn't down far enough, so I backed in a little further

but was a bit to brisk on the brakes, and the boat launched itself so i ended up jumping

in to grab it. Lucky my mobile was in my bag and not my pocket.

Ended up getting cut a bit on the oysters and banged my shins the trailer cause the ramp was super

slippery but I had the painter so all was good. I then walked down to the end of the wharf

and bugger me, the painter came off the bollard, so I'm standing on the wharf, dripping wet, covered in blood

holding a painter while my boat drifts off.

Limped over to my car (bare feet and super sensitive) , drove out of the ramp, parked the car and trailer (first time too)

put my shoes on then ran over to my boat, where a nice stranger was trying to grab it for me

and it floated back. He held it and I was able to get on and tie it up and then I could take it out.

Quite funny now, but at the time .....

My shin still hurts!

If you are reading and you were the guy that helped me, thanks very much!

Now that's pretty funny too!

Don't feel too bad ...we've all had boat launches that went bad but at least we remember the boat!

Cheers

Haha, sorry but that is funny!!! Have your launching skills improved???

This is really bad but during tourist season up here, especially if there's a westerly wind blowing. We go down to little beach, sit back and have a few beers and watch the novices try and retrieve their boats. Some of the best evening entertainment you'll ever see! And free!

But if you are up here having the same trouble, yell out fishraider and I'll come and help! :)

Cheers scratchie!!!

I think I posted something about this before at some stage and its a little embarrassing to relate in again in previously undisclosed detail but here goes...

I remember during the very early hours of the morning on day last year I had just launched the boat and it was tied up at the wharf.

Because it was at night and I was by myself I did put the life jacket on as a precaution. It's a little spooky at this time of the morning and the area is a little seedy so I am always aware of any cars or shadowy figures in the background. I went back to the car to grab something and well... sometimes your mind plays tricks on you and I was sure I could see someone hanging around in the shadows so I felt a little nervous... you know the feeling you get when you a walking alone at night and you imagine someone is behind you? Well I well and truly had that feeling.

Anyway, I thought it best to jump on the refuge of the boat so I quickly untied her and got on board. As I got on I'm still thinking there might be someone following me. I was not aware at the time but as I stepped over the side of the boat the activation chord for my self inflating life jacket got caught up where the Bimini poles meet and activated it. Well as it quickly inflated and I felt a restriction around my body and neck and bugger me if it didn't feel like some homicidal maniac had grabbed me from behind!

Well , I think I let out a muffled yell (I hope not a girlie squeal) but very quickly realised what it was and sat there embarrassed thanking Christ there was nobody there to witness my ridiculous antics.

OMG! I am reliving the embarrassment just telling the story again!

Cheers

Jim

How is that Little Beach ramp, now, Scratchie? Been bogged lately? :) (I can't talk - I've been bogged there!). Has Council done anything about it yet? I'd like to know, as I've finally bought a little place at Shoal Bay (investment place - hope to move there in a few years) and Little Beach is a lot closer than Soldiers Point ramp!

I have had my share of boat ramp follies involving swims after boats and/or cuts on oyster covered rocks. I haven't forgotten my boat, though! I have forgotten bungs, fishfinder/gps, fuel tank, net, bait to name a few things. At Port Stephens in May, twice (well, I thought twice), I forgot the remote control to my Minn Kota iPilot. The first time I went back to Soldiers Point ramp from Corlette wreck to get it. The 2nd time, I'd launched at Little Beach (the day you and I got bogged!) and got to the bait ground at Mrs Murphys only to find I'd left the remote behind again. The missus was not impressed as I turned the boat around and headed back inside to go back to the ramp a 2nd time! I got to the car and it wasn't there! I walked back to the boat and the damn thing had been on the floor of the boat behind my seat the whole time! A comedy of errors that day!
