I have caught some reasonably large ones on bread in the past. I found them to be very smart animals - they would only ever bite if I was very stealthy and sneaked up on them. Others will probably know more about this than me though.
Hi all, just caught a bream, a tailor and 2 squid in the space of 15 minutes on the bottom in 10m among the Pearl Bay moorings. All good size too. Also caught this one, 35cm with lots of evil looking teeth. Any idea what it is?
Note on Longy - I helped a yakker who got wiped in the surf coming in near the ramp on sunday, it wasn't funny and he lost his rods too. Be super careful ocean side!
I caught a 60 cm flatty at Northbridge a few days ago, and a sole and a whiting last week but otherwise no great successes. That said I'm learning SP so it's prolly me! Keep at it mate I'm sure they're around the corner. There are many water access points around Sailors bay and sugarloaf bay, Google Earth does wonders.
Whitworths sells high quality epoxy. It's a much tougher and durable material than varnish. but it's very poor at UV protection, which is why timber boat tragics like me still use stupid varnish for brightwork. Should not be an issue for a rod though.
Subtropical species in MH... I wonder if the water has been warming or if they've always been here in small numbers? You should send the pics to a uni (the fish tagging folks?) and ask.
On blades, how do you handle them on snaggy bottoms? I love them too but they're bloody expensive to lose!
Hi Flickn, I wrote a fishing report about eating mackerel recently. They're staple food in much of Europe and I find the 20cm + models delicious. They have to be filleted right to remove the bones and being fishy, you'll only love the taste if you also like things like sardines and anchovies. Give them a go and tell us how you went!
