  1. So my questions back to you are- how big is the spool, how much line do you have on it, where is the knot? If I have 300mtrs of braid on a line & I get a wind knot in the 1st 25/50mtrs Im not losing 275mtrs of good braid!

  3. G'day Raiders Perfect weather today. Haven't been out in about a month and was pumped to get out. Arrived at the ramp nice and early but dead low tide. Lots of boats launching but I could only use the far left side so took a while to get underway. Tried a few spots and found a few fish at each. Biggest red nudging 42cm and most around 35. Got two pigfish too. The hybrid paternoster/snapper rig continues to perform well. I am sold on its catch rate, particularly in deep water. Biggest two reds fell to the hybrid today and catches were split 50/50. Was good to get back out. Perfect conditions and lots of sunshine. Thanks for reading. Sam

  4. Thanks mate. When the wind died down we were barely drifting so id say bugger all current. I only fished out to 50m so perhaps the current is running faster out deeper. Thanks Baz I've been trialing a hybrid for deep water snapper fishing. Essentially a 1.5m trace to a 3 way swivel. Bottom of the 1.5m trace is a conventional loop for sinkers that can be interchanged based on depth (paternoster style). Off the three way swivel a 30cm trace with two size 5 octopus hooks (snapper rig style). Gang hook a whole pillie and loop the line (or a small rubber band if you remember to bring them) over the tail to keep it all neat and tidy.

  5. Nice catch there, Sam. Well done! Can you please explain the “hybrid paternoster/snapper rig”?

  6. I'm quite confident that the fish is a pink-banded grubfish (Parapercis nebulosa). At first glance, it does look like a lizardfish, but the continuous dorsal fin and bright blue stripes around the head are the telltale signs.

  7. I agree. Either ditch the line to the wind knot and top up the backing if necessary. Or at a pinch, reverse the braid so the knot is toward the tail end of the line on the spool. Personally, I'd be replacing it. Saving a couple of bucks isn't worth the risk of possibly losing the fish of a lifetime.

  8. If you are going to use it for casting, i would bin the line and spool new line or cut off and start from there is there is still decent line left. If you are poor and will be using it for jigging and dont need casting distance then i would join it with a surgeons knot.

  9. Decided to go out to lake macquarie as I heard there was a few tailor getting around, but I didn't know if the recent rain and fresh water influx would effect the fishing. We didn't see much action in the lake so headed out to moon island. There were a few boats at the bridge hooking into salmon but we couldn't raise one. Got out to the island and spun up a couple of nice tailor, 1 big salmon and a few green eyes to finish up. Great arvo out, nice and calm, dolphins and whales jumping, beats sitting in front of the tv😀

  11. Checked the 5pm report for the next day plenty of times when it said light winds & sunshine only to arrive at the ramp & its blowing 15-20 & overcast. If they cant get it right 12 hours before they certainly cant guess it right 14 days out!

  15. Headed out early this morning near the Lilli Pilli bathes. In the darkness I could see baitfish jumping, and they mostly looked like little garfish. Also there were a few big splashes amongst them. I threw pillies at the jumping fish for a long time for not one bite. About half light, all splashing stopped then the reddies came on the bite. Not one legal one amongst them, though some were close. Caught one large yakka and used it as strip baits. After sun-up, most of the reddies disappeared and a couple of crabs grabbed the baits, so I stayed for a while. The crabs were out from the boat in deeper water, and I pulled out 5 of reasonable size. A bit unusual to catch that many this time of year, but not complaining.

  16. Awesome skills aside, it's refreshing to see someone fishing in business attire. Very debonair,
