Cotter campground act

7 posts in this topic

Hey all,

Looking at doing some camping at the cotter over the Christmas break. Has anyone done any fishing in or around the cotter camp ground?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)!

It does hold carp, near the junction with the bidgee you can get Murray cod and yellas as well as carp. Higher up the cotter you will get trout particularly if they are releasing water from the dams

The Cotter actually has a pretty good population of Trout, but you have to be prepared to get away from the campground and easy access stuff.

They are mostly smallish to mid-size Rainbows.

Shame that Cotter Dam and Bendora Dam are no fishing lakes, they hold some lovely Trout.

Brendan 138, as Matt said there is a population of smallish rainbows, but be aware the Cotter River and a lot of the creeks around that area (paddys river etc) are declared trout streams which means that you can only use artificial lures and flies .....no live bait! Plus you are only allowed one attended rod. Once you get to the junction where the Cotter meets the Murrumbidgee, bait fishing is fine.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the replies guys. I only ever use lures in the ACT anyway so I'll throw a few small trout lures in the tackle bag.

Murrumbidgee, Cotter, Paddys, Gudgenby etc are all easy to get, of course as long as you have transport. Just head out to the Cotter, you will pass the Murrumbidgee on the way, then the cotter river runs from the wall of the Dam to the junction of the Murrumbidgee. The other rivers and streams can be accessed by continuing up the Paddys river Road from the Cotter Dam. Be aware that the Trout Streams close from today until October, so its illegal to fish them. Murrumbidgee is ok as its not a trout stream.
