  1. Attaching a SP or HB

One of my favourite fish to catch is the bream. My boat is even named “ dream for bream”. ive never been into lure fishing, but can’t resist trying it out after watching hours of videos online of big bream being caught in the harbour. I would like some advice on attaching a lure. Knots and leader strengths. Even rod and reel recommmendations. From the main line (braid) what happens next? Any lure suggestions? I have been bait fishing my whole life sadly and I’m really keen to try this out. Thanks in advance
  2. So the misus recons I have been neglecting her of late.... And she may have a point as we have been having plenty of boys boat trips since I bought Baysic. Why don't we go for a nice picnic I say..... Let's take the boat have a little fish and beach it at towra point for lunch and a swim.... So off we go... Start out at the runway see some surface activity.... Which is gone by the time I tie a metal on.... We head off instead to the oil wharf try the east side for a bit with little success then realising the tide is running out we head to the west and Berley up with pilchard cubes.... We start to get a few small snapper then I hand her my new finese set up bushy legand sp rod with a small sinker and bait on it. She is sitting on the back of the boat when the rod goes off and she hooks up and lands her first decent fish a legal trevally, over the next few hours we get a fair bit of action landing 4 with her with the hat trick... Next up we beach the boat..... I leave two anchors out as its a run out tide still and enjoy a bit of beach and food.... Waiting for our crab trap to fill.... No luck today. We drift away from towra and I finally tie a soft plastic on my brand new rod flick it out and first cast I am on.... Can't believe it as I have only caught 1 fish on a plastic before.... It's another trav. We end up at the runway again and the sounder looks good but not much action ..... I have pretty much finished for the day but muster up the effort to flick out the sp this time with a diesel gulp paddle tail. A few casts later the rod goes off hard.... Surely not a king I think to my self.... Before we see the fish start to jump like a small Marlin..... A fight ensues with the fish alternating between sounding for the bottom and reaching for the sky.... We land it safely measure it up and it's a 60 plus cm Australian salmon my first and probably my largest fish..... What really tickled me was that I had kinda given up fishing and decided to push on for those last few casts and it was on plastics which I am really inexperienced in..... Good day out for sure took a while to take smile off my face
  3. What Am I Doing Wrong?

Hi Raiders, Im looking for some advice. So a few months ago ive started to get into the artificial section of fishing, so SP's and HB's, and my main reason is for it is so i can pick up my rod and go whenever i had free time (i do love using bait, but the bait shot is annoying out of the way trip). I usually hit somewhere alot botany from endeavour bridge all the way down towards captain cooks ( i never go beyond that), with my main spots being captain cooks, endeavour bridge and dolls point. When i first started with SP's i went for flathead alot, and more or less most of the time i would come home with 2 or 3 decent sized one. Great fun to catch and when i still get them now, it excites me! However I'm now looking at trying to get some bream, and I invested in some HB's and some creature SP's however for about 2 months now, to no avail, I have pretty much gotten ZILCH! I do aim for structure like your rockwalls, pontoons and channel markers, and mostly i use a 8ft diving HB minnow (different colors) to try and hit this elusive bream. Ive tried different jigging techniques with SP's from slow retrieve, fast retrieve, the combination, hop-hops etc and nothing. I do know what the pull and feeling of a bream is like and its great fun (usually if I go up to Narrabeen, with pretty much prawns or yabbies, you would be pulling them back in, usually avg. 20cm, undersized but good pulls and very fun). My question really is, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Ive watched enough youtube videos and read enough reports, and im still not getting it. Could any raiders please give me tips, especially if you live in the area! Just note, i dont have a boat or a yak, it would make fishing structures easier but im limited to landbased approaches. Gotta walk before you run right! Happy Fishing Raiders, KTAN3235
  4. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/100x-2-Soft-Plastic-Fishing-Lures-Single-Curl-Tail-Grub-Worms-Hook-Bait-BREAM-/201292380841?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item2eddf5faa9 I was just wondering are these grubs good for fishing, I fish in river mostly. such as hawkesbury, Narrabeen lake. Is this good with 7g size 2 hook jig heads??. Thanks.
  5. Well. Don't quite know where to start Raiders. This was going to be a report about my fishless adventures of the last few weeks, only bringing in a couple of flatties while spending many an hour throwing plastics around till you're double ripping in your sleep hoping for the illusive Ghost. BUT I GOT ONE!!!! It was GOING to be a post about teleportation and trying to help me understand how one minute i'm at home frantically studying for my last uni exams and then BAM. Somehow I'm standing on the river bank rod in hand....(one of those mysteries that will go down in history unsolved) but now I can contribute to the Jewie knowledge base! Somewhat... After another brain snap from too much study i headed down to my old faithful local haunt at Rozelle bay. It was dark and the tide had just started the runout so I began throwing SPs and blades around on my light outfit, but got fed up with the dark braid not showing up and not being able to feel the light weights hit the bottom. So i trudged back to the car and pulled out my trusty 2500 sienna/3-5kg stick combo. 10lb braid 12lb leader that i've been using targeting these illusive buggers. Was hoping for flatties as there's a neat little sand bank that holds a few. First cast, bang flatty on, on a big squidgy fish in silver fox. He mashed that lure, so i stuck on my closest imitation, a Zman 4" paddle tail in a grey/mullet/slightly sparkly colour. Second cast, bang flatty. Kept flicking for a while with no more interest Then the fun started: Saw a baitfish bust up just down the rock wall and chucked my plastic, it was either on the drop or on the drop after the first double rip that I came up tight, typical little TICK in the line that a flatty gives when they wolf it down. Thinking I had a nice flatty by the weight I started reeling in keeping the tension up. Then it started pulling back! And boy did it want to head for New Zealand. Drag was screaming and luckily I had just regreased it so it was nice and smooth. It had me running down the rockwall in the dark, there isn't any structure around really that it could brick me on so I kept cool and didn't tighten up the drag just played it out, eventually (and it felt like an eternity and a split second) I had regained most of the line it had run off with. Never actually occurred to me that I had a Jewie on! Was thinking a red or some pelagic like a salmon or something. Then I saw Silver! Frantically jumped (read pretty much fell) down the rock wall to try and get my grips in (didn't bring the net. What an idiot) and comfort lifted her up the rock wall! SUCCESS!! By this stage a had about 6 people watching me and one of them kindly took a photo for me! No measurement but don't think it would be far off legal. She was a solid fish! Scrambled back down the rock wall to start reviving her to release, one lady of my audience remained and gave me grief that 'its already dead you've killed it, it would be flapping around otherwise' and I had to explain as I swam the fish that it was tired and just needed some water. SUCCESSFULLY swam the fish thankyou very much. It was in good shape too, kicking from the first few flushes of the gills and paddled happily off to the depths. Great to see her swim off after giving me such a good run! Still got that grin on my face! And I can now say I know what people mean by the distinctive smell! Still on my hands and clothes...kinda like it, Smells like Victory. Also a HUGE thanks to all the raiders who share their knowledge, and those who have given me the 'stick at it' encouragement. Happy to answer any questions, hopefully this will be the first of many now to figure out all the conditions and timing and what I did right! CHEERS! Witha Few more pics of flatties etc
  6. Hello Raiders! Finally back to sydney after a long 6 weeks up in grafton on prac!....foolishly didn't bring any fishing gear up with me so haven't been able to wet a line! Lucked out with my 2nd placement block so im in sydney and near my fishing haunts! We hit one of our local spots....unfortunately i can't say where or i'd be lynched by the boys who showed me the spot.... just went for a quick sp's flick, both of us using our light spin gear hoping for a few flatties/bream. running 6 lb braid to 10lb fluro, 1/6-1/8 oz jigs to 4-5 inch power baits high tide was at 6pm, getting dark around 5. we hit the stretch that is known to hold a few flatties.....flats dropping off to a few deeper holes arrived at 3pm tides running in and we were quickly into a few fish 1st cast after a few twitches a small bump then im on to a junior flatty, mate calls out that hes on as well pulls up a decent flatty... after an hour ended up with 2 keepers and 4 undersized. the lighter contrast colors doing the damage. 4:15 and school zones ended we decide to get rdy to pack up, last few flicks! on the 3rd lift after casting into one of the big holes my rod goes off for a blistering run, reel screaming ZzzzzzzZ, was fishing 1-2kg of drag and with newly spooled line i knew i had a decent amount of play so just let it run, 1/2 way through the spool and its slowing down starting to feel head shakes, fish turns and starts swimming back towards me and im left furiously taking up line, im screaming out JEWWIEEE to my mate and he quickly comes over to watch the action, fish goes off for another solid run, this time its swimming around the point and im left trying to steer it back to where i want it to go..... almost to the end of the spool now....i start putting on more pressure, feathering the spool then disaster.....line goes slack F#@$!!!!! ......... winding in the line still feeling weight ......fish must have spat the hook I get the jig in and the hook has straightened F@#$% dodgy nitro jigs !!!! mean time my mate has renewed his interest and has got his plastic back out again, aiming for the big hole i head back to our gear and am re rigging and i hear him shout IM ON!!! JEWIE bastard.... initial fight goes pretty much the same, jew must have followed the plastic out of the hole and picked it up just before the flats then ripped off to the right, this time it pretty much goes perfectly to plan, swims out to the right where there no snags and lots of room to play the fish and stays out to the right. fish goes for 3-4 big runs, my mate had his drag set abit harder and the fish is playing by the book 15 mins later he beaches a nice 90+ cm jew bastard indeed oh well thats fishing, we must have flicked through a school of jews! tried for another 30min then called it a day as it was getting dark great session for ~2 hrs of fishing and my 1st in 6 weeks! Brilliant bycatch especially on light gear !
