Rope around prop

Reggae

Recommended Posts

Hi Raiders, Was out in the boat today and a bit of rope got caught around the prop causing my engine to stall. I removed it and drove it back to the boat ramp and it seemed ok, but still worried that I might have done some damage due to it suddenly stalling. If it started ok should I not worry about getting it checked out. Not sure how tolerant outboards are to rope being stuck and their props. It's a 25 Yamaha.

Interesting question and my two bobs worth, if you experienced no unusual vibration ( due to damaged / deformed prop blades) and you can see no obvious problems, I would not be two worried. Could be a bit dependent on the revs you were doing at the time, but its unlikely to have done much damage (similar to stalling a car)

Cheers

If you have insurance on the boat, ring your insurance company and report the incident, you don't have to do a claim, just report it.

I picked up a rope a couple of years ago, across both legs on my twin duo props.

Stalled both motors.

I tested it running back to Port Hacking from Botany Bay the next day, starting slow and running through the ranges, finishing with around a 28Kn run across Bate Bay.

No vibration, all good.

About a month or so later, started taking a while to get up,on the plane, and using far less fuel on the Port side to the Starboard. Pulled it up on the slip a month later for anti foul.

One prop had spat the inner rubber coupling out.

I rang the insurance company back, they noted the incident, informed me my excess was a $1k, and to keep checking if we found anything further, stop and call them so they could organise to inspect.

I was lucky it was only one prop ($1400, didnt claim) no further damage.
