  1. No such thing as silly question so here goes. Why do rods these days have exposed blanks under the reel? You know instead of cork or foam all the way to the base of the rod you only get part of the blank covered in a grip. What's the point and does it still work with rod holders in the boat? 2. Do you mean that you sent out a live yakka on 5lb leader hoping for big predators? Ha ha ha Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  3. Hey mate, have you tried chromies? I dropped two rats at my feet in the past week off Stockton break wall. I'm yet to land em but I've got the hook ups both times on a 20g raider or (knight). Interestingly both times I have had nearby fishos jigging up yellow tail and slimies. Maybe that had excited the kings now I think about it? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  4. This is a very good post. It proves wrong the very famous saying "she'll be right mate"
  5. This fish won't be wasted. It's being eaten by my mate's huskys. Happy days. Thanks for the advice.
  6. Ahh yeah was gunna eat it. Bugger. Thai chili fish cakes should disguise it...I hope.
  7. I'm having tapatalk problems on my phone. Working on it now.
  8. Caught this off Boat Harbor today on cooked peeled prawn. any ideas?
  9. I think your database would have to be HEAVILY guarded. If i was a hacker i would be targeting you to sell the information to thieves. Imagine the bribes you and your future staff would be offered. As you know, not everyone is a trustworthy as yourself. Sorry to focus on negatives but i would rather warn you than say nothing.
  10. Sorry if I am hijacking but I don't think I am as Hallidays Point is just up the road from Forster. Anyway I'm staying up at HP this weekend with the family and am thinking of fishing the rocks at black head. What would be a good target with all this dirty water around? Thinking of trying for pigs on bread/dough (burley with bread) or maybe spin some metals/throw some SP about. I've never been to these rocks so any advice regarding target species or location specific safety aspects would be appreciated. Yes I can bring along a family member for safety on the rocks. Also happy for any raiders to join me. Mainly fishing Saturday and Sunday morning.
  11. What size motor you got there? Looks quite large in the photo for 11 ft
  12. A mate got a small one (70 something cm) two weeks ago off Nobbys break wall up here in Newcastle. Lightly weighted prawn did the trick.
  13. That's really strange mate! Nice fish though
  14. Thats some great advice you've given
  15. Great post Ray, what bait may I ask? Stringy weed for both fish?
  16. At least you can catch blackies at all. Good job mate. I'm still trying to get my first.
  17. G'day mate, Just a question about Nearmap.com? I've not heard of it. Do you recommend this site? How old is the imagery? Why is it better than google maps? Thanks
  18. Also, can I tie a float stopper knot to my mainline? It is 8lb braid. Do I use a piece of braid or mono for this? Or, is it easier to tie on a piece of wool? If so, what knot is best? Cheers
  19. Gday Burnsy and Roberta, thanks for your reply. I have a feeling that joining this site was a wise move towards making me a better fisho so cheers. I have realised what I did wrong. I was fishing too shallow with a plastic stopper that hits on the top runner, therefore my stopper-bottom hook distance was about a rod length (6'6" for me). Next time I will use a stopper knot and find bottom, then come up from there. My other rod is a 12 ft surf rod but its too heavy and stiff for this purpose. As for the weed I plan to tie my hooks with a uni knot and leave a short tag where I will lay the centre of a length of weed. From there I will twist or plait down to the hook. Next time I want to place 1 split shot right below the float and one about 20-30cm from the hook. I have a 6 ft net which is just long enough with my short rod. Just have to be careful when it comes to landing. Thanks for the tips and the photo. You'll be the first to know when I have success.
  20. This is such a great post! I've read with such interest that I couldn't stop myself from giving em a go. They are a really beautiful looking fish. But I have a couple of questions particularly for those who fish Nelson Bay breakwall. Now I don't have all the blackie gear but I just wanted to see if; A) I could catch any with what I already own and see if I would enjoy this style of fishing. So today I had my first go at Blackfishing this afternoon but no luck. As mentioned I was fishing Nelson Bay breakwall and on the marina side. I fished both sides of low tide. How deep should I set my bait? I think I had my float well-weighted so that part I am happy with. The rig used was very similar to Roberta's attachment in this post (rig with 2 hooks). I sourced my weed from Stockton as attached? Would you expect that I would get bites on this type of weed? I know this type of fishing is seen a bit of a black art (ha ha), but I was disappointed not to get a single down. What was promising though was the guy walking past with a half dozen in the bucket. I tried to start up a chat but the guy might have been keen to home and eat em as opposed to chatting to a stranger! Dont blame him really...
