A young woman has been found dead and major search operation is underway for two men missing from a Central Coast beach.

A member of the public raised the alarm after finding fishing equipment and other personal items abandoned on a rock shelf at Moonee Beach..., within the Munmorah State Conservation Area, about 6.30am today (Sunday 17 June 2012).

Police from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command attended the scene and commenced inquiries.

Just before 9.30am, the body of an 18-year-old Edgeworth woman was found washed up on nearby Ghosties Beach.

Inquiries have revealed the teenager travelled to the area with two male friends, aged 18 and 20, possibly to go fishing and surfing.

A major search operation – involving Tuggerah Lakes and Lake Macquarie Local Area Commands, Marine Area Command, the Rescue Squad and Polair – is now underway for the two men.

Police have located a car belonging to the young woman’s family at Catherine Bay Hill, while clothing belonging to all three teenagers was discovered on the beach.

Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are ongoing.

A post mortem examination will be conducted in coming days.

Anyone with information that might assist investigating officers is urged to contact Wyong Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
