  1. Sooooo jealous. Sounds like you had a ball. Great read to.
  2. Nice going. I love catching salmon off the beach too. So much fun and, just like yourself, normally on twice frozen pillies. I used to let them go as I heard they were not much chop on the chomp but I recently bought one home after it had swallowed my hooks fairly deep and didn't fair much chance of survival. I prepared the fish exactly as previously stated (bleeding straight away, cutting away the blood meat etc..) and made Thai fish cakes with it. It was basically a matter of food processing the flesh with some curry paste, herbs, egg etc.. to a paste then shallow frying. Turned pout to be de-lish. I will be thinking twice now before sending them all on their merry way. I think this is the recipe I used. http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/16590/thai+fish+cakes
  3. Thanks for all the info. I have just returned from Perth where I was working at the cricket (didn't get a chance to wet a line ) and am keen to give prawning a go. Stand by for a report is all goes well.
  4. Hello all, I wanted to try my hand at prawning (bait for me and a feed for the wifey) but really have no idea how to go about it. From what I have read it sounds like now is the time of year to have a crack. Firstly is how? I did some prawning many, many, MANY years ago with my Dad in WA by pulling a net through the water between 2 people. I am not sure if this is a legal method anymore? I have read a bit in this forum about using prawning lights and scooping them up with a net. How does one go about that? Secondly is where? I live in Sydney but have no problem with a bit of travel. Can prawns be caught in the Georges river, Botany, Hawkesbury, The Entrance?? I also hear a lot about moon phase. What is the best moon phase to try my hand? Any other information you think may help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  5. I feel your pain. I fish landbased all year round (yep thats me out there in the wind and rain in the middle of winter). Getting out of bed at ridiculous hours of the morning on my days off. And 97.5% of the time I come home empty handed. But then I will have that one session that goes off. And I'll be doing nothing different. Then all is forgotten and the bug is back bigger than ever. Keep at it. The law of averages says your day is coming. Plus it's summer.
  6. Hello Raiders. I recently got myself an iPhone and was pleased to find quite a few handy applications available for fisher folk such as moon and tide charts, weather reports etc... One in particular is a fishing calendar very similar to an almanac. It displays expected successful fishing days in a month or week view, then as a day view it shows peak fishing times as a sort of graphical representation of success v time. I believe the application itself only takes in to account moon cycles and where they coincide with dawn and dusk periods, not weather conditions etc.. I have a friend who swears by the same application and says it has been pretty spot on whenever he goes fishing. I myself have my doubts. One good thing I have found with the application is you can store very good information on your catches. Date, time, bait, where, weather conditions etc.. I was interested to hear other peoples views on such applications. Has anyone else found them useful, accurate or is the best plan to just get out there and fish?
  7. Whats ya gotta go make'n me laugh so hard me bones rattled like missing teeth in a moonshine jar. Great report/read.
  8. Great report. Really enjoyed reading it. And that flounder....
  9. Thanks guys. Chalk, I fully understand where you are coming from and believe me when I say I don’t take the decision to keep any fish lightly, hell I was vego for 5 years of my life, and the same applied to this fish. I know how big and beautiful a mulloway can grow to be. The decision was made to take this fish firstly as yes it was legal size and secondly if I came home one more time from fishing without anything, well the wife ya know. I did catch a smaller fella, still legal size, that I released. I more often than not practice catch and release and never take more than I need for a feed for the wife and myself. IVZ350, it is a Palagic extreme hypafin 9000. Like all my reels it was cheap (I don’t think I have spent over $300 on one) but with a little tuning and good grease it goes ok.
  10. I am working the evening shift today so thought 'why not get up early for a fish'. So glad I did. Hit Wanda beach just before 5am and set myself up straight out from the car park. I only had a twice frozen bag of pillies for bait so wasn't expecting to much. Wasn't much action, just a couple of small nibbles that felt like tailor, until 6.45am. As I was backing of my drag to put my rod in its holder so I could have a cup of hot chocolate I felt the strangest 'bounce' on my line. Having never caught a Mulloway before I wasn't real sure what it was. I have never had anything on my line that that fought like this. Anyway I was soon rewarded with my first ever Mulloway, coming in at 60cm on the dot. Not huge I know but still very exciting. I had only just finished SMSing a couple of mates (who were not to pleased at 7am ) when I got a now familiar bounce on my line and pulled in my second slightly smaller model that I let go. I might have to ask the boss if I can work more evening shifts.
  11. Ah that takes me back. I grew up in Rockingham (WA) about 1/2hr drive south of Freo. As a kid I would spend all day on one of the various jetties jutting out into Cockburn Sound catching Tommy Ruff (we used to call them Herring). You can catch them on almost anything, hot chips, tinned corn, ciggi butts (I now ensure all my butts go in the bin) bread etc... Not bad fried in a little butter.
  12. I caught 3 of the bloody things in one session about this time last year at Kurnell. Ended up loosing 3 hooks as I was by myself and a little affraid to touch anything that ugly.
