  2. ... the fuel is an investment .... that's what I keep telling myself 🙄
  3. Thanks Dave it was worth waiting out and good to catch fish ina new spot👌 Get out there Zoran! The water is still warm and you might save on fuel not having to head offshore! Thanks Isaac I didn’t have a rain jacket with me and the Bimini didn’t do a lot to keep me dry as the South easter blew the rain sideways! I saw a couple of boats around Lilli Pilli. One guy in a Stabicraft got a feed of bream on the flats there all caught on cheesy chicken!
  4. Yeah I had a suspicion as I have seen videos of what Jews do to lives. A big jew has been on the bucket list so disappointing. Was rather a funny spot for it though, middle of the day and not in very deep water,
  5. Yesterday
  6. Sounds like a jewie to me. Their pin-like teeth will do that to a livie just to let you know what you missed😢. Would have been a lot more damage to the livie if it was a tailor and kings don't have teeth to speak of, flattie's are rasping teeth , so yeah pretty sure it was a jew. A good session nevertheless and an interesting report to read, thanks for posting.
  7. Other than the dawia sensor, can you please recommend any other brand or rod? I've had a couple of bad experiences with dawia and now don't buy from them anymore. Got 2 saltists, within 4 weeks, a few of the guide inserts fell out while just sitting on the shelf, called dawia and they said I can either send them back and wait 6 weeks for them to make up their mind wether it's a warranty or I can go fix it myself, (they wanted me to pay shipping both ways). Looking to get a heavier rod for baitfishing for Jews, something in the 15kg range. Do you ever target Jews on lure off the beach? What setup would you use?
  8. Been meaning to ask, do you have a smaller tackle box that you pack for traveling? Or do you just take everything? Once I have the fridge, recovery gear, sleeping arrangements, spare parts, fuel, water, ECT, really not much spare left. Have you had any experience with a 3 piece rod? Are they any good?
  9. Brilliant report of a very full day on the water with your friends. How many times does it happen that staying that little bit longer produces the goods. Certainly the case with you and Eagle. Not only did you get some excellent fish but you have gathered a lot of valuable information for future outings. That's what fishing is all about...having fun and learning something new when you get to do it. Well done, bn
  10. I guess as time moves on we all have to accept what gets thrown at us, sorry to hear you’re not doing so well, but, as mentioned, there is help and options. Never be afraid to ask for assistance, both professionally and through “friends” here, next time I am up your way (which is not that often) I will call in, but if there’s anything we can do, just ask.
  11. You are welcome. Hope the weather co-operates.
  12. Headed out to the harbour today with @44jeff, @eaglesilk5 and 2 other friends from school. We headed out to a place near circular quay, where we had landed a few good luds on the last session. Jeff arrived about an hour earlier than the rest of us, and he managed 1 fish in the fist few minutes before it went dead. When we arrived around 9:30, we burleyed up and began trying other parts of the wharf in case the fish weren't in Jeffs particular area. After about half an hour, I had a down and I managed to land a small luderick, around 30cm. As I was unhooking my fish, Eagle managed to hook another and we landed 2 fish in quick succession, both around the same size. After trying the same areas for another half hour for no results, i decided to move to the area off the small beach, where i had seen some fish earlier. The sun was quite high in the sky now, and my skin was feeling quite hot. As I put my rod down to put on some sunscreen, I see my float shoot under, and i'm on! After a good fight, I landed the biggest fish of the day, going 38cm. This would've been a good fish to catch in the upcoming pirtek fishing comp! After grabbing some lunch, we headed over to the same wharf where we had tangled with some kings last week. When we arrived, the rain started pouring down, so heavy that you could barely see the other side of the river. It was absolute mayhem for a couple of minutes, but as quickly as the rain came, it disappeared, and the sun came out and it turned into a total glass off. Classic australian weather 😂. The water was substantially browner now, and it was hard to catch yakkas. When we eventually managed to find a few, there were no kings following them up, which was strange as we had kings harass almost every fish we brought up last time. We gave up on this plan, so instead we decided to chuck out yakka fillets into the channel. This resulted in 3 nice bream, around 30cm, and the usual small pinky snapper. As we caught a few more smaller sized yakkas, i decided to chuck out a livie out far on my 30lb rod, trying for a larger fish. After an hour or so of the livie sitting out without any action, i decided to check it, and the yakka had been completely destroyed. I reckon it was a crab, but if anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. With the yakkas slowing down and the day coming to an end, Jeff and the others dedcided to head home, so it was just Eagle and I still fishing. We decided to try another spot close to the wharf, leaving our livies and cut bait still out. After catching a few big yakkas, we had run out of bait, so i headed back to our main spot to grab some. As i left with a few more chunks of chicken, I see eagle's livie rod bend over and start screaming. I run over, but i'm not fast enough, as the fish has already spat the hook. I head back over to the spot, and tell Eagle what has happened. After fishing for about 15 minutes, eagle goes back to begin packing up, as it is getting dark. As he reaches the wharf, I hear him yell out my name, and as i rush back, i see my rod is bent. The fish felt like a heavy weight, so i called it for a large flathead. However as it surfaces, i see a flash of silver. Its a jew! The adrenaline is really pumping now, and with the ferry moving in, i need to land it quick. I bend down, and try to grab the fish, but instead i get a faceful of salt water. After multiple attempts, I manage to get my hand around the fish and i fling him up onto the wharf. The onlookers congratulate me, and i cant remember the last time i felt so happy with catching a fish. Eagle manages a nice bream too while this is happening, again around the 30cm mark. 65cm jewy, crushes my previous biggest! also my first ever fish on a live yakka. Since it was really starting to get dark, we pack in in for the day, but eagle's rod goes off in the last few moments. A 27cm bream to end off a cracker day, cant complain with that. Ended with 4 landed luderick, 5 nice bream, and the nice jewie.
  13. Hey guys, After a long stint of kayak fishing I have recently started chasing the almighty jewfish. I live around Avoca and was hoping maybe someone would be able to confirm for me that you can catch jewies off the beach up Wamberal way? I know they are further north for sure but was hoping to catch them closer to home. The gutters aren't huge there so i'd imagine high tide is a must either on the run in or run out. I will be throwing soft plastics too, unless anyone would like to recommend a killer hardbody! Tight lines my friends
  14. I guess you could work with a smoker box (to hold the wood chips) on one side. Have a read of this post and see if you glean a few ideas re brine and technique .... I recommend cherry wood chips. Cheers Z
  15. Well done mate, I think I saw you in the rain, we were over at Lilli Pilli. SIlly me detached the bimini so we had to sit there and cop it.
  16. Thanks mate, been trying to find some poddies, Used to find them in SWA now can't find them anymore. Cheers mate, how would you smoke it. Was thinking bbq, low temp, one side on and fish on the other side. Also have a weber which might work.
  17. Nicely done Isaac. You got out and caught a variety. If you looking to add variety to the plate maybe experiment with different cooking methods - a tailor around mid 40s would smoke up really well ... you'd be surprised ... and you'd be sent back to catch more 🤘 Cheers Zoran
  18. .... and that's when you're thankful you are still fishing with your old fibreglass rod rather than a fancy new carbon fibre lightning rod ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ 🤣 Well done Rob ... for some reason I have been struggling to catch flatties this season ... so any picture of them brings on a pang. Cheers Zoran
  19. Thanks Chris ... yup nothing like a bit of the washing machine to stir things up 🤢 hahaha Thanks Isaac ... can't complain ... a blessing that made the trip entirely worth it. Thanks Guinness, We were fishing with two outfits both 7ft. One had a Penn 750 SSM, and the other a Penn 6500 SSVi. I think you could do it with a 4500 size letting the fish play out, but generally it would be on the tad small size for the stuff we encounter offshore - especially with a hot bite when you want to get them in ASAP before they spook the rest of the school or the tax man shows up. Thanks Neil, Yes dollies are delicious and they seem to cook up well in various styles. I've had them as cubes in tacos, fried like flattie fillets, in a green curry - they never disappoint on the plate. Thanks for your kind words re the Cruisecraft. It is everything I had hoped it would be. Thanks Rob, it was one of those days where reality did not match forecast... but it looks like it may have played to our advantage. Can't complain. Cheers Z
  20. I have got them on plastics or nippers but this one ate the treble👌 I filleted all the dark flesh out and did them with some other flatty fillets in salt, pepper and flour for burritos with Guacamole. Strong Tate but went down well👌
  21. Very nice there Rob. No complaints about those. As the rain drifted over - I saw it on the radar - I wondered who would be lucky enough to be out there in the rain? Now know it was you. 😁 You are having a fish, then the sky dumps onto you, not much you can do. The worst is when you see lightning flashing down, hear the big bangs then realise the storm is right over the top of you.
  22. Well done Zoran and Co. You braved the conditions and scored some very nice fish👌
  23. Headed out into the Hacking at a very leisurely 10am this morning as the wind had dropped off from yesterday. Pumped some nippers and tried the mullet trap for nada. Drifted flats up and down river for only one whiting then headed to the main channel at low tide to drift the drop offs. The rain came, the Bimini went up and the fish came on. I was busted off by something decent on a nipper, lost a jumping salmon and then pulled up a shovel nose. As the rain stopped I managed a triple hook up of 40+ flatties all on 6lb line with nippers. A few more drifts saw a 52 and 57 come on board and a couple busted me off. Also scored a trevally to keep for sashimi. Pleasant few hours on the water, eagles overhead and terns diving everywhere 👌
