  1. HI Fisholb, I would love to know where to look for this combo at the price of $49 delivered. Could you please let me know where you have seen it and post or PM me. Thanks heaps Steve
  2. Thanks guys. I did end up buying one and it worked an absolute treat. Caught some yakkas at about 9pm and they were still super healthy by 4am the next morning when I woke up. I was in a bay with very little current though, and then drifted for flathead with them. It worked perfectly in both those situations, but I think it would not be the best option if you were anchored up in a strong current. By the way. Best catch with them was a 65cm flathead. It devoured one of the larger yakkas whole. Regards Steve
  3. Thanks guys, I am now thinking of a graphite combo. I see it as the ideal opportunity to teach the kids how a rod and reel should be treated, and gives me the perfect opportunity to explain the rod will break if it is not treated with respect. Who knows......they might even believe me!! I'm probably looking at the smaller combo (the 2500 as opposed to the 5000) as there is very little chance of catching a kingy or salmon or the like in the area they fish. And I think it is much more fun with a big rod bend on lighter gear rather than skull dragging the fish in with a javelin. Thanks for your advice. Regards Steve
  4. Hi everyone. I'm looking for a good quality combo to buy kids for christmas. I'm hoping to get away with under $100 per combo considering I'll need to purchase 6 of them. (Relatives kids - not all mine) To give some sort of idea as to the conditions they would be using the rod, more often than not they would be in a boat drifting in a river, chasing flathead, bream and the like. Occasionally they would be chasing the same species from the bank. The kids are aged between 8 and 15, so I would want to stay away from Graphite rods as I don't think they would give them the required tlc. Just after a nice combo that will last a few years and don't care if it comes from a tackle shop, ebay, bcf big w etc Thanks heaps.
  5. Cheers guys, Found one at a large tackle store and thought why not give it a crack. I was originally going to manufacture something myself, but thought why bother when you can buy one of these for $12 Hopefully i can shake this flu and get out on the weekend.
  6. If I am river fishing and wanting to keep some poddies or yackas alive, does anyone see a problem in hanging this over the side of the boat to store them in. Obviously so long as the bait fish is bigger than the hole in the mesh. I'd love a live bait tank but hate the idea of running a pump all night and drilling the transom of my old fibreglass boat. Love to hear your thoughts. Cheers

    life jackets

Hi Guys, just after some clarification for a friend. We often fish at night, my boat is over 6meters so i have no issues with wearing life jackets at night. But my mates boat is 4.7 meters so the rules seem to stipulate he needs to have a life jacket on anytime at night when operating the boat. So does sitting in an anchored boat fishing constitute operating a boat? And what about when he sleeps, does he need a life jacket on while he is seelping on his boat? 9 out of 10 times he is out at night his boat is tied to mine and we fish side by side. Does that mean during the night he can be sat 1meter away from me yet he needs a life jacket and i dont? Maybe im not understanding the rules properly and if we dont get a good answer here we will approach maratime. But with all the wisdom around on this site im sure someone will know the rules back to front. Thanks guys (and gals)
  8. Im glad someone can catch a jew in the hacking. Ive spent about 15 nights out there in the last year for not a single jew. Tried everywhere (except the right spot apparently) and all sorts of fresh baits. Congats on the catch.
  9. HI Huey, I think you sent me a PM regarding pricing for the Raymarine............but ill be stuffed if i can find any PM at all. Maybe i deleted them by mistake........no idea (im pretty ordinary at computers) If you have sent me a PM is there any chance you could resend. Thanks and sorry for the stuff around. If anyone else sent me a PM i have no record of it either?????????
  10. thanks guys. Just 1 more question...can anyone tell me the difference between a 20/200khz transducer and a 83/200khz transducer. Thanks
  11. Thanks guys, I have now started looking at the GME G Series which i had not even considered before. At what depth do you think the G Series 600Watt 50/200khz transducer will be accurate too. I noticed that the Lowrance Elite-5 DSI reads the bottom to 76meters, so this may not accurately read all the bottom at the peak? (yes i know there is more than just the bottom to read) But to head up to the next Lowrance it appears i would need the HDS-5 Gen 2 which gets up there price wise as i need to then purchase a Navionics card. I do like the option of sticking with one brand (GME combo, epirb and VHF radio) as i understand you can have the radio talk to the GPS combo in case of emergency. Has anyone actually used the GME G Series? and what is your thoughts? Thanks
  12. Hi all raiders. I am in the market for a new sounder/plotter. I am setting up to go offshore fishing, probably as far as the peak. Ive always river fished and travelled just outside the heads but now want to use my boat for what it is capable of. My boat is a smidgen over 6meters and ive owned it for years so am very sure of its capabilities. But before going into the big blue i want to make sure everything is spot on. I will be getting an epirb, renewing my marine radio, and looking for a new sounder/plotter. I was expecting to pay up to $1000 for a good colour model sounder/plotter but after a bit of research have come away with nothiong but confusion. Has anyone paid a similar price for a unit that they think is the bees knees? I am always happy to buy something on referal. especially if i get recommended the same product from a few people. It also appears that with some models you buy the unit, then have to pay hunderds of dollars more for the australian maps. Do some of the units come with maps already installed? Thanks in advance for your help
  13. thanks for all the replies. I have now read through all the legislation and am of the belief i am doing nothing wrong. If you choose to have no beer on your boat........thats fine............its your boat. But if i want to have a beer every couple of hours, i dont think that is a bad thing either. I was concerned that i might go over if i need to move the boat immediately after finishing a beer, but now realise the rules are like on the road where they will give that alcohol in your mouth time to settle. I will keep having a beer while fishing, because a beer every couple of hours will not put me in an illegal situation. I want to reiterate, i am not out there to get drunk, i am just one (as are my friends and family) who enjoys kicking back with a beer to relax. Cheers
  14. Hi Guys, I'm sure im like a lot of you in the fact i like a beer while fishing. I will often have 3 or 4 beers in a 6hr fishing session, but after watching some TV of late it has occured to me that i might actually be over the limit at times. I always drink in moderation on the boat as i have to drive home. I drink to enjoy, not to get drunk. But i am worried about being over the limit while fishing. Is it cool for a skipper to drink on the boat if he is anchored up, not planning on moving any time soon? When i say skipper i mean owner driver of a pleasure craft, not a commercial craft. What happens if you do get caught, can it affect your motor vehicle drivers licence?
