The flatty will get its usual beer battering - can’t go wrong with a crispy batter 😋 The kingies usually get eaten raw (sashimi with soy/ginger/wasabi or ceviche) sometimes I’ll pan fry a fillet with some olive oil, sprinkle of garlic salt, parsley flakes, pepper. But might try something different tonight with the kingy. Was a tough day Dave, with long periods between bites & a fair bit of travel. Those toads did me in - no matter how fast I was reeling. Lucky the kings were on. Thanks Rob! Always good to check your lines when reef fishing. I hooked a fish earlier in the day that went to reef - bit of scraping, gave some slack line and it came out. Must of scuffed my line.

Not good at all, had live poddies and not flathead in 3 days of fishing. Almost like it was winter, this time last year we were pulling in models over 70cm consistently.

If you just want to catch anything at all, then wharves are pretty good for yakka at night. I see them all the time especially if you burley up. When I got bored I would tear the bread super small and toss it at my feet and literally see dozens suddenly show up.

I use a slider rig with a 30cm sinker trace (teardrop sinker) sliding to a 60-80cm 20lb trace and a wide gap or circle hook. It keeps the bait just off the bottom if I’m trolling through weed.

A diary is a great tool. You may not ever read what you wrote but, the writing focuses your thoughts, helping you analyse how well your plan went on the day.

Some interesting observations there. So far I haven’t had too much luck night fishing anywhere. At dusk everything goes crazy but as soon is the dark comes it becomes a bit quiet but obviously there’s many people who night fish with excellent results so I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong. @Mike Sydney do you use bait or lures? Are lures still as effective at night? Do you fish at dusk or when it gets fully dark

Mostly I fish office hours. There are a lot of fish to be caught during the day. I doubt any fish bite more in the middle of the day. Change of light just seems to fire them up. My best ever session on Luderick was during a solar eclipse. They were biting OK beforehand but from when the light started fading until the eclipse passed, they were on the weed before the lead settled the float in the water.

I fish there heaps at night it’s great to be honest. Lots of bream and flathead near the wharf and tailor under the bridge itself. @linewetter that’s the wharf by the car park last night

Hi all, was wanting to try hairtail fishing around Akuna Bay is there any issues with the ramp there? I have a small 4m tinny and I’ll be launching solo, would like to try there close to the marina as I understand at night its very dark and fog can be an issue.

A couple of “almosts” with some big splashes at the lure but it wasn’t to be. still, all lures retained and (not counting me) only one crazy person encounter. (An old lady basically body checked @linewetter walking right at him, basically tightroping the ledge in a strange game of chicken). A wild and woolly night but let’s do it again soon.

Very good info! Especially about leaving the bail arm early on the Texas rig. That is something I hadn't thought about as a workaround to let the sinker sink first without it sliding straight to the hook. Going to try practicing rigging weedless (biggest weakpoint at this point) then trying out both the Texas rig and Carolina rig. The drop shot rig though I'm imagining using maybe off a wharf or somewhere that it can be put down vertically - that'll be my first place I was planning on testing that one out. It looks like the Carolina rig will be the go to for me for a better unweighted presentation but the Texas rig for more snag proofing. Thanks again for sharing 😁 Will also try the hook sizes you mentioned for the 2.5" plastics since I already have those in possession as well

Hi mate over the last 15 years I have caught roughly 20 odd rainbow trout ranging from 25cm upto 50cm all have been caught east of turon gates . I used to chase gold in the river system and have observed alot of fish holding in the river even when the flow is minimal majority of the larger pools have normally seen a healthy population I have caught some on selter lures in red and green the smaller size and I also used 3 split shots above a fly so I was able to cast and retrieve back towards myself and then on some half hearted attempts the simple worm with tiny pea sinker has given me success. I'm very surprised that there isn't much online information about the presence of trout in that area as I know of atleast 2 fishing shacks that have been there since the 1960 and have stayed in them over a period of time and both have alot of really good fish and numbers with the evidence of the numerous pictures on the walls of the cabins also the agreement of both cabins or huts whatever you want to call them are privately owned via a group of different families that stay there on and off during the seasons. I have heard of large numbers of carp however I honestly can't remember ever seeing any from the shore line or when I have been diving using a dive hookah which allows me to spend several hours at a time underwater nearly all the fish I have seen or caught have been from the underside of carved out inside bends of the river or at the end of fast moving water aswell as plenty of platypus. I used to dive there in a dry suit and if I left it wet or my towel outside of my swag it would freeze stiff as a board I think the population is only just sustainable over summer as the water temperature stays that tiny bit cool enough as there is several feeder springs and trickles from very shaded feeder not quite creeks but trickles of cool mountain fresh water. If I was to ever visit the region again I would be confident of catching fish if this was my agenda. Hope to hear a successful report back it is an awesome area of country and as far as I know it is the fastest rising river in the southern hemisphere I have experienced a near dry riverbed to a four hour later period of heavy rain and the amount of water moving through from the huge catchment area is mind blowing not to mention the size of the boulders this water way can move the power is insane and you must be mindful of this if you choose to cross the river if you know there is weather moving in be prepared to choose your sides because once it's up your there for along as it takes to drain out at its own time.

I started night fishing recently with the hour change and it being dark much earlier now. I find it hit or miss so far. Even going to the same spots at the same times, sometimes I can catch a good amount of fish or get a lot of interest and then other nights it's just nothing at all. When it used to get darker later though, I did notice that the bite would die down for me as soon as it got dark compared to when there was still light out - this was a consistent observation as I would be fishing the same wharf, using the same bait (bread), casting in the same area day after day for weeks. When the sun was setting, I would still get good interest and decent sized fish, but when it turned dark, it went dead or the interest would be infrequent in comparison. But with lures, I feel like I have more times where I've had interest at night funnily enough in comparison to bait.

What a killer sunrise! Some nice fish caught as well. How do you plan to cook up the flathead and kingy?
