SPECIAL REQUEST - Pig Rock Kurnell exact location

Hi Raiders

I have received a special request for information from our members. Please see below. If anyone is able to be exact and perhaps post a google map I will be happy to pass it onto this family. As you can appreciate it is very important to them.

I am trying to find out as accurately as possible where the above fishing spot is (Pig Rock at Kurnell). It doesn’t appear on any maps I have looked at. I have also spoken with the NPWS at Kurnell and they have no knowledge of it either. My Father-in-law used to fish there regularly. Unfortunately he is no longer with us and we now wish to scatter his ashes at this spot – if we can locate it.

It would be appreciated by his family if you could help us to find this spot.

I have fished Pig Rock many times years ago. It is between The Terraces and Little Yena and I think it can still be accessed from a small carparking area just South of the parking area on the bend, which is used by most divers these days.

I guess that you should have my email address. If you or a family member wish to contact me, I will be pleased to help. I live at Cronulla these days and can guide them to the exact spot it they wish. Hope this gets through, as I have never tried posting before.

Hi Donna,

All good! I took Russ, the son-in-law out to Pig Rock this afternoon. Luckily it was a 0.16m low when we were there, because the NPWS in their wisdom(?) have closed off the old access tracks to that location, (they call it regeneration!). In doing so, they have created a safety hazard.....

Other Raiders who might be thinking of checking that spot out might be well advised that the only practical access now is via low ledges from the North or possibly the South from the Little Yena area as a very last resort. We came in from the North end, using the new stairs that have been installed in recent years and that is the better way.

BUT!!! As I said, we had a very low tide today and it was careful going in a couple of places for us as we were not wearing cleats etc. (Russ is not a fisho and I had hoped to pick up the old track through the scrub from the road). So, If anyone does feel like fishing there, they should be aware that they could well find themselves cut off when the tide rises, especially if there is a bit of a bump happening. The areas accessed at the bottom of the stairs are worth a try IMO. The area immediately South of the stairs was called The Terraces, as I recall, and was regarded as a reasonable Blackfish spot, but we usually preferred the other spots; Big Yena, Little Yena, The Poss, KB, Althouse and the ledges at Tabbagai. There is a great Blackfish spot just on the North corner from the stairs which is identified by a thick growth of weed there. Obviously enough, it is called Greeny! It can be a bit hairy when there is a Southerly swell washing over the rocks from behind you, because to fish there, you are facing La Perouse. On one occasion I found myself skating on the weed there when water came through from the South East because the weed growth was so thick that my cleats couldn't bite through to the rock enough. Interestingly, the Luderick from Greeny and Little Yena were usually the classic estuary sized fish, while the other locations produced the bigger square mouthed bronzies. They all tasted good though.

I took a couple of photos, but I am still working out how to send them by email (I'm not a tech-head), but when I do manage to find a way to post them here, I will do so.
