  1. Thanks for the comments, you can fish upto a certain point in the winter however they are few and far inbetween and they are fish have not matured and got the urge to breed yet.
  2. Well the trout season has ended on the 31st May here in NZ, I managed to get a fish in and was rewarded with a healthy 60cm brown at my last spot on the last cast. Had some good follows with one being a good 80cm+ brown swimming after my lure right to edge of the river but he decided not to bite unfortumately, This last trout was awesome to see him hit the lure 2m in front of me and then go pycho for the next five minutes. Anyway will pack the fishing gear until September/October and concentrate on my hunting for the next couple of months. As you can see by the photos there is frost and snow on mountains.
  3. Thank you for all your comments. Smoked both fish and the daughter loved it she even took smoked trout sandwiches to daycare today. Both fish were caught on a tassie devil.
  4. FINALLY broke my trout hoodoo on the Motueka river in NZ, since December last year I have not been able to entice one single trout for five months due to really hot temperatures, low level river flows and bloody tourists. Finally we got good rain which has flushed the river out nicely and the drop in temperature really set the breeding hormones in the trout as they are currently smashing everthying in the water and due to the rain heaps of bugs, nymphs etc have been flushed into the river. I have never seen birds working the river. However it was mothers day and itching to get out in the wild as I have been looking after the kids all weekend. My four year old did not want to sleep on Sunday lunchtime so I said I will take her off your hands for one or two hours, so gum boots on, lure on and both of us were ready for a trout fish, This is my four year olds first trout trip as she has already mastered fishing off the saltwater jetty. As we got to the river is was still a bit high, which is good and plenty of birds working the water, not seagulls but small white birds with long thin beaks. My daughter said daddy over here, so I obliged and casted, after five casts bang Im on, shaking due to the long dry spell I played the fish nicely to the edge and then my hands. For the next five minutes my daughter and I were dancing and singing, my hoodoo finally broken and I found my new lucky fishing buddy. After that my daughter pointed to another spot and said there will be fish there. So I tried and on my last cast bang Im on, I pass the rod the daughter and she fights like it a champion, never seen a four year old run down a side of a river so fast trying to catch up to the fish. A couple of minutes later she had her first brown trout. Took me over 30 years to catch my first and took my daughter 40 minutes. Now she is fully hooked and Im a very happy and proud dad. Both fish were 40cm.
  5. Hi Jim, Not too sure as I just moved here, need to do more research they tend to follow the tide chasing the whitebait for a couple months. The ones I caught were only 200metres from the mouth of the river.
  6. Thanks for your comments. Lee check your inbox I have sent you a message. Take care.
  7. They were caught on the good old Tasmanian devil lures with a fly attached off a dropper on the main line. Looks like the lure is chasing the fly in the water. I have caught trout on both the lure and fly so you get the best of both worlds
  8. Hi all, Decided to have a go for sea-running trout at the mouth of Motueka River on Sunday morning. Technically they are not sea-runners only trout that live in estuary and come in the river at high tide to follow the white bait schools. Second cast and Im on to a good fish approx. 60cm however my leader gave way and he went off to fight another day. I was swearing as re-rigging and thinking not a good start to the day. However in the next twenty minutes I was wrong, I pulled in 3 pan sized browns, sweet had lunch and dinner. To my surprise found a group of pheasants browsing in the grass behind me, beautiful reeve pheasants one male and three females. Still cant believe I live in such a beautiful part of the world. For the rest of the morning a I had a lot of follows on my lure however they tend to become more timid as the sun came up. More reports to come in the following months
  9. Thank you all for your kind words. It will be hard to beat this fish with a bigger one.
  10. This was my second visit to the Motueka river since moving from OZ and boy was I not disappointed. I was using my tassie devils, as on my last trip I caught a nice 50cm brown on it. Found a new stretch of river that I have not fished yet and threw my first cast and bang Im ON! I saw a huge tail come out of the water as he smashed my lure. For the next 20 minutes I ran up and down the bank through shrubs and slid down a mud bank until he tired and came close to shore. When I picked him up I was amazed he was 77cm and close to 4kg and in perfect condition which was amazing as breeding season has just finished. This was the biggest brown I ever caught and a celebration dance was in order. Both my wife and I are holding the same fish. She could not believe it as she thought it was a Salmon because she has not seen a trout that big before in her life.
  11. Thanks for your comments. It is on the top of the south island. I will start the fly fishing once I get a fly rod shortly. Now I understand how fly fishing is more suited to these types of rivers rather than lures. It will be awesome hooking up and catching them on fly. The river flooded three times in the last four months but it recovers very quickly (in a couple of days) compared to Australian rivers after a big flood. Cant wait for the sea runners in October and November.
  12. Well packed my bags with the family and moved from Minchinbury Sydney to Motueka New Zealand for work. After 4 months of settling in I finally got a chance to have a fish at my local river (Motueka river). It was a trip to find out the best spots for fishing as it is the off season at the moment as they are in breeding mode until October, however some parts of the river are open for fishing all year round. It is very different fishing a fast flowing river compared to the lakes in the blue mountains. After 2 hours of looking around and trying all different types of lures I decided to use the old aussie classic, the tassie devil in brown trout colours. Well I was rewarded with a 48cm brown trout from a nice slow flowing section of the river, my first ever wild brown trout, I was as giggly as a school girl when I landed the beautiful fish. Found out this size are considered small and I cant wait for the real season to start in October. Within in the hour it was on my plate with lovely bacon yum. Best thing is it is only 5 minutes from my new home.
  13. Hi all, Just wondering if anyone knows of any locations near Goulburn that hold Redfin please. Heading down later in the week and trying to sneek in a fish. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
  14. Ive been up to Lake Wallice and Lake Lyell four times in the past three months and only managed one small trout on the first trip. I used bait, lures, flies, everything and nothing. Every trip saw no fish caught by any one. This year delta electricity have made it really hard to fish these lakes. They have been pumping the water between the three lakes like crazy causing havoc with the thermoclines therefore shutting down the fish. This year has been by far the worst trout fishing season in the last 15 years of fishing the three lakes. Even during the drought you were able to catch trout.
