    Chasing snapper

Planned with a mate to go for an early morning snapper session. So after work, I packed my gear, and had a couple of hours of sleep before he picked my up at 4am. We launched from Parsley bay ramp at Brooklyn and we were ready to go by 5.30. Anchored at west reef with the first light after a 30 minutes bumpy ride. Started our burley trail and had some snapper snatchers sitting at the bottom as well as some floating bait and were ready for the bites. All what we managed to get was some wrasse and reef fish off the bottom and some livies on the sabiki, so we moved to try a different spot however it wasn’t any better. After an hour or so, we decided to move closer to the headland in a try to find a calmer spot as our first 2 stops were uncomfortable in the small boat due to the 2m swell and the chop. We moved to another spot and anchored for 30 minutes with no signs for the reds. However, the bait rig was being smashed by big slimies and yellow tail so we stocked some livies enough for the morning and moved to our next spot. Losing hope on catching reds and having some live bait, we decided to troll for some time before anchoring at our last stop for the morning. Anchored again around Berrenjoey, in calmer water, and we had our bait in the water. Slow start with no bites until one of the floating pilchard rigs went off. A nice size salmon was our first keeper with more followers. We managed to net 5 more salmon before the school disappeared from the sounder. Landed and released a couple of undersize snapper and a couple of port Jackson sharks. Lost a couple salmon and a monster lizard at the side of the boat while grabbing the net. Then we called it a day and we were back to the ramp by 12.30pm. Although we had no luck with our target species and the weather was not ideal offshore, it was a good session overall that we enjoyed. At dinner time, I enjoyed a tasty fresh salmon along with some fresh shark steak that was caught on Friday’s night. Apologies for not including a lot of photos in my post and for my limited story telling skills. Tight lines all, Ahmed

    Crabing

Hi, Tuggerah lakes is good for crabbing both muddies and blue swimmers. The conventional wisdom is any month with an r in the name. Like @noelm said above, check the rules to be sure that you are not going to get busted by fisheries. One feller I met just used a long handled net to catch crabs walking the jetties at Long Jetty. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who steal traps and or raid them so you need to keep close by when they are set to keep an eye on them. I've only used witches hats. We would find a mark and then allow the wind to drift the boat on a straight line and place the traps at regular intervals making them easy to relocate. We used mullet frames for bait which seemed the best though one guy I know, who gets more than plenty, swears by tins of cat food. Fun to get and great to eat. Good luck, KB

    Braid - Looking for specific

Interesting point about the tension. I notice that I tend to get more tangles in my braid when it seems to be looser on the spool. After getting a hell of a tangle on Friday, I respooled a reel today with fresh 20lb braid and struggled to get it on tight enough, even using a spool tensioner. Any tips on how to get it on TIGHT?!

Bottom Bashing Off Sydney - What works for me

There's no rules when bottom bashing ! If your catching fish and your happy, no need to change. But if your struggling and want to try something new then by all means change it up. Give the hybrid a go too.

CAR PARKING NEAR CLIFTON GARDENS RESERVE

I'm pretty sure there are no fees. I normally can find parking in the area circled below, it is free and unlimited. Access might be limited to cars in the very early morning, but I don't think there's anything stopping you from walking in

Long weekend Lake Mac, PB bycatch

Thanks for your comments guys. When we moved out here from the UK, I’m sure one of the visa demands were socks and thongs, especially for Newy! Plus I can’t wear Ugg boots because my six toes won’t fit😉

    Landbased Yarra Bay ripper

I'm thinking primarily a setup that will allow me to switch between targeting luderick one day, to bream/ drummer/ whiting/ flatties the next without having to re-spool every time. I might just have to get an Alvey 60 reel to spool a bit heavier and use it with that same rod if chasing tailor and the like.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated. The distance bw my droppers is about half what you use. Will try a longer length as suggested, thanks.

    Eucumbene River Flats

Made my way down to Adaminaby a week before the season closure, arriving just after 26mm of rain. Heavy snow the night before left the Eucumbene River flats covered. With the river up and portal pumping everything looked good for some spawn run action. Picked up 9 fish in total on Rapala Xraps up to about 50cm, all released. Pretty slow for the others on the river by all accounts but hard to be too dissapointed given the epic scenery. The low lake levels for past couple of years have led to miles of extra river, with now well established banks, providing plenty of space for anglers to spread out which is great. Tried again the following morning but zilch - seems like you need to be there the day after heavy rain, the day after that is too late...
  21. Are there car parking fees for parking in Morella Road near the reserve? Is access to the reserve limited very early morning?

How best to fill these holes?

Yep, depending on how much you need, a surfboard place, or a boat repair place will sell you some, and probably have pigment, you can buy repair kits from boat shops, but it's an expensive way to buy it.

    Landbased Yarra Bay ripper

I would try 12 pound mono if you are looking at what you have already caught. Buy a quality brand - some are made thinner than others for the same breaking strain. 12 pound will enable you to chuck out pillies without a sinker, and be strong enough handle most fish. A kingie or bigger jew will give you a workout. Lighter line if you are targeting bream, whiting, flatties.

Hi, Go see a Surf board builder. He will tell you how to do it. It isn't hard. Cheers.

39 knots is not fast enough? don't be confused in thinking the HO is actually more HP, because it's not, it is just "mapped" differently to change the torque curve.
