  1. Like the title says I had some pilchards salting in a tub...about 2/3 of a kg block left over from my beach session. Anyhow it's been over 2 days and I was just going to put into small zip lock bags. Between me opening the garage and getting some bags the dog must have pushed off the plywood off the top just and he helped himself to about 4 or 5. I know I am cruel but I couldn't help but laugh out loud as he vomited 3 or 4 times to get them up. Not surprisingly he processed to drink plenty of water after that. I think he learnt his lesson. He is fine by the way. My dog cannot be killed. He is tough.
  2. VSR = Voltage Sensitive RelayI'm impressed. I don't think anyone so far has said duel batteries. I hate when those batteries fight each other. It gets real messy.
  3. I think you were pretty unlucky not to hook up casting to a school within sight. Anyhow, since you're camping and need the bait to last, next trip take salted pillies or buy the bait before hand and salt yourself prior. $2 worth of table salt might make all the difference. Good luck
  4. I thought I did well at my local hard rubbish week. picked up a bmx that I can ride the break wall on. But a boat is way better.
  5. I don't mind a fish cake done right myself. I bet your cat loves em too. A 10kg tailor is just awesome. Almost unbelievable really as Ive not found one over 40cm. Tailor taste much better so bring em on I say. I spun a 20g chrome lure at dusk also but they weren't there unfortunately.
  6. Just reporting how I went last night. Fished from about 5pm to 9pm with a 8:30 high. Ended up with 3 salmon between the 3 of us, 1 ray and 1 small crab. Biggest fish going 65cm. I only caught one salmon and the ray but at least I got the biggest. But anyway, what a night to be out. Just beautiful! Not a breath of wind at all. Winter nights are easy when they're like that. I had no luck hooking up on ganged whole pillies so moved to a single long shank hook (half-pllies) to get the fish. Here's some photos to enjoy.
  7. I'm gunna be heading through Lavis lane tomorrow afternoon to fish the incoming tide in the arvo, fish sunset and past the high tide till about 10ish. Can anyone tell me which way to the better gutters? north toward anna bay or south to the wreck and beyond? I will be fishing for salmon and tailor. Bream if they're on. Has anyone been out there fairly recently and done well? Cheers guys and I'll be sure to report back if I hook up.
  8. Heard of the wirrah cod before. Now I know. Good idea on the bail arm.
  9. About two weeks ago I lone-fished a jetty near the Stockton ferry terminal. Late into a Saturday night I was using small baits and probably my favourite rod at the moment, a 1-3kg bream stick. 1000 symetre reel too. My most expensive setup to date. Anyhow, I had left it against the metal railing whilst I went for a leak nearby. Of course after having no bream by this stage over about 15cm, and I was possibly a bit tired and careless, I thought this perfectly safe to do. So I am just tucking my shirt in and I here the tink tink tink of the rod jumping around. I rush over and splash I am too late. Flathead 1, me nil. Its pitch black and I torch to the water but I cant see the rod so I swear and sulk for a bit and then keep fishing with a second rod. Flathead seemed to be on from here on so I guessing that's what took my treasured rod and reel. None legal size however. Went home without a feed. Ventured out again saturday night to the breakwall. Just relaxing soaking some salted pillies and this strange fish is landed. ID please. After a while no bites I feel that I am over the breakwall because I dropped my car keys out of my pocket but luckily they landed an inch from disaster between rocks. Time to head back to the ferry terminal and show em whos boss hey. I have a brand new combo now this time a 7ft 2-4 kg stick which I think will suit me much better. Tide was starting to flood now. On slow retrieve I managed a nice fun fight with a 46cm flattie which was netted. Then a 36cm one. Tried really hard for a hat trick so I could just go to bed but I just couldn't find it and by about 2am gave up but this time I felt like I got back two points on those Newcastle harbour flatties. Bugger you to take my rod ha ha! Good to get a feed
  10. I enjoyed reading your post. Better than I can do off that wall.

    Braid

Yes. Braid has zero stretch which makes it easier for a fish to get off the hook. That is, if you managed to entice a fish in the first place as braid is also very visible underwater. Hence most fisho use a length of fluorocarbon leader. But if you don't have that plain cheap mono would be better than nothing.
  12. This is a good catch and a good read too! Thanks
  13. I think I'lll try that next time, I appreciate you telling me, Thanks I stabbed em because I recently read the ike jime website and was trying out this method. Ultimately I want it to be quick for the fish. I do practise the neck break on other species normally aus salmon. Cheers fellas for the thumbs up. My best fishing for ages!
  14. I love fishing that wall and you have really nailed it! Well done.
  15. Hey Raiders, first report here. Good Friday it was, and I have borrowed a mate's tinny for the long weekend. He is the primary carer at the moment for both his little girl and his wife and can't use the boat, so I'm kinda doing him a favour by putting some fresh fuel through the motor Fishing with another mate who is non fisher and his girlfriend who is a keen one. They are new to the area from SA so I was feeling like a bit of a tour guide ha ha. Also this was my first time actually launching and skippering a boat since getting my licence in January (well not entirely true, but by myself anyway) so I was hoping to send em home with at least a feed. I don't have the best luck normally. Launched at Karuah to fish the oyster racks. Headed to some old racks and anchored. I throw in a bait of frozen slimy mackerel piece on a long shank hook. I grab my other rod (the bream rod) and literally bang the bait rod is on. I've been fishing for 45 seconds and a legal flathead is boatside and into the net. Woohoo. A bit of luck on my side today. It clears the ruler (low 40s) so it is despatched and into the ice. Next I sink another bait and grab the bream rod to try a new plastic that was hand made for me by a friend. It is a normal 1/4 oz jighead but has a spinner glued on and painted eyes. It's a bit heavy for my rod but he swears they catch flathead and I give it a go. My friend who made it is a dedicated freshwater fisherman and I think it's a cool idea. The plastics themselves I'm told are hard to find in Aus and were a bulk buy from the US. I used the white pearl. Back to the story, I flick the SP for a few casts and I am on again for matching flattie. This is already the best fishing I have had in about 2 months and my first flathead on SP. Whoo! Meanwhile my bait rod is on again but it feels small. So I'm juggling rods now and pull in a small bream. Time to focus I say to myself. I cast the plastic again and I am on to what feels like a much bigger fish. My plastics rod is a 1-3 kg 7ft rod and a 1000 reel (4lb braid with 6lb FC leader) and its fairly well bent with a more than a few strong runs. I like what I see on the surface which turns out to be a fat 59cm flathead. A new PB for me and I have 3 fish (all I need) in a short time and I look like a bit of pro here so I wind the rods in and crack a beer. Next fish in the boat is another low 40s flattie by my mates GF and she is very happy to catch a local feed. I muck around with some more tiny bream on bait and the ebb tide is really slowing now and so is the flattie action plus its near sunset so we called it a day. Now I have flathead tails in the freezer so I can return the boat on Tuesday with fish plus a feed for my wife and I. And I put my mate onto a feed. Win-win all round.
  16. Sounds like a fun sesh! Well done. Love the weed in the photo. It looks so tasty...for a fish that is.
  17. Awesome job there mate. You don't even look tired!
  18. Are you sure? I still reckon it's a bream as it has a fork tail where Tarwhine does not. Happy to be corrected though.
  19. I bought some Chinese knock off lures before and was not impressed. The body might be ok but those hooks they use are cheap and nasty. Very easy to bend. So when you go and buy some new 'owner' trebles or what have you then the economy isn't there anymore. Well that's what I found with some fake 20g halco twisties that I bought off ebay.lesson learned.
  20. Sorry to hear scratchie. I hope you get the stuff back.
  21. Otolith extraction is on you tube guys
