Hi Guys,

Going to Hong Kong soon and noticed i can buy cheap fishing tackle there.

Has anyone got any feedback regarding this and also how much stuff can you bring into OZ before Mr Customs is not happy.

I hate it when i get pinged at the airport.

Any brands form China any good and can be recommended not to fail when onto a kingie.

Yeah mate thats the plan for us too.

Eat, shop, eat, shop then have too many drinks.

Its time my kids saw a bit of the world.

Looking on the net it appears you can buy tackle.

Reels might be questionable but hooks, mono and braid might be the go.

I will still get a couple of reels anyway - why not - just for fun.

Go to www.customs.gov.au
and look up importing and duty free limits
If buying rods check with your airline about length of product they will allow in general hold as they keep changing the fine print.
Also be aware that if you end up travelling and do a transit stop they may not allow you to board with more than one piece of luggage and they dislike carbon fibre and metal along with liquids. Pack it all in hold baggage is a better option.

As a hint if you are over your duty free limit you can always post it back to yourself rather than carry it and at least you know it has been sent and some couriers have fixed price 3day 2kg satchels

I am glad i am taking the kids as can load them up with my fishing gear as well and avoid duty.

Looks like some good savings on top end gear.

goto Mong Kok, thats where locals go for heavily discounted stuff

all my computers, electronics, clothes, phones, big boyz toys, car parts and fishing gear of course were bought from there i don't know the street names but i suggest explore all of Mong Kok. I reckon for a first timer, it'll take a day and it'll be worth if you love your shopping. Avoid buying stuff in tourist areas like Tsim Sha Tsui because they'll rip you off. But still take a look though. Suggest you buy a pocket map for $20HKD from the airport. Otherwise Mong Kok looks like a mess

Buy lures! My friend got heaps of quality Japanese squid jigs real cheap. hk is like japan out of japan, so you'll basically see quality japanese gear. don't be surprised to see big game gear too!

I suggest shipping some gear...postal is cheap. i always ship the stuff that check-in won't allow me to carry.

i don't know where you're staying but here's my little tip with excess baggage. HK airport is on Lantau Island, miles away from the main hub. The airport express stops at the following stations Tsing Yi, Kowloon and HK Island (Central). Each of these stops have flight check-in stations (saves you from carrying luggage all the way to the airport). Goto these hours ahead of your flight. Pack as much as you can even if its 35kg per piece (it worked for me once but that was during off peak). Whatever you can't take on, run-off to postal office and send it home.

Its good that way because it saves you money and the rest of the time left in HK you don't have to worry about your main luggage

You might wanna consider getting Japanese fluorocarbon because that too would be cheaper

the biggest chain of fishing stores is called triton fishing co. their biggest store is in wanchai, to be honest it wasnt as great as i expected but i got some cheap flurocarbon, jigging braids, some spinning rods, and some daiwa cy's for 80 bucks aud each, also picked up a set of swans cap glasses

Daiwa is flavour of the month in Asia right now, which means Shimano is the bargain. These little beauties were under $100AUD each:

Lures in general are cheap: Yo-Zuri Hydro Magnums $80HKD ($12AUD), 5x Yo-Zuri squid jigs $50HKD ($7AUD),
Sabikis about $1 each, & these Ubercool Ma Ma (Maria) tiny SP's under $3.50AUD per 12:

I went to quite a few shops, My tip is check out Jordan thoroughly. Triton on Ferry Rd is better than the Wanchai store, and there are some hidden treasures on Battery St in Jordan as well. Very little in the way of heavy tackle, although Saltiga 4500's and 6500's are popular and cheap. About $725AUD for 6500 and $580AUD for 4500. Certate 2500 is about $420AUD. Cheaper than Japan by a long shot. TLD30 2sp is the biggest reel I saw anywhere and was $400AUD.

If you want one of these reels call the shop before you leave Australia so they can order them in. They usually only keep one of each in stock. When I got to Triton, Holly (Hong Kong's fanatical GT queen) was busily spooling up a Saltiga just sold, so I missed out :-\ Her best GT was 109cm pulled from an oil rig Go Grrrl

The only locals who buy this gear go on long-range charters organized by the stores to oil rigs in the South China Sea, targeting GT's and Amberjack. The good 'ol garden variety bream is the most abundant (tho still rare) and popular target in HK, and the tackle shops reflect this with their abundance of ultra-finesse gear.

Customs in HK will charge $90HKD per pound for anything over 15kg checked baggage. Pffft who cares! it's only 12 bucks. If you want to drink too much that's easy, find a bar in Tsimshatsui called Ca$h. for $260HKD per head they have an all-you-can-drink Buffet...I would give a recommendation if I could remember anything And a definite must-do is a day trip to Macao (no visa req'd) check out the Grand Lisboa casino and the Hotel lobby on the other side; it's just trippin... The Venetian is astounding also. Makes Vegas look like Dapto Caravan Park.

i'm still in hk and still buying gear

i just bought myself a tiagra 30a for $460aud, not that i know what to do with it hehe they just had to get rid of them coz no one buys them so i helped out.

bought 2 saltiga rods too, approx $670aud for both. now i'm screwed coz dunno how to bring them back.

bought a 2500R luvias. was tempted to buy a daiwa dogfight. they go for abt $750aud

i noticed williamson jigs are cheaper than ones in aussieland. are they made in china?

Most Jigs I saw in all the shops are made in China; this includes the Jap brands like Smith, Daiwa, Shout!, Valley Hill, Yambal, Miyu Seiko etc. A few were assembled in China/Philo/Thailand from Jap components (Duel/Daiwa). Where did you find the Tiagra?? I couldn't find heavy gear anywhere other than a TLD30 and Saltigas etc. I brought rods back as checked oversize luggage inside 80mm PVC plumbing tube from one of those little ghetto hardware stores, lol! No probs whatsoever.

i bought the tiagra at 47 parkes st jordan. he's kinda like a shimano dealer so he gives big discounts.

i have his email address if you want. he used to be a mech. engineer so he knows reels very well and english is not a problem. ships OS but he's figuring best way to accept OS money. i might try to convince him to use paypal so i can pay via credit card without the hefty conversion fees.

Thanks Bro, I didn't have time to pound all the pavement in Jordan, but there are some great little shops tucked away in those back streets for sure. If you find the bait shop on Battery st near Jordan rd he has some really cheap jap lures/squid jigs in a glass cabinet collecting dust & will flog them cheap as... Largest size Hydro Magnums $80HKD each,(none left, I cleaned him out!) Hydro Tiger poppers $60HKD each, pack of 5 Yo-Zuri Arrow squid jigs $50HKD Prices are definitely dictated by demand. Seems the smaller/lighter tackle is the more they charge; the bigger & heavier, cheaper it becomes. Heavenly
