  1. Hey mate, Spent a week at JB over the New Year break, and have done so for the last 7 years. Found it generally very quiet, maybe it was the 10,000 boats out there but my father in law reckons it could of had something to do with all the sharks that had been cruising around. Managed some squid, bream, flathead, wrasse and snapper but as i said generally pretty quiet with none of the species we were targeting actually caught, we even hit out "go-to" spot for a few drifts for only small snapper - we go there when its a bit slow for a nice mixed bag but no luck this time round. Will be heading back down over the Australia Day break to try my luck again. For squid - anywhere around Murrays Boat Ramp where you find the weed. Grab a handful and head to the lighthouse and downrig for kings. Good luck!
  2. Hi all, Was looking at getting into some lures this summer down at JB over the holidays and have been doing a bit of reading but wouldnt mind some feedback. I'll be mainly boat based and chasing kingies. Ive read a lot of good things about the rapala xrap lures and inparticular the slashbaits (sxr14). Just curious to know if these are suitable for kingies and ths likes. Also would they be any good off the beach or breakwalls? Cheers! Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
  3. Hey Guys, Just picked up a 7foot 1-3kg abu veritas rod today. I'm looking at chasing some bream, flatties and the like from land/boat with sp's and bait. Was wondering what reel to best match it with. I have been looking at the Aernos FB 1000, Exage 1000 and the Abu Garcia Orra 2 Sx. I'm leaning more to the Aernos, for the 3kg drag, 200g reel weight and spare spool. Would be great to hear everyones thoughts. Cheers.
  4. Cheers I'll look into it..and will definately check out the posts
  5. yeah..very similar in appearance
  6. yeh just did a quick google search..think your right
  7. lol not your fault mate..oh well
  8. that first pic wasnt the best..looks like a hairtail to me?
  9. Its always great being out there regardless of what you catch. Been chasing jewies for a while now with no luck. Its just nice to head out for a flick and actually hear your reel buzz consistantly instead of pulling in undersized bream or flathead or not catch anything at all
  10. Hi all, Its been a while since i got to wet a line, but we set off saturday to the Hawkes targeting jewies and launched the boat at about 7pm. Hit the spot with some fresh/frozen squid and some fresh yellowtail. I managed one hookup and good run before i dropped whatevef it was within the first 20mins. Good start. Had one or two more hookups and managed to get a big hairtail to the boat before he chomped the line and swam away. Had about 10 more hookups on what was no doubt more hairtail before i managed to bring one into the boat, not bad, but not a jewie. Found ourselves sitting there after the tide turned at about 11pm, all 3 of us dozing off in the darkness then bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!! wow!! my mate locked up and set the hook, and one huuuuge run some pretty agressive headshakes and ping! gone...... After hooking up to hairtail all night I'll say that was NOT a hairtail. I've never fished or caught hairtail but i found that theyre very consistant in how they strike, real slow and long pulls on the line and theyre on, where as thia was just smash grab and run like hell..the one that got away, again! All in all, it was a good night with lots of action. No undersized pickers or pests, lots of hookups and runs. We may have found our own spot x . Also the action came in waves. 30mins on 30-45mins off, unlike the usual 20 minutes of action then nothing for the next 5 hours. Looking at heading back this weekend with a smaller tide and target jewies again, but am a bit unsure with all this rain now. Anyways, there it is guys, hope you enjoy the read.
  11. Hey all, headed down to Vincentia for a family holiday and got a whole heap of fishing done. So here goes a bit of a report of the more memorable moments. 1. Headed about 6km outside the heads looking for some good sized reds, only managed 1 flatty going 83cm before the weather turned and we headed back in. 2. Went out late arvo with the wife and kid for about 14 squid then went home for a feed. Left some for bait of course. Later that night headed down to the beach to try my luck for some jewies or sharks. Hooked up first cast, had 1 massive run and some huge headshakes before it busted off. A guy came running over saying he heard my reel scream. After a few expletives, and a swig of my sandy beer i baited up again and out she went. 1 more hook up and run, no headshakes though meaning it was probably a ray and that was it for the night. 3. Had to head back to the beach after getting busted off by what was no doubt the biggest fish i would've caught. Had the tide, and was the day after a full moon. took some squid that i caught the previous day and first cast hooked a ray, confirming my suspicion from the night before. 2nd cast same as the first night, massive run, headshakes and gone...jew or shark?? 2 more hook ups after that which were probably rays snd i was done for the night. 4. Tried some more landbased at husky boat ramp, husky breakwall, stoney creek, murrays boat ramp, nelsons beach, bream beach and hole in the wall with not much success apart from some flattys and the odd whiting and tailer using everything from squid strips to servo prawns and plastics. I must note that most of these landbased trips were at random times not really looking at tidal, moon, wind, weather conditions, more so just to get out and kill a couple of hours when the little one was sleeping or the wife was out shopping. 5. Headed out for bait and managed the 1 squid and slimy. Sliced em up nicely and drifted around hyams beach to catch some snapper, another flatty and a morwong that went 42cm. 6. Grabbed some more squid again and drifted bowen island only to get pestered by those bloody jackets. Managed a whole heap of undersized snapper, some wrasse and a nice 44cm snapper on ultra light gear which was probably the fishing highlight of the trip. She gave me a couple of really good runs and had the 1-3kg rod bent over the whole time. 7. Back to husky boat ramp with foe a sp session and managed 2 flattys, 36 and 55cm along with some more undersized stuff. All in all was a good 2 week stint with the family and came home with some good fish but more importantly will take alot of info from the trip regarding tides, moon phases, feeding times, beach fishing etc that i gathered from random trips at random times and a lot of good info from some helpful locals.
  12. havent been to the spit in a while..used to get a bit of mixed bag but i found the spit was either firing or it was completely dead..best to get some squid on the north side and cast out as far as u can aiming for the hole, crack open a beer and wait
  13. great report, better results..well in!
  14. Hey all, Hit my new spot on the georges river down near picnic point on the 23rd at around 10.30am to fish an hour or so either side of the tide. Grabbed some fresh squid and some prawns and there i was. Threw out a whole squid on a sliding snell rig, set the baitrunner on my reel and moved over a couple of meters and threw some prawns and plastics. Nothing. Decided to head back around 10.30pm that night to fish the tide again. Same deal, whole squid and some prawns. Hooked something on a prawn, and although it looked to be pretty decent on my 2-4kg outfit, it spat the hook. After that, nothing. I called it a night at around 2am and started going over the weather, tide, moon, barometer etc to see what went wrong as i was sure I'd had the conditions spot on. Looks like that spot just isnt the spot i thought or hoped it would be. Either way I'm off to jervis bay in a day or 2 and should be down there for 1-2 weeks so I'll be looking to target some kingies around point perp over the break. Will keep you all posted.
