  1. And Today I sight cast and nailed this feisty bucketmouth which went like a demon and a great test for my new combo hard amongst the mangroves
  2. Its been pretty quiet on the fishing front and due to lockdown on the central coast I have been sticking to the local creek around 5mins from my house. Have had some good sessions and loads of donuts in between- but I have put all my lures to test and a mix of results from some cracking EP to Flattie coming onto the deck. Here are a few from the last month or so and hopefully now the weather is warming up I can get more fish and get into surface flicking on the flats. Tight lines ya'all Some of the gear used includes: Crony RockFish 3-6lb and Aggress III 6-14lb rods DMK BlueMoon reels in 1500, 2500 and Daiwa Aird 2000 ExactDepth Braid in 8 and 10lb (white) Berkley Vanish Fouro 10 and 12lb Munroes 2" Grub motoroil and Low Tide Lures Thump Grub 2.5", Prawn 2.25" and SlimMin 3" Jigman Jigheads in 1/16oz in sizes 4, 2, 1 and 1/0 Anthony
  3. Never heard of a glass rod breaking unless high sticking it, which all rods will break. Have broken plenty of graphite rods over the years casting slightly above the cast weight recommendations and using oversized line - You would have to be doing something seriously stupid to break a glass rod, so much so its almost unheard of and I am yet to meet any serious fisho who fishes the stones or off the suds who have broken one... Like I said in my previous post if using lures go graphite but dont bother with rods you need around 250gm just to cast them like the Prevail, go an ABU Veritas or Daiwa in around 10-15kg with up to 100gm cast weight. if using bait go Composite or Glass- yes they are heavier, but have more grunt than a graphite stick and you can still use it for light lure work no problems if spinning metals or hard bodies for bonnies, striped tuna and other pelagics. Good luck mate with the purchase Tight lines Anthony
  4. I have used a 15-37kg rod with a Spinfisher 950SSM and it was the worst rod and reel I have ever picked up- hard to cast unless casting 250gm+ and felt like I was holding a broom handle not a fishing rod. I have fished the beaches ALL my life and the most I have ever needed to use is a 8-12kg can ping 8oz leads and whole yakkas a blasted long way. I can cast my MT9144 glass rod further with same weight than my mates who have ABU, Daiwa and Shimano high end graphite rods... My personal opinion- Graphite rods are completely over-rated off the beaches and off the stones unless you are throwing big plastics or hard bodies/metals around- for big baits I will go old skool fibreglass or composite EVERY time. I recommend a Gary Howard MT9144 or Bulldog MT7177 for long distance casting, it will outlast, outperform and do everything better than any Penn (or any other graphite rod) on the market and prob a helluva lot cheaper. As a fishing guide I only tech my clients with bait and we use Glass or composite rods 100% no graphite and I have been using glass rods for over 40years off the beaches - I have tried several "so called" top shelf graphite rods and they just dont do it for me personally, I dont like that action of the feel of graphite throwng any kind of bait in any conditions, but thats just me. For throwing lures I ONLY use carbon/graphite rods so I am not being a snob about my gear I just know what I like to use and what works for me. Good luck finding the right rod for what you want mate
  5. Yeah at different times they seem to show up- I am no expert some days I get em on the run out and other days and different spots produce on the run in tide. hard to pick where they will be so just keep changing lures and walking/changing spots till you find them really
  6. Thanks guys I have caught around 25 Mullet in the last 6 weeks all on lures from the same stretch of creek- the biggest going a whopping 57cm which was on a Zman Grub motoroil 2" down to a little 10cm poddy which took a HM Lures FB35 crank only the day before yesterday... Have never caught so many mullet before esp this time of year- so they are sticking to the creeks. The few I have kept for strip baits have been full of roe and milt so they didnt spawn at all between May and late June which is when they traditionally head our of the rivers and offshore to breed. A few Bass and EP have come in but not in numbers or the size of last year at the same time- I am guessing the floods earlier this year mucked around with their breeding cycles. Always a good sign when you catch different fish on different days from the same locations- the creek is really inn good shape but last year was the best I have seen since moving from Sydney back up the coast. Winter is usually pretty slow, but at least I have the Mullet giving me some good workouts even on 15lb chasing big flatties they go hard and are a real handful to get to the bank, I have never seen my 2500 Tierra scream like that 57cm model. Hopefully convert the mullet to something a bit better on the plate this weekend off the beaches. Tight lines ya'all Anthony
  7. So with Lockdown meaning we cannot take any classes, but that doesnt mean I have stopped fishing altogether.... With my new tackle shop underway and stocking some awesome new lures here in the central coast has kept me busy and I have been sticking to local adventures around my local creek solo testing out some new lures from Aussie lure makers like Low Tide Lures, Munroes Lures, HM Lures, Madmic's Lures and also using The Jigman Jigheads which are all awesome to ouse- matched with some Dizzy Scent and we have a winning formula. All these fish were captured within 5mins of my house in feeder creeks and often right under houses so its encouraging to see some great fishing in the middle of winter.
  8. We have seen some cracking fish on our guided beach and estuary classes in the last 6-8 weeks, with some big Taylor, Salmon and Bream coming on in numbers. The Salmon are starting to school up and the taylor are out in force but numbers outweigh their size with most going between 30 and 40cm. we have lost a plethora of monster Greenback Taylor and Sharks - more than we could count with an average of 3-5 rigs bitten off on 50lb and 80lb wire, there are some monster fish around the beaches ATM All the youngsters got amongst the action with some thumper fish hitting both the sand and the wharves. Enjoy the piccies Tight lines Anthony
  9. Thanks everyone for your comments and likes - the smiles say it all... and this is one of the reasons I love being a fishing guide on the beautiful central coast (besides I get to drop a line in at my favourite locations and also get amongst a few fish). The things I teach in class are pretty basic- rod and reel selection, line, leaders, tying rigs and putting the bait on the hook aswell as some guidance on casting and what to look for which all increase my clients knowledge so they can continue where I left off and catch their own fish using techniques I learnt as a kid who was taught by my grandfather fishing the same areas. We hope to soon as bait colecting classes later this year and specifically breach worms and nippers will be most of what we will be teaching people - I need to get my worm-on as I havent caught beach worms for nearly 30years so I am very rusty, but I am looking forward to the challenge so I can share this with others I have to admit not much beats the buzz I get from watching some newbies pick up new skills and use those to catch some great fish - but as any fisho knows nothing beats catching your own fish. Hopefully I can get some more reports up in the future and we will see how my return clients have progresses - keep you eye out for young gun Cody (10yo with the bream in this thread)... He is a natural fisho and has learned a LOT in class and can put this all into catching stonker fish regularly from the local creek... This kid will be coming to beach classes with me in the new few months and we hope he can progress to using lures and catching Bass and EP along with flathead from around the local areas. Tight lines everyone Anthony ❤️
  10. They are same as Trevally but not quite as much meat but taste pretty much the same. I reckon they are pretty good but you need a few good sized ones to make a feed
  11. A few piccies from my guided estuary and beach fishing classes on the central coast (Narara Creek and Broken Bay) We have had a great season so far with some real stonkers coming in and number of bigger fish lost - but thats fishing! Enjoy the piccies Tight lines and screaming drags Anthony
  12. Thanks for the replies everyone, I have had a blast caching Bass and other estuary species which I have longed to catch for many years- the best part is going to spots I have discovered myself and pulled some good fish from those spots, and I couldnt have done it without some quality lures and persistence. ... With Bass season coming to an end it is nearly time for me to try for a Jew on lure, from the beach... I think thats going to be a huge challenge but I am truly up for it. Till next time Tight lines and screaming drags Anthony
  13. Mullet was on the ribbed fish- I cannot get a mullet to take a surface lure of any sort but hopefully as I get better with cicada and poppoers/stickbaits I will see more hit the deck
  14. Thanks mate in the spots I fish not really so much, they arent secret spots by any means, but some other spots are heavily fished esp around this time of year.
  15. So I havent been posting since late October and since then I have been getting the itch to get amonst some creek bass from a local skinny creek up here on the Central Coast. In between Bassing I have been chasing EP and other fish around some other creeks and I have pulled in a few new PB's, lost some absolute stonkers who smoked me on 12lb and 12lb leader + managed to get a few fish on surface which is a first for me as I have never been into surface fishing much. I have also had a number of NEW species on lure including Freshwater and Saltwater Eels and most recently some Mullet taking a liking for soft plastics. Majority of the fish fell for Madmic's ribbed fish in either dirty worm or motoroil colours on 1/16, 1/20 and 1/24th jigheads in sizes 2, 1 and 1/0. The surface Bass fell for River2Sea cicada pops and a cheap BiteMe cicada lure How good is that surface BLAST when a Bass engulfs your lure - highly addictive I must say... Cannot wait to do more exploring and hopefully get some new PB's this year. Tight lines and screaming drags
  16. So with COVID ongoing and shifts taking a dive I had loads of spare time to flick around my local area in winter and beginning of spring. Caught a plethora of fish ranging from Bass and EP's to bream and Flatties all on Zman Grubz motoroil or electric pink colours with 1/12 jigheads. Enjoy the piccies
  17. A few weeks ago fishing late arvo off my local beach I got a double header on Tarwhine - now in 20years fishing the same stretch of sand I have never caught or heard of anyone catching Tarwhine from this spot. Made a lousy session worth while both fish were keepers but I returned them both to the briney. Not very often I get a double header of anything, but I originally thought I was onto a thumper Bream or a soapie jew - both disappointing and exciting at the same time.
  18. A quick search of the weather and wind direction then a look on google maps should indicate areas that could be out of the wind. Ive only ever caught Whiting on live worms or pippies - they will take both so you could also try digging for pippies around the open beaches on a dropping tide. Hope this helps
  19. Live beach and blood worms are def the go for the 'ting in winter- the best places to fish are up the flats and around the beaches like Fingal Beach in front of the caravan park , One Mile Beach, and Anna Bay Beach. Swing past and talk to the blokes at the local tackle shop in Salamander or Nelson Bay they know where the fish are biting and maybe join the Local port Stephens Fisho's group on face book there a lot of good info from the locals there on what is biting where. Good luck mate Tight lines Anthony
  20. All fish and eels caught on bait (chicken strips and Taylor strip baits) - lucky the eels snapped the line as I tried to drag them up the bank, otherwise I wasn't looking forwards to retrieving hooks from them and would have cut the line anyway.
  21. hey mate I have fished the coast all my life and there are plenty of awesome rock spots around- even though I am not a keen rock hopper I have fished a few spots over the years with mates who are dead set keen and have had some memorable sessions from these locations North Avoca in the cod hole can be a good spot for Reds, and also Winnie Bay but its a loooooong walk in and back out esp with a lot of gear, make sure if you head to Winnie you go with someone who knows the area and never turn your back to the water- it can be a pretty dangerous spot in a swell and no fish is worth your life mate- but Winnie Bay is the best rock spot I have ever fished. Expect to catch blackfish, pigs, reds, bream, rock cod, sgt bakers. kings, bonnies , trevs and the odd shark Dont underestimate the other rock ledges around bateau bay, forresters and also down the southern end of the coast - Pearl beach, Patonga and Putty Beach I have caught pan sized reds in numbers off the beaches so the bigger ones could literally be round the corner. Good luck with the hunt mate
  22. Tackled the local Creek waaaaaay upstream in very ordinary cond last sat nite was rewarded with these- the smaller 1 went 33 and the bigger went 41cm and pulled some string, lost a much bigger model on 6lb and also nailed a couple of XOS eels both going well above the 1.5m mark couldnt get piccies of them or even get them up the bank. One of the best local sessions I have had in a while.
