  1. Go the Shimano tyrnos 30's or 50's they have got great drags in them and you save the $$$$$$$$$
  2. Hey Lads Really at the end of the day mono line will work on no matter what you are doing, and yep braid is more responsive and great in deep water. but unless you are fishing some deep water then you should have a problem with mono, I have fished 60 meters with mono no worries. Braid can be a hard to fish with too at times, I do use braid but for spinning for tuna and chasing jacks. Unless you find that you do really need it why spend the $$$$$, make your fishing easy you will love it more . That shock leader for the braid I mentioned, you don't need to go out and buy the best mono. Some of the cheaper stuff has great stretch and is as tough as nails. Both types of line are good it comes down to what suits you but you will find it hard to get the best out of your gear when you are multi-tasking with it as well. Drag 2 Sunset, How deep is the bay you fish mate and what are you chasing out there? Dave.
  3. Hey sunset, that is not a bad choice of reel a bloody tuff and a good work horse, yeah put mono down and then Top shot with your braid and when you go out trolling run say 40m or 50m of mono as your shock leader. But don't go too heavy with the shock leader(stay around your line class) as you wont get the absorption of the impact from the strike that you need. If you are still pulling hooks out of the fish back your drag down off strike. what are you going to be trolling for? Me personaly if I do any trolling I don't use braid! but see how you go you can always take it all off and start again . Dave.
  4. Tsuribaka, mate when you run the lures run the darker lures up short, because the dark colours silhouette better in the wash off the boat. That wash off the boat is like a giant white screen, when you look at it from the under side. You might want to get yourself a Jethead or a Long Barrel and run them on your longest lines, like the shotgun position or your long rigger your long lines will pick up the most with the Tuna. Run your lines a little longer.
  5. croydon I don't think you will have any trouble with the wider angle beams the 200kHz is good for 300m of depth my X126 is go for 1500m on the 50kHz, and has the wider beam .
  6. Your skirted lures should be surfacing about every 5-10 seconds 6.5 - 7.0 knots, as the other lads have said just watch you gear and look at what is doing. Dave
  7. Tsuribaka Hey mate you will want to lose the chunky hooks off those lures and put something like a SL12S gamakatsu hook on, make sure if you go that way that you put anode tape on the hooks to stop them from going dull on the point from the electrolysis. And I would not go any more than 150 pound mono leader on them any more may be bit of an over kill, the action of the lure would suffer. I have put some pics there for you to have a look at the hooks are the ones that I have mentioned in the post, when you cut your wire cut it the length starting from the bottom of the lure head to the very end of the skirt that is how you measure the wire length. And a point remember with your crimping DON'T use ally crimps on wire only on mono use the double crimps (brass, copper or steel) on your wire. The SL12S hooks I would not fish them on line any heaver than 8-10kg line or you will straighten the on the higher drag settings. Your trolling speed you want about 6.0-7.0 knots you could push it 7.5-8.0 knots but the lures may start to blow out at that speed. I hope this helps you out good luck. Dave.
  8. Hey all, I am new to the forum so hello to everyone and it will be nice to talk to you all. Gorms, Mate I have a 4.2 metre open tinnie with 3.5 metre outriggers on it, they are gunwale mounted the pair cost me about $250 total to make out of two heavy surf rods or you could go buy the actual poles. The mounts are full adjustable stainless rod holders, as for the T-top it is the way to go as for fishability with respect to being in such a small boat you want to be able to move around the boat. If it was me and I was able to put the riggers on a T-top I would, you don't have to spend alot of money on your riggers get the T-top sorted first if you are going to do it. Another point you may want to factor in is the weight of the outriggers, my 3.5m poles weigh next to nothing so be careful not to go to long you only need to get outside of the wash from the boat. It is bit of a fine line you can get away with a bit in bigger boats but the gap gets smaller in the little boats good luck with it. If you need any help feel free to ask. Dave
