5ky
Hi all, Does anyone know any good location with a lot of reefs to target snappers/morwongs..etc that is close to the rocks? Planning to use my drone to cast it out about 300-500m from shore. I'm sure there are alot of good boat locations but i cannot cast that far without a boat And if any body asks, yes i had some success with it especially casting outer normal distance with my drones. Bzker
I don't know of any spots but I do own a DJI P4, how do you rig it up to firstly connect the line and then release it ? Sent from my SM-G928I using Tapatalk
recurve
Bellambi Reef could be reached with a drone. Reckon you would catch a lot of sergeant baker and sweep before you get a snapper. Be better trying for Salmon and Jews behind deep gutters on surf beaches. Dropping on to reefs from shore I would think will get you snagged a lot as well. I used to do some fishing with a torpedo. We would point it into the waves, set 25 hooks and send it out a 1 or 2 kilometers off a surf beach. Wait for 2 hours then haul it in on a winch of sorts. Caught Snapper, Gurnard, Gummy Sharks. Snapper don't just live on reefs. They like a dig around in the sand as well. This video is proof that you can get them off surf beaches. You never seem to catch them off surf beaches in boats but on rigs like this set for a couple of hours you get them and you can do well. This is NZ styles but I reckon the fish here will forage along sand. I would try it off beaches rather then reefs and leave it out for ages. You need the special long line hooks . Blackfish
That far out from most Sydney rocks you may have a problem with boat traffic running over you line.

Easiest way is get a coat hanger and make a L shape line. when u fly out it drags the line out.. when you want to drop just spin the drone 180 degree and fly back, the line will all off. You should practice at your backyard first though haha.. i seen those youtube video where the drone gets tangled.. then its goneskies... Bellambi Reef could be reached with a drone. People get really into it and hook up the winches and Torpedos to Quad Bikes. Very exciting pulling it in. Best I have done is 12 Snapper on a 25 hook rig. Kids go mental, the excitement is total overload for them, You can hire them as well, no license or anything like that needed. A lot of hire shops have them. BrassRoots
It's not really fishing at that point is it though. That's more harvesting than fishing.

Just meant to show that Snapper also graze the sands off beaches but the only effective way to catch them off beaches that I have seen is long lines. Twinfisher 4.9
Sorry, but that is simply not right. But it is New Zealand, so I guess anything goes.
Day's Fishin
I have seen that on one of the fishing shows on tv. Highly illegal here and should be there as well. We call fishing a sport and that sure is not sport! Jeff
recurve
I have seen that on one of the fishing shows on tv. Highly illegal here and should be there as well. We call fishing a sport and that sure is not sport! Jeff This is illegal in Aus, No more than 3 hooks. Don't have a problem with that and I love the fishing scene here. I am an Aussie as was born here but family moved to NZ when I was young. I don't understand why you say it should be illegal in NZ? Why would you say that without knowing anything about it? . NZ has very responsible fishing practices and management compared to most countries. Aquaculture is a major resource and is fiercely protected. Fact is not everyone can afford a boat and why can't people who can't afford a boat have the same opportunity to gather fish like people who can afford boats can. I mean if it is in keeping with a sustainable fishing policy of course which in NZ it is. The other incredibly popular way of long lining from a beach is using kites (This is very popular) and taking out lines on a Kayak. It would be a shame to ban this in NZ I believe. Like I said, every family has the ability to invest about $1000 dollars for a Kite Set up or $3000 for a basic Torpedo Set up and spend 4 hours on the beach with the family with a good chance of getting a haul. As said before, not everyone can afford a boat so it's a great thing that can be shared by all, not just the middle class and the wealthy who do it as a 'Sport'. NZ has different values as people which, granted, would not be fully understood outside of NZ. Kai Moana is a way of life for many over there. In regards to it not being a sport....well I think it is as much of a sport or hobby as casting a line. Sure you have 25 hooks but it's still fishing. You don't always catch fish and you lose gear and you catch rubbish fish. You go out with the Adrenalin and excitement of fishing and as much time and effort is dedicated to rigs, set ups, techniques etc. In my book it ticks all the boxes. Understand if you disagree. But that does not mean it is wrong of NZ to allow this and NZ'rs to love doing it.

I don't get were your coming from with the ( middle class and wealthy ) crap? $3000 can buy you a good little fishing boat, and your talking about a BASIC Torpedo Set Up costing that! If fishing is not a sport than what is it? What I was referring to was a line with 25 hooks or more set on terminal tackle and then having it hauled up a beach that would give fish no chance of survival after being skulled dragged up a hot beach. Most people I know fish for sport, with the added prize of taking home a couple of fish for Dinner, majority of fish get released and have a good chance of survival, because of the way they are caught and handled before release. I do not understand if you disagree. I believe it is wrong for NZ or any other country to allow fish to be caught by long lining and that is close to what they are doing!
