  1. Never ceases to amaze me how regularly that boxed Californian Squid produces Jew. I always have some as back up to freshly caught bait and it regularly lands fish.
  2. Can usually get them in the harbour around the commercial fishing boats. If you're after squid, again try the harbour but off the breakwalls and just inside the entrance to the harbour.

    Clyde River

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has been struggling too.

    Clyde River

Has anyone fished the Clyde recently? Just after some info to see how it's fished after the recent rain. Cheers
  5. Was a snelled 2 hook rig. Sand on the mouth, hence it looking like it had been grabbed there.
  6. More so the tide change after dark associated with the current moon phase I find.
  7. Hit a local Wollongong beach on Saturday night to chase some Jew. Fished the hour before and after the high tide in a nice gutter. Beached this little fella just after the top of the tide on a fresh slimey fillet. Not a monster at 75cm but my first for the year. Poor bugger had tangled with something bigger, you'll notice the chunk missing behind the dorsal fin.Nothing doing apart from this with my bigger baits being picked apart.
  8. Don't have any marks mate but we fished the 60m line straight out from the harbour and kept moving up and down the coast in around that depth.
  9. Had a recent trip to Lake Tabourie with the plan to fish the lake for Flatties and Whiting. Having never fished the area we took a variety of gear and it was a good thing we did. Didn't end up fishing the lake at all but rather land based off Crampton Island and the reefs off Ulladulla. Was a fun trip and most of this was due to the fact we just turned up and set about discovering the local spots ourselves with little reserach and just giving it a go. Will definately be back there at some stage as there is a huge variety of species to chase in a range of locations. Attached are a few pics of our better catches. The island in particular is a great place to fish with numerous species caught.
  10. Yeah it can be tough at times. They were caught on pillies.
  11. Cheers lads. Just out of interest it went 87cm and weighed around 7kg.
  12. Do commercial fishos have different size limits to rec fishos? I noticed 3 well undersize Jewies at a local fish shop today. Would have only been around 50-55cm.
  13. Spent 3 days on the Clyde River last weekend. Did the usual houseboat trip however didn't have another boat tied up to it like usual which adds some flexibility. Fishing was fairly tough going. Managed a few Bream and a thumping Trevally on the Friday, all falling to Prawns. An hour after the tide turned after dark I managed a nice healthy Jew taken on a fresh slab of Mullet. It gave me a bit of curry on the 12lb set-up but I was able to subdue it and after a pic it was released. I've attached a pic below. Not sure why but the pic loads sideways. Saturday was terrible with nothing landed despite trying numerous spots. Sunday was better with some nice Flathead around the 40-50cm mark which were kept for a feed. Again about and hour after the tide turned after dark 2 rods got absolutley belted, the first i'm sure was a big Jew as there were the unmistakeable big head shakes and 2 very distinct runs. Unfortuantely it was too much for the smaller set-up and it couldn't be slowed. The second I assume was a big ray as it just hit ans ran and didn't look like slowing. Good weekend and I recommend the Houseboat to use as a home base for an assault on the Jewies on the Clyde.
  14. Good for fish cakes but I prefer to slab them up on the spot for Jewies.
  15. No problem, always happy to share spots It can be quite productive there. A lot of people don't realise there is actually a small reef structure a few hundred metres off the beach there. I believe the Jewies live in and around this structure and roam the beach at night when feeding.
  16. Wollongong, down towards the golf course. Where you walk through the golf course to the stretch thats actually called Coniston Beach.
  17. Decided to check the beaches yesterday to see what state they were in after last weeks weather. I found a stretch of sand with a nice big gutter running parallel to the beach and with little variation in the tides decided to wet a line after dark. Plan was to fish the last 2 hours of the run out and the first hour of the run in. First baits were soaking by 7.30pm, I had 2 rods with frozen but recently caught squid intended for Jew and and a lighter outfit with pillies with the aim of beaching a Tailor for slab baits. It wasn't long before one of my larger rods goes off but it had the signs of a Stingray which it was. It was beached shortly after and upon release my other larger rod goes off and a nice Sambo of 60cm is beached. Shortly after realease my light outfit buckles and a small flathead of 38cm is beached and I also release it. All goes quiet until about an hour after the tide change where I lose 2 fish on my lighter outfit, one to a knot giving way and another to thrown hooks almost at my feet. They both felt like a small Tailor or Soapy. One of my larger rods get's bitten off to what I suspect to be a Shark and I land another 2 Sambo's of 60cm all within 20 minutes. With that it was time to head off but it was an eventful night.
  18. Thanks for the info. I'll be in Port Stephens in 2 weeks so I'll be sure to put this info to good use.
  19. Had a trip down the Clyde River last week chasing Jewies. Fishing was tough with only couple of Bream, Flounder and Whiting landed over 3 days and an undersize Jewie on the last mornng. The Jewie went 68cm and below is a link to a video of it. Conditions were great however it was a battle to find the fish despite using a mix of fresh and live baits and plastics. There had been a bit of rain a few days before the trip however not enough to shut it down I thought. Has anyone else found it to be a battle down there? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3f6_PG1vEY
  20. Depends on what you're after buy here's a few spots that deliver for me. Jewies at the bridges, chinamans point and along the right hand side of the river as you approach big island. There's other Jewie spots but you can't have them haha. Just look for a depth of around 6 metres with a little bit of structure. I've found flathead all through the river and the bream can be found easily around the areas with rocky shorelines or as mentioned by someone else, the oyster leases. There is a long straight stretch leading up to little island in about 4 metres that I've done really well on the Whiting. Yakkas can be burleyed up at the big island Jewie spot I mentioned and at the back of big island. Good luck and I may see you on the water as I'm down there late Feb early march.

    Durras Advice

Thanks for the feedback. I'd be keen to get into some big Whiting so that might be my target. Cheers
  22. I'm heading down to Durras this weekend and having never fished the area I'm after any advice. We're staying at the Lakesea caravan park and from what I can see I'll be able to fish the lake straight from the park itself? A bit of research has shown the prawning can be good as well? In addition how does the beach behind fish? Am I wasting my time trying for some Jew at night off the beach?
  23. Thanks for your input mate. What size reel are you using? Looking at the maximum line rating on my reel the 25lb mono was too big for it. I've since re-spooled with 15lb. As I said I previously I had it spooled with 30lb braid and had no issues with casting which led me to believe the 25lb mono was the problem. I'll know in a couple of hours anyway as i'm hitting the beach again tonight.
