Blue Marlin - Saturday 28th March - Sydney

Hi All...

Headed out from Botany Bay at around 9:00am Saturday morning with a plan to find a significant temp break a few miles North-East of Browns, which was showing up on the charts. We started trolling at around the 12-Mile, water temps looked good getting into 23’s… then dropped back to 22’s after Browns.. we forged on and found high 23’s 6 nM North-East of Brows, and things looked good. We found scattered bait from the shelf, with plenty of reports of Marlin strikes on the radio closer inside the shelf (most appeared to be Stripies.... with a lot of them throwingng the hooks).

First strike at 3:45pm saw a rampaging blue hit the short-rigger, and start tail-walking away from the boat. He took a couple of hundred metres from the 50W before everything went limp… the double snapped around the swivel… a period of loud cursing followed.

Second strike at 4:00pm again saw a rampaging blue hit the short-rigger, and start tail-walking away from the boat. He took a couple of hundred metres from the same 50W, and then continued to do so with great speed…

He then decided to go deep…. An hour later and we had him to the boat.. another 15 mins and we had the trace in hand…

My first marlin in 5 years... with dozens of fruitless trips since then.....

Stats:

Blue Marlin

Short Length: 2.3m (Charts call it 110kg..we called it 150kg.. it had a girth that resembled John Candy in his prime )

Gear: 24kg

Lure: ScentBlazer Slant Head Big Purple thing (purchased 12 months back via a FishRaider package deal.. it’s in the attached photo)

Cheers,

Ed.

That's unreal, congrats, so pleased for you guys, we got one 2 days before which looks around the same size and almost in the same spot, a few miles E of Browns.

I called ours around 150kg as well give or take a bit.

And on one of our SB lures, even better!

Peter
