Fishers are being reminded not to eat Spanish mackerel that weigh more than 10kgs (as determined by NSW industry experts) following two recent reports of ciguatera poisoning after people ate large Spanish mackerel caught off the NSW mid north coast. Ciguatera poisoning is caused by eating warm water finfish which carry the ciguatera toxin. More information can be found at http://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/…/2016-04-11-ciguatera-…

I was at Coffs Harbour over easter and when cleaning the catch i noted one fisho with a rather large spanish mack estimated at 15 kilos , i told him about the cigaretera problem but they didnt seem too concerned , perhaps the fisheries should be putting warning signs up at all north coast fish cleaning tables.
