New online weather service to benefit mariners

Mariners now have access to a new online service from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), which has designed a series of web pages specifically for those with limited or expensive internet access on the water.

BoM’s MarineLite presents its High Seas and Coastal Waters forecasts and warnings in a simple text-only format. The information loads quickly, and its small download size makes it suitable for satellite internet access and weak land-based mobile internet signals in offshore waters.

Each of the MarineLite pages has been designed to be fewer than four kilobytes in size, which is 95 per cent ‘lighter’ than BoM’s regular web pages.

So, whether you’re cruising in Far North Queensland or you’re a commercial fisherman heading into the Torres Strait, MarineLite offers easy access to BoM’s latest marine forecast and warning information, while complementing its services provided via marine radio (VHF and HF).
