At this stage I am proposing a Sat and Sunday - theory and the following Sat or Sun morning for the exam. I was given a handout from marine rescue last weekend who offer the course including exam 8am to 2pmDepends what level of licence you want, how much instruction you want etc.I did mine through Botany Marine Rescue, Wednesday nights 2 hours at a time over several weeks. 8am - 2pm, is 6 hours. Not everyone can keep their concentration levels up for that long straight. Some people need a break between learning and an exam. Steve I think you are referring to the MROVCP which is commonly run over 6 hours. The content in the MROCP is about 10 hours worth of theory. There is no RTO that would not separate the sessions into small ones. There is a lot to learn and it is challenging. I have organised several of these over the years and put through about 100 raiders, including myself!! Cat-As-Trophy and myself are the only lady raiders that have it. The reason we did it over a weekend was that it was easier to do two days of 5 hours and then sit the exam after a week to go over it and learn it ready for the exam. It can be delivered in 2 hour sessions over 5 nights or in any other way as long as 10 hours are covered. The AMC has strict rules about how the course is conducted and run. Invigilators have to ensure exam is run etc etc Those raiders that attended enjoyed being with other raiders and we had a break for lunch and afternoon tea etc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The AMC (Australian Marine College) sets the costs for the handbook - $39 and the cost of the exam paper and certification, marking - $74 An invigilator has to run the exam. Was there any reason why the MROCP course was selected vs MROVCP. The MROVCP is the "lighter course" focused on VHF which would suit most non commercial boaties? The other is an advanced course for those that already are familiar. Have a look online at what is covered. When I looked at this previously the MROCP covered VHF and HF operation - so the operator was certified for land based base station operation, also commercial work eg tug boat operation etc. I just require recreational fisho VHF use so the lighter the workload the better ( more time for fishing !). Marine Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) A candidate will be required to: Demonstrate a practical knowledge of GMDSS sub-systems and equipment which is appropriate to vessels operating in Australian waters on which a radio installation is not compulsory under international agreements. Specifically, MF/HF and VHF radiotelephony equipment with digital selective calling (DSC) facilities, and emergency position indicating radio beacons of the 406 MHz and 121.5/243 MHz typeDemonstrate an ability to use MF/HF and VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling (DSC) operating procedures, particularly those relating to distress, urgency and safety Demonstrate an understanding of simple maintenance practices required to keep the marine radio equipment specified in (1) in good working order, including the repair of minor faults Demonstrate an understanding of the regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilitiesDemonstrate a basic knowledge of the Australian marine search and rescue system Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have been negotiating with Marine Rescue Port Hacking and they sent me a listing of public courses There is a MROVCP course on 14 Feb 2015 8am to 2pm There is a MROCP course on 21 - 22 Feb 2015 8am to 4pm The courses are held at Cronulla Training Centre 202 Nicholson Parade, South Cronulla To book into these courses contact John 0438 782 722 and make sure you say you are a fishraider. There are only about 30 places so get in asap. Costs will include the licence, exam fee and book and John will advise on cost.
