  1. Hi Raiders, Haven’t been out chasing Kings this week (busy at school) BUT Considering a trip to Norfolk to chase big Kings (also N.Z around Corrimandle area) and would love some feedback on time of year and charter operators from any who have been. Pickles
  2. I took “the boss” out today and she was quite excited to catch a legal king (“ almost better than shopping”). The Squid were a bit slow today, but heaps of Yakkas at all the common spots and Kings we’re slow too. All the kings were either outside (12 mile) and Long Reef. A few rats in middle harbour though. Ive been getting XXL cuttlefish (2 at Long Reef = 9.7 kg) and the candles from these are the hot shot, youbeaut bait for Kings - like Tim Tams.
  3. Well done Sambros. Nice film work too. Those “red eyes” / Big eyes” are a bit of a nuisance, but last time we kept some for the table. Once skinned and filleted, they were pretty good eating - a row of bones down the middle, so a small top and bottom fillet strip and they definitely need to be skinned. A buddy who gets them pretty regularly told me they are also called “Happy Moments” as the pain from a spike is similar to red rock cod and not fun. Pickles
  4. Brilliant catch Baz - I years ago, but Pretty rare off Sydney now. Well done mate.
  5. Great post Jords Boi, some big sedentary kings move into estuaries in autumn and winter and become very choosy about bait/food. Live or fresh (not frozen) squid are certainly the go, but live gars are excellent in autumn and not that hard to catch - small Owner “mosquito” hooks (no 12-14) just cover the hook tip (fresh yellowtail, squid or bread (gluten mix is good).
  6. September is good for kings, if they continue as they have, I don’t know if they’ll back off at all over winter? The off shore reefs are more consistent over spring though
  7. Hey big Neil, I keep most of the Squid for bait, if big calamari (they are getting bigger as winter progresses) I use the head and flaps for bait and take the canopy for eating. the best bait is actually the guts including the ink sac. As winter approaches they move to the offshore reefs (12 mile, the Peak, Longie) and only a few stay in the harbour, but these are often stockers. I’ve also caught Cobia in autumn / winter live baiting for kings. bob
  8. Good one Scratchie, nothing wrong with catching someone else’s fish
  9. Hi Raiders, the Kings in Sydney Harbour have been a little slow over past few weeks - somewhat spasmodic, but squid have really picked up in size and number. I went out with a fellow raider last Wed (Duncan) and we fished for 30-40minutes and boated 6 nice squid, mostly green eyes (calamari), but interestingly there were 2 arrow squid with them. We boated 6 Kings, 2 keepers, all 62-65cm. It was really good to get out and share with a fellow raider. bob
  10. Went to the Fad on Friday, all the big Mahi Mahi seem to have gone elsewhere, but there we heaps and heaps of these little dollies. Also heaps of these striped black fish - think they are trevally, very slimy- all went back. Any clues on the species, I’ve never caught them before?

  12. 80 foot mark directly in front of Barrenjoey

  13. It been a while since I’ve caught Terraglin off Sydney but I headed out during the week to drop for kings with live Yakkas. The yellowtail hey have been XXL of late at my bait grounds, so much so that I’ve keep a few for sushi. A mate put me on to this and I tried some in disbelief. Filleted skinned and deboned they are really good. with Soy and Wasabi. Anyway I dropped the first of the Yakkas down and within 2 minutes I had 2 nice Trags at 50cm, they kings moved in and the fun started. I was fishing solo and 3 rods out with 25 livies in the bait tanks (2 bait tanks). I won’t do this again as I was getting multiple hookups and multiple tangles. After 15 Kings (kept 5) all over 65cm and biggest going 70, then I got smashed by a HUGE king. I was fishing 50lb braid on a Stella and demon blood (64CJ) with 80 lb Fluro. I kept it on for about 4-5 mins, but when it woke up, it took off like I’d hooked the Many Ferry - one long run, head shaking run straight for the bottom that I couldn’t stop and the Stella has 35lb of drag. After that I was so knackered and cramping hamstrings, so decided to say “Thankyou God” and head in early. The weather report was not great that day - showers, 2 m seas and 20kn southerly, but they got it wrong and turned out calm and pleasant.
  14. Hi Neil is your location Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area - MIA, if so a bit far to get together - if you’re a non- smoker, I’d be happy to go out with you chasing Kings, show you how I do it.

    can you PM me?

    1. big Neil

      big Neil

Hi Bojulabah. Yep, I live in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Don't smoke but enjoy a few beers after a day on the water. However, I drive a lot so limit the drinking to just a couple. I have only just noticed your message (sorry). Are you still working and what sort of availability do you have for your Kingfish ventures. I have never caught one and these days I don't fish salt very often. I am retired so have a certain amount of leeway with my free time. Do you actually catch these fish in Sydney Harbour? Must be a real buzz. Anyway let me know your thoughts because I would dearly love to fish The Harbour, have only been there on the ferry. (LOL). I'll look forward to hearing from you and once again apologies for not seeing your message, don't know what happened. Cheers, Neil

  15. Took a few newbies to fishing out over the past few weeks with mediocre results. Minimum catch was 3 and max 12, all in the harbour. Went out on Wednesday, weather predictions were not good, 20-30 kn SE, 2 m swell, but went anyway - Seriolitis (Kingfish fever) is a sad addiction. i rarely ever go by myself, but everyone else was working so I had to stay awake towing the boat, but it was worth it - 7 nice Kings and a 90cm whaler -put the pic in show length of tail for those not familiar. The most common species of sharks I’ve encountered have been Bronze whalers, Mako’s (sometimes called Blue sharks, but these are a different species, but bey similar), Ordinary Whalers, is in pic. Both species are good eating if you kill and bleed straightaway, otherwise they have an ammonia taste. The other pretty common species are hammerheads. Bull sharks are also relatively common. Some of these get BIG, and usually a fast & furious fight ending in bust up. On a late afternoon trip last winter (bigger Kings seem to be more prominent in afternoon in late winter) recently hooked a big whaler (estimated around 150-200kg, it a bit hard to tell when in the water) through the lip with a 9/0 circle and 120kg Fluro leader. It took 80 mins to get the side of the boat and fought hard like a king all the way - I thought I was going to be in the front page of fishing monthly - alas a shark. anyway, Kings are still on and don’t let the weather put you off Raiders.
  16. Reply to a few questions; I don’t mind sharing Proverbs 20:18 “Seek advice n all you do and you’ll find success” WHAT DETERMINES METHOD: I fish with paternoster rig and live Yakkas or slimies or fresh or live squid again paternoster. Heavy snapper lead and 8 or 9/0 circle hook. if livies I bridle with rubber band through the front of eye socket (look it up on YouTube). * WHAT DETERMINES LOCATION: Deep water and drop offs. * MOST IMPORTANT MOST IMPORTANT THING - IF YOU KEEP DONG THE SAME THING THE SAME WAY - YOULL GET THE SAME RESULT. * DONT USE ANY scents e.g. insect repellent, sun screen. keep trying different methods
  17. What a cracker season for Kingfish. Things just seem to get better and better. I don’t think I’ve boated one under 60cm for months and total this year is 132 from Long Reef and Sydney Harbour (mostly the harbour) and not any particular location - they seem to be every where - North harbour, The Heads, Sow and pigs, Clifton gardens, even around Gladesville and off the Opera House. Last week I boated. 87 and 92 just in front of Doyle’s Se food restaurant - (thought of asking if they wanted to buy some fresh kingfish - only joking I know this is illegal). they have been taking Yakkas, slimies and even pilchards, so not hard to get, but they are hard to hold and I’ve lost some thumpers on 80lb Fluro leader and 60lb braid.
  18. Great report Abs, Jews are great fun -been really good number this year
  19. Circle hooks are great on Kings, dolphin fish, salmon and other Pelagius, but I wouldn’t bother with whiting or bream - OK for flatties.
  20. Thanks for replies so far, the squid never seem to last more than a few hours, but Yakkas and slimes last all day. I guess I was asking advice from those who have set up a second livebait / cutting board as I have only ever had room for one and Kingies around Sydney are going nuts. I’ve caught over 100 since December, only about 20% legal though and most of the legal ones released.
  21. Well done Sam bros, - what plastic did you hook the King ? I’m out twice a week (when weather permits) - I’ll look out for you (490 Quinny Fishabout with Blue canvas Bimini). Although 6lb is light, Ive bloated legal kings on bait jig rigs fishing for Yakkas - admittedly in deep water and it was a loooong fight and was certain I would get busted - just lucky I guess - it’s lots of fun though.
  22. I’m looking to get an integrated live bait tank with cutting board as I need a second live bait tank and no other space (that doesn’t significantly reduce my fishi g space). If I mix squid and livies, the squid chew the livies up of attack each other. I would appreciate others experience (and maybe some pics) thanks bojulabah. Kind regards Bob Pickworth
