  1. Well done mate,! I've caught a few carp on lures before - on tiny suspending minnow types and some bug surface ones in the morning early. We're you getting the yellow belly on the frogs?
  2. Hi Raiders, Very long time no post!! I'm ashamed to say, this was my first fishing session since June! I have a business which is in its second year, and things have been very busy and stressful. On a whim, I took some time off on Wednesday with the missus and decided to go for a fish. We originally wanted to go to Kurnell, but upon arrival found that it was a bit too windy for our liking, so we went over to Gunamatta bay where it was sheltered. Oh how beautiful it was there, no wind, warm sun and clean water. I put a squid head on my 12ft rod and sent it out and left it there, and we sent out a couple of prawns on our smaller rods. Talk about dead. Not one bite for 4 hrs -not even a nibble. Tried live nippers, pilchards, squid and prawn, nothing. And we didnt care. I had been so caught up in expanding the business, that I forgot how soothing it was just to soak a bait and relax. The tide went out, and dusk arrived. All of a sudden the 12ft rod started screaming. I grabbed it and pulled back. Whatever was on the end was huge - and strong. It run for around 100m before I could stop it, even then it didnt feel like I could pull its head around. I wound in a few feet, then it was off again taking line. I managed to get back 50m or so in the next ten minutes then it was give and take back and forth for another 5 minutes. By this time I was exhausted, sweat pouring off me and my shoulders were aching. Then i started to gain more line, the fish was still pointed the other way and struggling, but no runs. Then I did what every fisherman knows NOT to do. I tightened the drag up didnt I. Idiot. Just couldn't help myself. 3 more pump and winds, then PING! Line gone at the swivel. Now I will never know what it was, but believe me, I wont be doing that again - lesson learnt! It was so good to get out there again, I'm going again this arvo. Maybe my mystery fish will pay me another visit! Take care Mick
  3. Hey mate, cuttlefish can let out a red/ brown dye called sepia. I'd say you got it right the first time. Cheers Mick
  4. Hah! Sucked in loser! What a crappy job he did too! Its good to see you guys are keeping an eye on things!
  5. Woohoo!! I mean.. Wahoo! Awesome mate, and like you siad, even better catching it off Sydney! A raider caught a dolly in Syd the other day too.... I have a feeling sydneys waters are going to be packed this weekend after that post!! Take care Mick
  6. Hey Mate, welcome to fishraider! Firstly, The Georges is saltwater. If you have a browse through the fishing chat section on this site, you will learn a bunch of stuff re: targeting jews and other species. Squid, live yellowtail or slimy mackeral, or even slab baits will do for jews. Bream will take anything from bread pilchard and prawns to even crabs and live poddy mullet. And dont forget the soft plastics/ hardbodies if you have the patience. Good luck! Mick
  7. Awesome!! Great first post!! I normally go out to the fads to catch those babies- Syd harbour is definately getting better every year! Well done Mick
  8. Awesome! Wonders never cease... good size turtle too! I take it your crab trap was demolished?
  9. Thats a good feed youve got yourself there! Well done on the jew too. Cheers Mick
  10. We used bait, plastics and hardbodies. I must admit I spend a lot of time sight fishing for the bigger bream with the bread. I never knew you could catch them on bread before. And the sight of the hundreds of garfish milling around was pretty cool. Another time I'd like to go back with a couple of buddies and put in some proper hrs and commitment with the plastics and vibes. Mick
  11. Hello Raiders! Just got back from a 7 day stint in sunny Mallacoota! The first couple of days down there the wind was howling, and there were white caps on the lake. Not the best conditions for a v nose punt! I still managed to get out and have a flick around the bridge down the road from the log cabin me and the missus stayed in. This was a landbased affair. I happened to have some bread in the car so I burleyed up after showing the missus how to drive an ecogear sx 40f with her new ballistix rod she got for Christmas. Boy was I in for a shock! More than 50 black bream came running from cover bold as brass and started scoffing the bread down! 50 per cent of these looked to be over 30 cms too! I gave up on the lures and put on a small hook with some bread on it, and had a crack at polaroiding these bream. Totally immersed now in trying to land one of these big boys (I had never caught a black bream before) I failed to notice Hayley had got bored of my cursing over dropped fish and ventured to the other side of the bridge and started flicking her ecogear around. I was then interrupted by an urgent "babe!" and I knew by the sound of her voice she was onto something. I dropped my rod and was over there in a flash, and sure enough, she had a nice fat bream with the sx40f hanging out of its gob! " I cast under the bushes like you said" she exclaimed happily- I was so proud that she actually listened when I explained to her the importance of fishing near structure. This is the bush that hayley cast under and got the hookup My burleying also attracted schools of around 2-300 garfish which became a bit of a pain in the end. I didnt bother catching any as I was focusing on the bream. We went out a couple of times in the tinny over the next few days, but only for a few hr sessions at a time. In the end we caught a few flatties, and released over 100 Black bream (and ate 6 or 7). People, if you ever wanted to go somewhere to practice catching Bream on lure, this is the place to go. They are there in plague proportions. It was amazing to see.
  12. Well done mate and welcome to Fishraider I hope we see more reports from you. Cheers Mick
