  1. It was quiet but we got fish. Sunday headed up to Long Reef trolling around North Head- nothing. Trolling around Long Reef- nothing. Bottom bashed at a couple of spots on the way, plastics, pilchards, jigs, squid, trying everything but nothing. Several boats down rigging for Kings but no apparent action. Ended up with two Snapper drifting back from Long Reef on squid and lots of rubbish reef fish. But two Whale sightings and the fish for dinner made it a very enjoyable morning outing. Probably lower water temp is keeping baitfish and hence the predator fish further out in warmer waters.
  2. Great work, they are fussy buggers and its often the smaller lures/plastics that work. I don't ever eat them but they are probably the best pound for pound fighters out there.
  3. Yes they can be fussy. A lot of baitfish around 4cm odd so small works well. Heading up to Pittwater by boat from Sydney Friday late afternoon and will be dragging lures the whole way up. Hope I have something to report!!
  4. Went out sunday for a quick session between 10 and 12noon. Headed out to the heads- no bird activity in the harbor but around the corner and there was a beautiful sight. Birds and boiling water. We had one working a fly outfit and I had a small halco metal on a Fugi rod and 7kg mono.. Not long before I got a solid strike and then some aerials and a great fight. These guys fight like hell and on my mid range gear its just great fun. They disappeared before long and we had to get back but was a very fun session.
  5. Heading to Queenstown tomorrow for a week. any recommendations for guides/boats ? I think Lake fishing primarily. cheers
  6. Just opposite the Woolwich sailing club so if they are down below the bridge, they are probably plentiful downstream.. Great fight and run and a good amount of line stripped from the real. Next week I'll try rushcutters bay which holds plenty of bait schools
  7. Beautiful day today so on the outgoing tide I thought I'd try for some flathead or bream. Using some Bonito from a previous trip I caught this Salmon first cast. What a great fight on light gear and what a surprise to see them this far up the river. There has been chopper tailor so the will be smaller baitfish around. Winter fishing!I'll post a picture when I can figure that out
  8. Very nice fish, well done. Our crew are heading back again this year to try and secure some of those GT's with Fast Eddie weather permitting.
  9. Shopping retail in Australia is very expensive. Does anyone have a recommendation for a site offering well priced gear? Wiggle in the UK is great for sporting goods and is generally 40% cheaper delivered to your door than buying retail in Sydney with their high mark ups but they don't cover fishing. Lures, line, reels etc. Thanks in advance
  10. This is a great site. The only one i'm aware of where you can learn and teach as well as brag! Well done to the creators and to the contributors that make it a worthwhile site to visit. Cheers, Keofferam p.s. Ive been out two of the last 3 weekends and there are fish out there, Bonito, Rat Kings , flathead around North Head and Manly and apparently some big snapper off Long Reef. We caught the former but not the Reds but there was a 3.5kg specimen in the other boat in the vicinity.
  11. Looked up a recommended guide in Bali from Fishraider "Fast Edi" and organised a charter for Wednesday the 20th this week. We set of from Nusa Dua in a great boat and crew for a half day excursion looking for GT's and Ruby Snapper. Unfortunately the wind was up and the GT fishing was not on so we headed to the lee of Lembongan and with some excellent jigging gear did a series of 2k drifts jigging down to 200m looking for the Ruby's. Due to the current we were using 500g jigs on 50lb braid and 100lb leaders. Hard work! We lost one jig to a Wahoo or a Dog Tooth Tuna which were in the area- one of the traditional boats fishing in the vicinity had 3 Dog Tooth Tuna chomp through leaders. We managed two Rubys and a couple of Rock Cod. Biggest Ruby was estimated by Edi to be 9kg. They are not great sports fish but you still work hard to get them up 200m. My fish took a bit of line off but mostly it was lift and wind. Still, we were pumped catching them- they are great looking fish with a lot of girth. Also they are good eating so we had a top restaurant cook some of it up for us. Excellent! Great fun day and we will return.
  12. Just got back from a quick outing this morning. At 7 from Lane Cove the rain looked like clearing up(wrong!) so shot out to the heads for a quick troll. On Thursday last week i'd headed out by myself just past North Head towards Manly and hooked a decent tuna. Not exactly sure what kind as I was fishing alone and after a really good fight on 13.5k mono and my hand holding the leader it swam slowly off with my favourite Halco red head ahh! ! A poor knot was to blame, duh! So today was about getting out again and looking for redemption. Twas very rough, windy and rainy at North Head with steep short period waves, yuck. Quickly got a small bonito and headed back home as it was just not much fun n those conditions. Stopped on the way at goat Island and only found leather jackets. At least there is fish in the harbour and still some good pelegics around. Hopefully the weather holds up for next weekend. Cheers
  13. After the last few wet weekends today looked a treat. Got the boat set up last night and headed out at a lazy 7am on an absolute pristine Sydney morning. Normally if I head out that late there is a flotilla of boats heading out but this morning the water was dead flat all the way from Cockatoo past the bridge and really all the way out as there was very little boat traffic. Weve been spoilt all March with the harbour holding bait and tonnes of Bonito and Salmon but it looks like they have moved on. I didnt see any surface activity and no birds feeding- no boats fishing either! just a couple on the drift or bottom fishing. I had three lines out the back but nothing all along from Bradleys Head out past North Head and about a 1k out from Manly. No birds, no fish, and not that many boats on such an amazing morning. Still it was great to get out on such a nice day, Might be time to change strategy, either more bottom bashing or heading out wide to the reef systems. Any ideas?
  14. Ive had a few sessions over the last few weekends with various degrees of success. Always fish but you tend to set your sights higher and higher. Three weeks ago we caught a thumping Australian Salmon on 4.5kg gear which was probably the most fun ive had in ages( and for me thats a long time). On heavier gear they are stubborn fighters, on light gear they are just great fun and take a lot of line. I just found myself giggling with the fun of it and was really happy to release him after. Every trip these days seems to bring fish but some more than others. Today was a bit lean on the harbour with some Tailor( boring) and a Bonito on the troll. Left at 6.30 and back by 9.30. Lots and lots of boats around Bradleys Heads spinning and fly fishing for the Bonito that flip flop around the harbour. Didnt see much success and even at North Head the boats seemed to be doing a lot of waiting without success( was this a correct observation?) They werent in a feeding frenzie but there must be plenty of bait in the harbour as they are fussy. The best fish of the day was a 40cm Bream in Lane Cove river on the Bonito. Thats a personal best. Thats pretty good for a bream? Ive got the photo which i'll post once I can figure out how to get it from my Iphone to this site. Happy hunting
  15. Fantastic result. Can I ask two questions, what was your speed and type of lure for the dollies and wahoo? Thanks
