Gidday, I am thinking about replacing the 1997 Yammy 20hp 2-stroke outboard on my 12 ft tinny. I was just going to trade-in for another Yamaha, but I was wondering about an 18 hp Tohatsu instead. I don't think a drop of 10% would make much difference on a 12 ft tinny. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with Tohatsu 18hp in particular? Thanks, Mike

I wouldn't want carpet if I couldn't remove it for cleaning. All I have done was paint the ply floor of my tinny with exterior enamel. sprinkling fine sand into the last 2 coats while still wet. This gives a good non-slip surface, but is a bit rough under the feet. I loose-lay a piece of marine HD carpet on top of the anti-skid ply, and it doesn't move at all - no fixing needed. When I get home, I remove the carpet, hang it over the clothes line and blast it with water, from the underside first (to loosen the crud) and then on the upper surface, but from an angle to remove all the gunk. If I am crabbing up a muddy creek and expect to get lots of dirt aboard, I can leave the carpet at home and put up with the rough ply. Mike

It's the fisherman (or -woman) who catches the fish, not the boat. I get a sense of smug satisfaction back at the ramp when I swap stories with other returning fishers in boats costing $20k or $30k, and I got as many fish as they. Regards, Mike

That just makes it even more of a challenge. I know a bloke who had a 10 ft tinny years ago and we went fishing and crabbing a few times. It was cosy and you couldn't take much gear (especially if you started out with a few dillies on board). But he caught just about every kind of fish going around SE Qld from that tinny. They might have their limitations, but in terms of fun per dollar, you can't beat the old tinny - unless a canoe or kyak is your thing. Regards, Mike
