  1. G'day Everyone first chat , So my dad and myself are hiring a boat for three hours at Akuna bay in Cowan creek some time over the next few weeks, I've read that there are good catches of leatherjacket coming out of there but not sure. Anyway just wondering if anyone had any tips on spots, what fish we might catch, what tackle to use or what bait, lures etc.we should be using. We are planning to fish with prawns, squid, live nippers and live yakkas around cottage point and . But any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Schembo1
  2. This is why I love fishing

I've been plotting around the various bays in Cowan Creek over the past few weekends willing the surface action from the bream whiting to kick off. After finally picking up my first bream off the surface for 2014/2015 I think it is finally starting to heat up. Also dropped a horse of a whiting after it spat the hook from my surface walker. Anyway, last weekend I turn up to the flats and put a few eager casts out in anticipation of action which were pretty woeful to say the least when all of the sudden a school of decent sized estuary tailor turn up absolutely tearing apart baitfish which had taken shelter in the bay. The kind that when they are done there are sprinkles of bait fish causalities throughout the water column. Only lasting 5 minutes it was a fish a cast and on light gear and was so much fun. I managed to get a couple of videos one where you can see the baitfish jumping out of the water as they are pushed up hard against the boat. It's the little unexpected things that happen when you are fishing that make me keep going back time and time again. Cheers Matt
  3. Hawkesbury after recent rain

Hi Ive been surprised how fishless the Hawkesbury has been (at least for me) recently. I thought the rain might have stirred things up a bit. Ive tried the deepwater close to shore around the entrance to smiths creek in both daytime and night time sessions with very poor results. As discoloured water sits on the top of the water column I thought there might be some action below in these deepish waters - not to be. Having failed in the tinnie I then tried land based around flint and steel to see if closer to the entrance might be firing. Flicked half pilli's around for hours. Couldn't even attract pickers. Anybody got any comments, or similar/different experiences over recent days? cheers
  4. Raiders, Went for a flick last weekend in Cowan Creek. I had never fished these areas before and it was more of a fact finding trip as i had heard it is a great spot to fish. The water is cool now and the fishing wasn't great but i will definitely be back for more. We dropped the boat in at Apple Tree Bay and just went from bay to bay checking them out. The water is crystal clear and gets very shallow up the end of each bay. The bottom has nice patches of weed and nipper holes all over the place so i dare say it will be a top spot in summer for whiting. We ended up in Smiths creek which has some much deeper water and we managed 1 Amberjack and 1 flathead both caught on a Gulp grub with a1/8th Jighead on 4lb line . The footage is not as exciting as other trips out but worth a look just to check out how nice a place this is to fish. An average day fish wise but its great when we find areas that are also a pleasure to fish. Cheers, Dean
  5. Hairtail?

Hi all, Thinking of taking the annual trip up to Cowan creek to chase some toothy hairtail in the next few weeks, and was wondering if anyone has been up there yet this year and had any luck??? Not sure if they're there yet with the water being as warm as as it is at the moment. Any info would be great. Thanks
