  1. Agree mate, I like one up one down, both when stationary and slow trolling. I have seen kings flash through while Jewie fishing but have never taken either as a by catch. I like to target them at different spots. As the season gets later and they move up the harbor your chance to target both increase. And you just never know your luck.
  2. Another point jbf1, Dont forget about squiding inside the harbor as well. If you are hunting bait size which by the sounds of your report you are then most rocky outcrops inside Middle Harbour hold tones of the Hawksbury river squid. All the above points are valid. Good jig, dusk and dawn, get it down to the weed ect I have found with the help of some of my Japaneses egi guru work mates that at times you will catch a lot more by working the jig activley. As like all forms of fishing you must experiment as all days are different. Someday a almost dead still retrieve will be all they are interested in. Just mix it up with style and depth till u find them. PS if you get one get the jig straight back out on the same line, there is usually multiple in the same spot. PS those cheaper jigs are awesome for finding your range they do serve a purpose. If you would like to know some exact spots I have been doing ok at then PM me and i will link you up. I also have a friend that writes a good Sydney squid fishing blog let me know if you would like the link. Cheers Paco
  3. Bad luck mate, the big ones in MH are tough. I got done on Sunday night on a boat mooring by a beast. Took a big yakka was on 50 pound gear.
  4. I like snapbacks 2" grub. Mainly because they can survive choppers and other critters with teeth. Im sure most smallish grub/fish styles will work. Just fish as light as you can gear wise.
  5. Was a great report to, inspired me to let those big Jewies swim free. After mack attacks report I have let all Jewies over 80 go. joseph2593 I have found Trevs in good numbers on SP over the last week in MH.
  6. Hey mate, I have a 25lb zing for spinning. Great rod for the price. My mates have tested all the samaki rods in nz with good results. Plus the maker is a local guy so you can get great deals from most shops.
  7. I snell two hooks, rig one through the top jaw or eye socket and one in the tail. fishing a running sinker either to a swivel or straight to the hooks.
  8. I am in a blue polly with a yammie. Noticed the water quality had improved. Livies around in good number so lets hope that rain stays away.
  9. Yeah it was for sure, had a moment after it all took place where I just sat there heart beating and shattered, that why I love them so much I guess. Definitely felt alive.
  10. Hey all, With a touch of JF fever headed out to Middle Harbour near Sugarloaf Bay to again chase some Jewies. Only been living in Sydney for 2 year and just got a boat at the end of Jan, All be it a 3m Polycraft. Caught a few live yakkas then headed out at around 5pm. First hour was pretty slow. Got comfortable and set for a long haul. Not long after id made up a floor bed I heard the drag on my Seagate 3500 peel then stop, dam, nope here it goes again. I grab the rod and the fish takes off. A solid fight eventually leads to my first Sydney Jewie. It measured 65cm. I decided to keep it as id told myself if I get a big one Ill let it go. Things were pretty slow for the next hour or so, lost most of my livies to varies reason and was thinking about calling it quits. I'd had one beast of a yakka the whole time out on a Saltist demon blood pe4 jigging rod with a Avet overhead. Just as I finished pulling in a rod I heard the ratchet drag scream of. Finally the big yakka had been eaten. I set the hooks and line peeled off. A beast of a fight then insured. After clearing it of the anchor rope, then the motor I manager to tangle the one other rod still out. Scrambling I managed to cut the tangled line and continue to do battle. Got the fish to the surface I was amazed, I knew it felt big. Grabbed the boggas and had a shot, missed, panic chuck the bogga and grab the net. Drags backed off swipe dam it doesn't fit, dam the bottom snell hook hooked the net. Commotion follows and fish is lost. Final verdict looked like the gill raker cut the leader. What a night. Cant help but be happy with my first Sydney Jew and a feed but so close to my pb. Looked a easy metre and a real beast along side a 3m boat. Would have loved a pic before sending it back. Might have to get out again tom night. hopefully my mate will b free.
  11. Yeah agree, I always fish a set drag for jewies. U have to just hope a hook sets. Loose drag or free spool they will drop it most of the time.
  12. Yeah there really is a lot of tailor about at the moment. I was a little gutted when i pulled in the livie to see no great teeth marks. That plus pulling line of a pe4 setup had me thinking it may have been the fish i was chasing. Ahh well will be back next week.
  13. Hey All, Went out for a couple of nights mid week, Tues and Thurs chasing some Jewies. Fished around middle harbour. No luck on the jews but landed several nice tailor. All were taken on live yakkas. Ended up keeping two for a feed. Have a average phone pic that ill add when I am not at work. Got one solid hit on a live tailor bout 35cm. Took line for a second or two before dropping the bait. There were no teeth marks at all on the livie so I guessing it wasnt a monster tailor.
  14. I find small plastics used with a resin jig head work well.
