  1. I bought the 1000 Nasci and 1-4kg Raider rod for trout fishing 12 months ago, for which it is awesome. it is heavy for a 1000 size, but also very solid. It has since also become a favourite estuary setup for Flathead/Bream/Whiting, flicking plastics, soft vibes and teeny poppers. I can’t see any Flathead causing it grief with over 100m of 8lb braid. I vote the 1000 over the 2500 (which I also have for snapper).
  2. Speaking of the Stradic, I have a 12 month old C5000XG, which up until last weekend has caught plenty of Tailor/Salmon/Snapper and performed beautifully. I then took it up to the NT and it was put to work on a few 15kg Spaniards, with the drag getting a real workout. The drag was very lumpy. Terrible to be honest. Has anyone had a similar experience when putting some decent load on a Stradic?
  3. After countless failed missions, I finally managed a king off the rocks, from the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. A live Calamari under a float proved the final temptation for this just legal (67cm) King. Kingfish Ceviche for the grownups, and pan-fried tails for the kids tonight. The first of many this summer, we hope. Cheers, Ed.
  4. I found this guide to tying an FG Knot a few months back, and it is as simple as pie (after a few practice attempts). My only modification is to not bother tying the final half-hitches past the end of the tag line. The result is a super thin, strong knot, that lasts through many more casts than my much loved ‘Improved Albright’, that served me for the past 15 years I have used it on leader from 20-100lb, and it has not failed me once. Give it a try! Cheers, Ed
  5. Hi Gordo, Any update on the cause of the outboard issue? Sounds to me like your propeller bushes may be gone? I have had this happen before, and when you apply to much throttle, the bushes give, and the prop starts slipping. I am not sure this is fixable. May require a new prop. cheers, Ed
  6. After at least a 10 year hiatus from casting lures in to the surf (boats and kayaks are just far too attractive these days), I found myself walking a beach early morning, with rod in hand, a simple metal slice, looking for a decent gutter, just south of Sussex Inlet. I found a cracker of a hole, and an hour of casting, with a fast retrieve such that the lure skipped along the surface, resulted in a dozen visual strikes, half that hooked up, and 4 landed. Biggest a smidge over 50cm. great fun, and the smoker is being prepped as we speak.
  7. Looks very much like Cahills Crossing, on the border of Kakadu and Arnehem Land to me. Very Crocky...
  8. Hi All... Headed out from Botany Bay at around 9:00am Saturday morning with a plan to find a significant temp break a few miles North-East of Browns, which was showing up on the charts. We started trolling at around the 12-Mile, water temps looked good getting into 23’s… then dropped back to 22’s after Browns.. we forged on and found high 23’s 6 nM North-East of Brows, and things looked good. We found scattered bait from the shelf, with plenty of reports of Marlin strikes on the radio closer inside the shelf (most appeared to be Stripies.... with a lot of them throwingng the hooks). First strike at 3:45pm saw a rampaging blue hit the short-rigger, and start tail-walking away from the boat. He took a couple of hundred metres from the 50W before everything went limp… the double snapped around the swivel… a period of loud cursing followed. Second strike at 4:00pm again saw a rampaging blue hit the short-rigger, and start tail-walking away from the boat. He took a couple of hundred metres from the same 50W, and then continued to do so with great speed… He then decided to go deep…. An hour later and we had him to the boat.. another 15 mins and we had the trace in hand… My first marlin in 5 years... with dozens of fruitless trips since then..... Stats: Blue Marlin Short Length: 2.3m (Charts call it 110kg..we called it 150kg.. it had a girth that resembled John Candy in his prime ) Gear: 24kg Lure: ScentBlazer Slant Head Big Purple thing (purchased 12 months back via a FishRaider package deal.. it’s in the attached photo) Cheers, Ed.
  9. Note that the Shimano Tiagra 50WLRSA (as opposed to the standard 50WA), has a drag designed to fish 80lb line. This means that the drag profile will be more suited to 80lb tackle (it has the same/similar drag setup as the 80WA). My discussions with Welsey's tackle (http://www.wellsystackle.com/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=698), is that you should only get the LRS (Long Range Special), if you intend to fish 80lb. Sounds like that is what you are intending to do anyway. Cheers, Ed
  10. Hey Guys.. Did this school shark have any teeth at all? Looks like a small bronzed whaler to me? Ed.
  11. Hey Jamie, Mate - I am very keen for some JB fishing action. I am sydney based, but have a place in Berrara (30 mins south of Nowra), which I am at every second weekend (am there this weekend). Sounds like there are marlin around, and probably kings etc around the JB entrance/headlands. I have more fishing gear than I can poke a stick at, including blue water stuff (Tiagra's etc), which are desperate to get used. I can go at the drop of a hat, and am more than willing to chip in with costs, wash-down and maintenance, etc... I have a coxswains certificate, and have worked as a fishing guide in the northern territory a few years back. Give me a bell if you are keen for a fish this weekend. Cheers, Ed Cain 0419 416 926
  12. Hi Michael, I am very keen to be part of the crew on game boat out of Sydney. I am desperate to get in as much bluewater fishing as I can. I have more fishing gear than I can poke a stick at, including blue water stuff (Tiagra’s etc), which are desperate to get used. I can go at the drop of a hat, and am more than willing to chip in with costs, wash-down and maintenance, etc... I have a coxswains certificate (commercial skipper), and have worked as a fishing guide in the northern territory a few years back. Cheers, Ed Cain 0419 416 926 ps - I was on a charter 30 miles out of Jervis last weekend, we saw plenty of massive golden kegs busting the surface, but only managed 2 small alabacore all day. I am now more keen than ever.
  13. Hey BillyD, Firstly - I am a massive fishing nut. My fishing mate (with boat) is recently with child, and has had his manhood removed in the process. I am planning to buy a boat in the next 12 months, but very keen to be part of the crew on another boat in the meantime. I have more fishing gear than I can poke a stick at, including blue water stuff (Tiagra’s etc), which are desperate to get used. I can go at the drop of a hat, and am more than willing to chip in with costs, wash-down and maintenance, etc... Oh – and I have a coxswains certificate, and have worked as a fishing guide in the northern territory a few years back. Cheers, Ed Cain 0419 416 926
