George's river breambos and flatties

Hi everyone,

So the plan this morning was to catch some mulloway and breambos in the georges river on Sps, inspired by Stewie's and crew recent success in the cooks. Launched the yak at around 630am and made my way to some deeper holes that I have sounded over the past 6months. I have caught a few small soapies here before but was hoping for a bigger specimen. I must say it was a tough morning on the feet and hands. Both were frozen, which made it difficult pedalling and casting but I got there in the end. Fog rising from the water gave it an eerie atmosphere which I took as a goood sign. Was using a squidgy paddle tail. Around 50 casts later nothing except a snag and I had to rerig which took me 15mins because my fingers were no longer working.

Sun had risen. I lost hope and changed over to targeting some breambos by casting at rocky drop-offs with zman grubs on 1/12 - 1/16. The george's has been very productive this season for bream and I caught 7 legal bream between 25 - 31 and a few undersize. Most were caught at the change of tide. Kept 3 for the table. Getting a bit sick of eating bream lol.

After getting a fix on catching some bream I decided to give the jewies another chance and started casting away at drop-offs with another paddle tail sp. First cast I'm snagged. But the snag is steadily coming to the yak like dead weight, no fight whatsoever. It surfaces and is a nice 65cm flattie (beats my previous pb on SP by 15cm). My lure was inhaled and on closer inspection I can see why there was no fight. She was deep gilled hooked and bleeding heavily so I cut my line but could not revive her. Chances of survival were not great so I decided to keep it for the table. Normally I would put fish into the keeper net over the kayak not the water but because she was lifeless I went to put her in over the side. She gave a good whack to my hand and swam off to freedom. Hope she survives. I continue casting and soon come up with another flattie at 44cm that had almost reached my nuts with it's head shakes.

While I took a toilet break. I noticed some rustling in the grass and spotted an echidna digging away. Been sometime since I have seen one in the georges national park.

So in the end it was a good session. That bigger mulloway still eludes me, so the journey continues.

Cheers,

Joe

Awesome report mate. Georges has definitely been consistent this year, good bag there. I know the endless jew search, just gotta keep plugging! Might try tee up that session soon :)

Nice report joe! You didn't get your jew but still sounds like a productive session. It's definitely eerie being on a yak without much light. At least the jetskis weren't out there! Well done :)

Cheers scratchie!!!

Great report Joe.

When my fishing partner pulled out yesterday I made the decision that it was too bloody cold to be out sitting in a boat and here you are pedalling around in a yak.

That's the only thing I don't like about fishing from a kayak. A flathead getting loose and swinging it's spikey head near your jatz crackers !!

Apart from that, a good catch.

Well done bud, nice feed of bream there. Gotta love those Zmanz!

Thanks man, they are so convenient as well. 1 sp lasts me the whole session love it.

Haha when I was out there I was having second thoughts. Might need to invest in some good neoprene socks and gloves!

thanks scratchie, must have been too cold even for them! Not a single one the whole day.

Joep, good on u for getting out for a flick, I got small flaties on blades last week around Como however none on plastics, what depth/ jighead were you using chasing Jews? Great size flaty for this time of year... She must of pounced in her sleep considering the fight!

Dave, sorry mate for pulling out, this sat for blacks AND flats?

Jeff, too dam cold for the JetSki crew, we can fish the river in the sun these days, I'm coming up to the bay in August, leave some fish for me!
