  1. Hey Rick, I spoke to you at the ramp that day as you were heading out. Saw you again the next morning DRYING out. Wasn't sure it was you but guess it was. I had the red/white milligan. Fish I caught on the Tuesday. Threw another 10 nice ones back but as you found out the current stopped and the fish slowed right down. Seems things have kicked off again and my mate who lives there has had a couple of nice trips early in the week and home by 0800.. Cheers, Nipper.
  2. Well another great trip to Crowdy is done and dusted. Had some great fishing and not so great weather the second week. While the fishing was good with plenty snapper to 5kg, heaps of pearlies and kings a few highlights stood out. First of all was my first sighting of a great white hanging around the boat. I have dived in the cages with them off Mexico but not whilst out fishing. Its wasn't huge but at 3.5metres I guess it was a great sight. Had a few half hearted thoughts about having a chew on the outboard but just nosed it instead. After fishing the comp over the long weekend my other main objective was to get my nephew a large reddie. He was staying with us for the remainder of the week to fish. It has been a couple for years in the making after a few false starts we got out on his first day with me and ended up with 9 reds and a couple of about 2kgs for Toby. He was pretty chuffed. My nephew is always asking how the big snapper fight I said you'll hopefully find out next time out. Well couple of days later and a late start due to weather prediction getting it wrong we left the house at 0615 and with a bit of NE forecast I didn't go to far from the ramp. Well first fish after 15min was his first big snapper. 4.8kgs and 74cms. He was over the moon. Very next fish he caught a pearlie which was another first for him. I said to him that my job is done and now anything else is a bonus. We ended up catching a few more reds then had early finish leaving at 0945. Had some video of the GWS but its a bit big to upload. See what is next on his bucket list. I think a nice king is his next target species. Anyway once again great trip away. Pretty good way to bring up his 15th birthday. Cheers Nipper
  3. Yea, fished up same area on the Sunday and had good day on the kings up to 6kgs.
  4. Hey guys, Looking to replace my tyres and wheels on my dual cab Ford Ranger 2013 XL 3.2 TD Auto. Only got standard rims and tyres. Not much off road use , maybe bit of beach driving but mainly towing boat up to two tonnes up and down the highway. Thinking A/T either Goodyear, Goodrich or Bridgestone 17 in. Any recommendation muchly appreciated Cheers Nipper
  5. We were at 33 54 line on the and not sure of longtitude but 1000fathoms. In an 18ft Cruise craft. Take plenty of fuel and then add a bit more to make sure. Make sure your radio is working before you leave the heads as all we heard out there was people asking for a radio check all day. There does seem to be a dead spot out around are for some reason on VHF 21 so be patient. Also has a pen n paper ready to write down GPS numbers as people who hook up let others know to share the action area.
  6. yea my mate of his wife including their 10 year old daughter fish a lot and do very well especially out of an 18 ft boat
  7. Pickles, back in the day during my time as a deckhand on commercial long line fishing vessels we learnt how to look after the fish the best way possible to have the best product. Its a shame that a lot of people don't know how much ice is really needed to look after fish. When ever possible it is best to have at an absolute minimum 50% of weight ice to fish body weight. Example. 25kg ice for a 50kg fish. I understand it is hard t have a lot of ice some days but its something worth thinking about A couple of 5kgs bags of ice at the servo at 0500 in the way to the boat on a days bluefin fishing is going to leave your self short on the best icing for the fish. On a side note, whilst I'm on a topic when we used to export tuna to Japan it would take at least 24hrs for a 100kg fish's core temp to get to 4 degrees C in full ice slurry before it could be legally shipped overseas. Its a topic that needs to be more talked about and how important it is to look after your prized catch for best quality on the table. There are some great fish bags and eskies these days but im guessing that the amount of ice needed is on the back burner in the mind at the beginning of the days fishing
  8. Fished with my mate and his family yesterday off Sydney, Finally found them in 1000fathoms and got a triple header boating two. Put the lures back out took a few pictures and got half way through a chicken roll then got another double header catching both fish. Long day and now to go finishing processing the fish after being in ice slurry all night. Plenty of fresh tuna to eat and give away.
  9. As Scratchie mentioned, he gets most of his Snapper in the top 2/3 of the water. To add to that point the good catch of reds I got last week were from being anchored up in 35-40 m of water and with a bit of current we only used whole pilchards with no lead or the size of a pea and were spewing up berley in the boat.
  10. Fished last week with my mate and had some ups and downs with the reds. With days of southerly wind and northerly current things werent what we had hoped for. Had a day of 12 fish including a couple of 4kgs fish and out wide it was jacket central. Anyway, the final day the moons aligned and no wind and the current had changed and went south. We did have a late start due to early rain and forgetting the sounder but still having gps numbers and good ole fashion land marks we had a great mornings fishing. All the fish were caught on bait but did get dusted on one nice fish on a plastic. Cheers Nipper
  11. In regard to the braid as backing and claiming records. As it was mentioned most braid will break over there labelled breaking strain. The new rules from IGFA state that only a minimum of 5 metres of mono topshot in the desired line class is required for testing requirements so you can use what ever type and size of braid you like. These rules are allowed everywhere except NSW at present so the records for broadbill that have been caught are caught in Victoria and are made under the new IGFA and GFAA rules and probably have heavier size backing with a mono topshot of the line class they are fishing. Hope that clarifies any questions.
  12. Yes under the light house in the gutter is good fishing. Caught plenty of tailor on the northern end under that wash on the protecting reef. Even caught a few nice reds(2kgs) there on occasions. Just use whole pilchards.
  13. Nope just certified scales. Never been one to worry about length if its legal.
