Hang on, you say it’s an “optimal” do you mean it’s an “Optimax”? If so, then it’s a whole different ball game, I personally wouldn’t buy a 20 year old Optimax.

    Hahaha yep sorry typo

    Meant optimax

If it was a 20 year old Yamaha, Suzuki etc would you buy it?

Is it cause it's a mercury?

  2. Hey raiders,

I'm looking into buying a quintrx 5.7m boat that has a 2003 mercury 115hp 2 stroke Saltwater optimax with 517 hours on it

Just wanted to get your thoughts on the reliability of these motors given its age?

I've normally always had japanese motors like Honda or Suzuki

    Any input would be appreciated

    Cheers

  3. Hey Raiders,

I've always wanted to have a baitcaster in the arsenal. And I managed to get a abu garcia reyrex baitcast rod 4-8kg 6'6" for a really cheap price on clearance.

I wanted to match it to a reel, but I got no idea what size reel or brand to match it with since I've only fished with spin gear

I was told to match it to a 150 size reel, and to put slightly heavier braid to top backlash?

I saw the daiwa 100 strike force reel on clearance . Wondering if this would be a suitable reel for this rod. Maybe with 15lb braid

Any suggestions are welcome. Happy to spend up to about $200 for a reel.

    Thanks

  5. Just realised its been 10 years since I joined Fishraider. Which came as a big surprise. Felt like a year ago when I first signed up.

Went through highschool, University and now work with fishraider :) Kept me sane throughout that time.

Not sure how it works, But maybe I am entitled to long service leave now that its been 10 years 😂

But thanks to the Fishraider community for all the help and advice throughout the years.

  6. Hey Raiders,

Has anyone used the Penn Slammer IV for beach fishing and casting. Just wanted to know what your thoughts were on it.

I understand its meant more for reef and game fishing. But curious to see how the casting ability is on it.

    Thanks guys

Agree 100% buy real/genuine marine carpet, not cheap Bunnings or boating supermarket stuff, it's dearer, but will last for years. Ribbed carpet is OK, but it seems to suit bigger boats (appearance only) glue it down using contact adhesive, but only glue the boat floor side, make sure you start the carpet dead straight, because it will stick instantly.

Thanks for the info. Not sure where to buy genuine marine carpet. Can you Pm me any suggestions.

Also I'm worried about things getting stuck in the ribs and becoming harder to remove?? So I was thinking non-ribbed would be better?

  8. Hey Raiders,

I am redoing the flooring and carpet of our boat. Just curious if people use ribbed or non-ribbed carpet.

Any pros and cons would be appreciated. This is the first time doing it myself.

Also is there and brands people would suggest, send me a PM.  Was thinking of getting it from the main boating shop that is 3 letters long

    Thanks in advance

  9. Hey Raiders,

I've been reflooring my runabout during this lockdown, Ive cut the marine ply to size and now it comes to the next step of sealing and putting on the carpet.

Just curious what people have used to seal/waterproof their marine ply and also what adhesive people used to glue the marine carpet to the ply?

I was going to use Septone Contact adhesive for the carpet, but not sure what sealant I should use.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks everyone

  10. Hey raiders ,

Im heading to the snow in a couple days, and I was thinking of hiring a boat for a day or towing the boat down to do some trout fishing.

However the boat hire places all said the water level is too low and they are not hiring boats.

Just wondering if anyone has gone to Lake Jindabyne for a fish over this winter and if its worth bringing the boat down with us.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Cheers

  12. Hey guys

Gonna go up to coffs for a few days and gonna take the boat up as well.

Just wondering if the Spanish mackerel are still around this time of year. I don't want to go too far offshore, don't think I'd feel comfortable going to south solitary island. But I'd probably go to split solitary and try for snapper.

So my question is can I target Spanish mackerel not to far offshore and how is the reefs around split solitary?

    Cheers guys
