A UK fishing session with a legend

The legend in question was Dr Dietrich Burkel who is sadly no longer with us. He was the first angler to target and catch a shark in Scottish waters back in 1970 - it was a porbeagle weighing in at 173lb. <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/public/style_emoticons/default/sun.gif"title=":sun:" />

Dietrich was a very clever man and a great fish illustrator. He was most famous for being illustrator in this book - of which he gave me a signed copy.

Anyway back in 2011 he was having a holiday in Drummore,Mull of Galloway and had booked a local charter boat for the full week. "Onyermarks" charters skippered by that old sea dog Ian Burrett. He then kindly invited me out for a days fishing with him which I gratefully accepted. <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/public/style_emoticons/default/sun.gif"title=":sun:" />

We launched at East Tarbet and spent the first half hour fishing for mackerel which were to be our tope baits. Ian then took us further out into Luce Bay and prepared the rubby-dubby ( burley <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/public/style_emoticons/default/sun.gif"title=":sun:" /> ) of mashed up mackerel in an onion sack which was then attached to the anchor rope.

The tope were not co-operating with no runs at all. The banter was good though with plenty of fishing stories told. Dietrich had also brought along the rod that he caught that first Scottish shark on. He fished a shark bait just under the surface all day but had no offers.

Eventually I did get a tope run and managed to hook up. A very spirited fight,a quick photo and back it went with a tag in it for good measure.

Just as we were about to call it a day Dietrich also managed to hook into a tope - I do love a happy ending.

Here is Dietrich on our caravan veranda with that famous rod (the butt section anyway) <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/public/style_emoticons/default/sun.gif"title=":sun:" />

Dietrichs ashes were scattered just off the tip of the Mull of Galloway where he caught that first shark. Sometime in the future we will be meeting up again as my ashes are destined for there as well <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/public/style_emoticons/default/sun.gif"title=":sun:" />
