  1. Hi all I am thinking of replacing my ageing monochrome hummingbird sounder with a Dragonfly 5 pro. I am hoping some of you here can help me with a few questions : - I am a little concerned with reliability. I am in marine rescue and we have a problem with some of our raymarine gear. My humminbird sounder is over 10 yrs old and working perfectly, could I expect the same from raymarine and should it fail outside of warranty is there a service / repair option? - when on the water I wear prescription polarised sunnies and at certain angles can not see the screen of the humminbird. Would the raymarine be any better? - I often fish in very shallow water and when drifting backwards into sand banks the humminbird transducer simply snaps out however the raymarine transducer does not seem to have that feature?? - Any other fishfinder / chart plotter models in the ~ $550 range to consider? thankyou!
  2. Hi All My boat and most of my gear stays down the south coast however I recently purchased a kayak to keep in Sydney to keep me busy on the odd day off. Having a look around google maps I noticed coalcliff dam but can't find any fishing info on it. Anyone know if fish are in it? species? Cheers
  3. Not sure why pick aren't visible, I can see them? Rebuild is definitely required. I have shown engine to a machinest today and he has picked up some light scoring of the bottom cylinder saying the rings have started grabbing. Interestingly it was the top cylinder that had the head gasket blow through. Also I noticed the thermostat had a lot of crud around it, even though it.was letting water through when flushing perhaps it was constricted. Either way a new thermostat and water pump will be fitted. Carb was cleaned and blowen out with compressed air. As I mentioned before it looked like new inside.
  4. Hi all, I pulled the carb off and apart. Looks like new inside so I put it back on and restarted. Straight away I noticed she was worse and no amount of carb adjustment made any difference. I got the compression tester out again and the top cylinder had dropped another 10 psi. That was enough to convince me that the head gasket is definitely leaking. After disassembly the problem is very clear. I must say I am shocked. This is a motor that has been flushed after every single use and aren't tohatsus supposed to be bullet proof???
  5. How would blocked jets cause one cylinder to be down on compression?
  6. Hi all I have a 2006 30 2 stroke tohatsu. Faults are it refuses to idle but does everything else fine. I have always serviced this motor myself so tried to tune it up. New plugs fitted and tried to tune the carb to nil effect. Compression test reveals 120psi in the top cylinder and 150psi in the bottom So I'm hoping all she needs is a head gasket (there is a small amount of corrosion around the area the head meets the block). I have rebuilt heaps of 4 stroke automotive engines but no 2 strokes. Does anyone have any advice?
  7. Went fishing in the georges river this afternoon with my son, fishing was a bit slow, but still managed one keeper. The best part was when we returned to the ramp at revesby beach to see the usual jet ski hoons mucking up and while winching my boat up one of them mounted the beach and ended up on the rocks. Phone was buried deep in the boat so no pics, but let's just hope the police are monitoring the new cameras
  8. Spent the night of the 1st at Lake lyell with the wife and two kids. What an awesome, family friendly place! Fishing was a bit slow but we still managed to pickup a fat bow and a redfin the first day and a brown on the second day. I've been doing some reading about nsw fish stocking and I can only find reference to bass been stocked into lyell, not trout. Has trout stocking stopped due to the redfin incursion? Would be a great shame as it's nice to go after trout so close to home.
  9. My Boat is insured with Trident, my Dads with GIO. we both made an at fault claim about the same time. I have been paid out about 2 weeks ago, Dad is still waiting for an assessor....
  10. Was lucky, hook didn't go in past the barb although I did hold the fish with an iron grip as I waded back to shore so I could have a look under a decent light.
  11. Not sure on Burrill, however I fish St Georges Basin all the time. Latley we have been having a lot of luck drifting bays with prawns on the bottom and I have gone out at night casting surface lures in the shallows for a few nice taylor - though a word of warning, when attempting to pick up a fish in the dark, make sure your getting the fish and not the lure!
  12. I target flatties atleast every other time I go out, heres what I have learned: - They will hit anything, soft plastics, hardbodies, bait whatever just put it infront of them and if there active they'll hit it. - Specifically on plastics, length and color seems to matter very little. I often just buy the plastics no one else wants in the left over bin. - As much as flatties are very aggressive and easily fooled you can spook them with a boat. I have spooked a school of flatties just by turning the electric on so be as quite and as cautious as you can. - Sometimes it feels like you've picked up weed as they can be dumb and not realise there hooked until they see the boat. Anytime I feel weight, even a dead weight, I treat it as a fish. I have often said 'Bummer i've picked up a stick... oh wait the stick is now swimming up river!'.
  13. The missus has claimed my bait rod as her own... apparently this is now her lucky rod, we fished Kiola on the weekend and I got my rod back for the first time in a year. I caught 5 flatties and she caught zip so now I am not allowed to touch my rod ever again When I purchased this rod and reel I didn't have a lot of money to buy fishing gear so I got something on the cheaper end of the scale, that been said I am tempted to buy the same thing again but would like some recommendations for better gear. Heres what I have now: Okuma Epix EB 40 reel Ugly stick 7FT 5-8KG rod Lo stretch nylon line Heres whats important to me: - must be a bait runner - salt water resistance is high on the list (Okuma has stood up well but the paint is starting to come off after 8 years) - Fairly short rod as most fishing is out of a boat, perhaps a rod even shorter than the one I have now?? - reel with two spools as i'd like to have one with nylon and one with braid - budget $200-$300 for rod and reel. \ Cheers Daniel
  14. It seems my lion deep battery is on the way out after about 5 years. I was under the impression that sealed deep cycle batteries would last a bit longer, perhaps 10 years. Can I have an idea of what sort of life people are getting out of there deep cycle batteries and what brands they are. Thanks
  15. Heading to Fiji in march for a family holiday and the wife has given me a leave pass for one and perhaps two days to go fishing! I need recommendations, what to do where to go who to see. I would like to go game fishing at least once but I would be just as happy up a creek with light fishing gear.
