Another Supertrawler - A repeat of 2 years ago

So here we go again......

2 years ago we faced the same issue. The government giving approval without public consultation to allow the operation of factory vessel to fish the baitfish from Southern Australian waters. Once it was well known, it faced fierce opposition and the public managed to turn this vessel around.

Now they are back with a smaller vessel to skirt the laws imposed at the time. Nonetheless with a quota of 16,500 tonnes a year!!!!! Targeting red bait and mackerel - the stable food source for our tuna and billfish. Just imagine if this vessel pulled up at the carpark off port stephens and decimated the bait schools which sustain the marlin fishery.

Meanwhile the average Australian tax payer has to put up with ever increasing restrictions on fishing practices. I would doubt all of the recreational fleet combined would take 10% of what this vessel will take. But lets destroy OUR stocks to send Overseas because they have destroyed their own fishery - just to make a quick buck.

Last government was Labor, this is Liberal. It doesn't matter which party is in government, the only thing that seems to talk to these guys is $$$$$$$ and back room deals.

Spread the word and if we are lucky we may be able to turn this boat around too!

Holy Maccarony. This is scary: "FIONA BREEN: With a quota of 16,500 tonnes, the ship will fish three nautical miles out to sea in waters around southern Australia, from Perth to northern New South Wales."

and "...And it has hundreds of thousands of tonnes of fish in it..." well when i go out fishing, it certainly does not look like that to me. The fish are not exactly jumping in my boat.

This is an absolute joke, Much the same as making St Georges basin, Botany bay, Sydney Harbour and Lake Macquarie all net free and rec only but allowing the Hawkesbury (the largest and by far the most important system in the region) to be absolutely smashed by nets..

You are right in saying the worst thing about this is Australian fish stock is just going to be sent to countries that have hammered their own fishery.

It's about time these pollies recognised once and for all that rec angling brings far more to the community and economy than netting and trawlers ever will but we wont stick around wasting our dollars if systems get fished out.

The concerning thing is this company has specifically sourced a smaller boat within the size restrictions outlined in the governments "guidelines" to remain compliant... what a joke.

Hmmmm that is a nice database of people's names and email addresses.

Who is storing all that information and where will it be passed onto?????? I would never "sign" an online petition. If you really feel that strongly then send an email to the minister or a letter by post

Donna your correct that on the face of it. it looks iffy BUT I believe that this is just sloppy HTML by the site builder nationbuilder

The certificate error is due to the ssl certificate being issued to the site builder not the organisation.

Further the hyper link to the ET website is linking to a https prefix not http.

If you change the https to http you get to the environment tasmanian website.

For a professional organisation this is sloppy and clearly they have not tested what nation builder have created.

Imo this does not look like a dodgy site.

Also the email field is not compulsory on the petition

I do agree sending a letter is a great approach.

Fishmaniac, hopefully they don't come anywhere near port Stephens. I seen the super trawler pass our house the year before and it was huge!

If they had permission to work up here, I'm sure there will be protests of mass proportion.

Hi Raiders,,

I signed and also emailed my member of parliament Scott Morrison.

I received a detailed letter today from Scott Morrison explaining things.

The content of his letter basically meant the government is opposed to super trawlers but is not opposing this trawler/freezer ship because it's under 100meters long.

The "Geelong Star" is 95mtrs long with a holding capacity of 1100 tonnes.

So as far as they are concerned it's going to happen.

The problem is not that this beast will take more fish from the oceans (because the quota is not being increased) but rather it will make strong economical sense for it to take them from as small an area as it can (to save fuel and time).

So local depletions are the real problem, the size of the vessel just allows it to keep fishing (potentially in the same location) while it fills its quota.

Can you imagine the damage to recreational fishing and the economy of Port Stephens if it decided to net The Car Park?

And why wouldn't it? Its obviously going to go wherever the largest aggregations of small pelagic's (bait) are. At times the volumes of slimy mackerel holding there are huge.

The volume of small pelagic's around the Australian coastline is such that this quota is unlikely to have a major impact overall, but the threat of sever local depletion of stocks is very real and a huge problem!

Whale shark investigation

We’re really worried about the impacts of the super trawler on the whale shark because experts say that these animals are vulnerable and should not be lifted out of the water. AFMA still won’t provide details, so we’ve put in requests through Freedom of Information to get the real truth. We’ll keep you posted.

We won’t give up

This was never going to be easy and we aren’t there yet, but we must not give up. The world’s fisheries are suffering - 29% are overfished and 61% are fully exploited* - so these foreign factory vessels need new fishing grounds. We must make sure that the Australian small pelagic fishery doesn’t go down the industrial path that has been so devastating elsewhere.

I've been getting emails from the AMCS asking for money to send a droin out to spy on the trawler after the government stuck a $35,000 price tag on the footage they have of the trawlers (which could have been edited).

Only took a week and I got new emails saying they had raised $15000 which was more than enough to send a drone out there and get some footage...hopefully it sheds some light on the horrendous amount of damage they cause.

That fine is only $40 a truck it would cost more for them to dump it legally, so who's laughing?

The local council fined a new land owner near me $3000 for cutting trees down, his comment, that's only about $10 a tree if I knew that I would have cut down 10 times as many! so who's laughing?

These fines may sound a lot to the run of mill working family but to people with money to burn it's laughable.

So now you know who's laughing!

It's not you and me that's for sure.

Just read that the super trawler geelong star has now left Australian Waters and is no longer flying a Aussie flag so cannot legally fish our waters.

Hooefully it doesn't come back or worse they come back with a bigger trawler.
