    what weather app?

A bit about BOM and other weather apps: https://www.fishranger.com.au/aussie_fishos_and_weather_apps And some more reading: https://www.fishranger.com.au/the_truth_about_weather_sites https://www.fishranger.com.au/weather_site_data_source_comparison
  2. Finally time (this week) came for annual 'summer' Snowy family trip. Usually it is 3 days of daily hiking in the mountains till last kitchen in Jindabyne is still open. Cold and wet early mornings are fully at my disposal and obviously used for fishing. Every visit I try something different, and this time (after spending a bit of time on YouTube and FB alpine fishing blogs) I decided to concentrate on minnow style HBs. First morning was at river in Jindy area - after a number of casts and trying over half dozen of various HBs - finally got something on a line in a deeper river section, and after 3 sec of real fun - lost a 25-30cm brown trout. Met 2 excited fishos from the coast though. 2nd morning - Jindy lake - a bit of a walk along the shore, plenty of casting to deeper parts (I just hope Navionics was right) and just a few young lure followers. 3rd morning (shorter session due to hotel checkout) at river again, however most casting done close to structure - plenty of followers, 2 fish lost, and finally nice 27cm brown trout landed on a black gold HB, and then released back into the river. Time to pack stuff, checkout, more hiking and long drive back to Sydney.
  3. Animal cruelty does not stop on farm animals - just check a petfood section at any big supermarket or specialised store as an example. Do you want to make your dog or cat vegetarian or vegan too to match your lifestyle - easy and legal! What is their actual choice - eat or die! Industry does not give a duck that it is against what cats and dogs were eating for thousands of generations and what sicknesses it may lead to - as long as it brings more money. And according to 3-pages 2-columns AJP policy on companion animals - it does not bother vegan "friends of nature" too. Also, most of mentioned Swiss fishing is in alpine waters, and is quite comparable to NSW alpine freshwater fishing regulations i.e. it is nothing like Sydney Harbour, coast or offshore fishing. Local fishing restrictions is only issue for fresh expats there. 30min-1.1/2hr drive to another spot across most of borders, and your fishing problem with live bait or C&R is solved.
  4. Yes, it is. Just not as farmers suicides level in rural Australia due to lack of support. Each party has its own priorities.
  5. No more ACT-legalised vegan products for them - until common sense returns to party policies and positions.
  6. Here is another opinion on 'a succesful 18-month trial': https://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-12/conservationists-concerned-about-nsw-bowfishing-trial/7082632 https://www.smh.com.au/environment/controversy-over-bow-fishing-for-summer-carp-trial-20151223-glu8rn.html Why not just give people some reward for catching and bringing carp to some disposal point - like for those cans or bottles - rather than spend more money for the developing and monitoring age-limited bowfishing program and watch those smelly rotten carps along river banks?

I got your point too. I guess Fisheries heard about research of undersize fish many times particularly from students and other backpackers already. On a serious note - a simple call or email to Fisheries (as these people have the rights of checking licenses, bags and other limits on the spot) would clarify their position in regards of legality of this matter, and required procedure in case it is really for research.

My opinion: if you purchase live undersize fish legally - then you can keep it, bake it, fry it, give it to your neighbour's cat. If you caught undersize fish then you are not allowed to keep it, you must return it to water immediately with the least possible harm. I cant comment on commercial fishing operations.

I would avoid keeping species with min legal size.
  10. Photo attached. Could not find the one on a 'boat' as old photos were back uped somewhere during old phone replacement. A few other things. - another/bigger waterproof bag - to keep a small bag (with finder/battery) and a transducer with its cabling together and as extra layer of protection - when transporting or going through surf with some chance of U-boating. - blue promotional bottle cooler with zipper protects transducer when moving places - blue foam ring helps keep trans leg in a fixed position related to kayak. - carabiners - to keep the bag with goods connected to a kayak. - 1.5l water bottle is just for a size comparison. A bit of sweaty challenge in this DIY project was a making a hole in a softer Alu stick (to connect a transducer) with a screwdriver LOL (due to limited tools in availability), the rest was a piece of chalk 😀.
  11. My setup is portable - DIY, may be considered a bit ugly, however cheap, light and does a job for a kayak. - Lowrance 4 or 4.5"? with sonar/downvision/Navionics - 5L? waterproof bag from Kmart (holds finder + battery on the bottom and protects from most splashes and any water inside kayak) - battery box -small Sistema from Wollies, - batteries - rechargable AAs from Aldi, aprx a dozen from memory. - wiring/ AA batteries case- from Jaycar - removable transducer arm - cut and bent aluminium 'stick' from Bunnings. Lasts 3 of 2-3hrs sessions (enough for me), all batteries have to be removed at home and charged, then packed back. Total weight of battery setup - 300-350gram. Almost forgot - removable fishfinder hood (protects from direct sunlight and also splashes) - half-cut 1L Weiss ice cream box. I think they do not sell it here anymore since the company sale, all goes for export.
  12. I think this might be the the source of FM article - SLSA Safety Coastal Brief 2020- Rockfishing. Published in April 2020 . Data for 2014-2019. 83% no lifejacket. 53% Asians, 25% no swim etc etc etc. Online link to full free report: https://issuu.com/surflifesavingaustralia/docs/csb_fishing_report_2020
  13. I fish for bream and flatties with small gangs . It is definitely not mainstream however topic was raised regularly on aussie forums 10+ years ago. Gang consists of 2 hooks size 4. Gangs are custom made from baitholder hooks - with plenty of trials and errors. My usual bait for bream - chicken stripes, sometimes salted pilchards (1/2 to 1/6 depending on pilchard size). Gangs allow longer (in terms of size and fishing time) presentation of the bait. Rarely chewed any leader or swallowed hooks and as most (98%) of hooking bream and flatties in the corner of mouth. I am not going back to single hooks incl circles for those species.
  14. I think HWS is more a nice new marketing term than a 'system' - in addition to 25+ existing TT jig heads designs. I fish with front weighted jigheads in 'open area'. And use weedless jig hooks near structure/snags/weed - custom sinking speed can be achieved by easily attaching lead splitshots on the bottom of the weedless hook, angle of sinking - by moving them (center of gravity) to the hook front or back. And it is much easier to rig it on most Zman SPs.
  15. Mate, think if you just want them or need them. ISO is s kind of fishing on it is own. And tele rod action is generally more suitable for bait than lures. I got couple of cheaper (JW) tele rods - 10' and 6' in the beginning of my local 'fishing career'. I still use 10' when rod portability and weight are more important than targetted fish fighting ability e.g when hiking/fishing in NPs loaded like mule with other 'important' stuff . It is useless on the beach as once sand gets in it (through wind, humidity/condensation or just a drop) - you will get a new permanent custom rod design, and it will be difficult to wash the sand out later. 6' tele rod had one overseas trip, and serves as a portable safety flag pole on my kayak.
  16. I witnessed similar thing at Batemans Bay rock wall at night. The guy (still teenager) broke his mates Saltiga Demon rod on the first large lure cast, and felt very devastated, however caught his first (1m+) Jewie on lures later, and everyone went celebrating. No crack in a rod is worth a crack in relationship.
  17. May be just sandals. I have Teva boots (which is not part of their major product range), and I fell so many times on uneven and wet surfaces while wearing them due to poor boot design - that I would not wish them to my enemy.
  18. Yes, it was. Alex was sharing a lot of intetesting stuff (except his secret spots - to my dissapointment 😭) and answered questions, and also free PFDs at the end. The room was packed (at least in my session) - however there were not many people of cultural background that was mainly listed in Randwick rockfishing report. I would say - it is better to organize such events with the involvement of local tackle stores where those people live and shop.
  19. Here is another activity to the list. Enough dangerous and minimum skills required.
  20. Totally agree with you Yowie. I am not a detective, however worked remotely or overseas with people from all continents 'in their own natural habitat'. Cultural differences can be large, even sometimes opposite. As an example, no matter what company policy states - at Aussie white-collar workplace - people can joke about religion, at European one - about gays. Never heard (and hardly can imagine) the opposite. But the problem of this society is that you feel that you have to tell that you are not a racist just to mention differences between people of other background, same as from me - expected to have minimum accent (english is neither my first nor second, and I have serious doubts about the third language) and behave like 'average Aussie' at work. There are also big differences in fishing education and regulations . E.g. in Germany you had to pay and take 2 days course and then pass the exam to get a fishing license, in Switzerland you had to report all caught fish each time (for restocking purposes) on top of 1 day course and exam, in Australia you just pay a few bucks for a fishing license (in half of states - for free) and then complain that the government did not put enough 'danger' signs in 20+ languages in 8 size font.
  21. Great session! How do you cook Yellowbellies?
  22. Good report. Interesting marlin pack photos!
  23. For searching 'Halco lures' on forum may be try option 'Halco AND lures' that appears below the search field after first search results run. For recent relevant search results on forum (e.g when not 100% sure of specific word usage in the topic) sometimes google search does a better and faster job - just include word 'fishraider' and whatever you are looking for. Did you try to cut or flatten barbs on trebles instead of replacing for singles?
  24. I wish speedy recovery to all.
  25. If you are interested in european models incl. telescopics - check Aussie store Adore Tackle, though their prices could be far from affordable unless on sale. Also, if you are interested in Shimano - look also at NZ online shops, some of them deliver to AU. NZ Shimano products and price range differs from AU Shimano.
