  1. Cheers everyone, hopefully there are plenty more to come! I'm not too sure how to put a pic in this comment but ill do my best.
  2. Mate! that is absolutely nuts! Ive just bought a boat with my brother and on our first fish off it, i had a live squid down deep off cronulla. Whilst bringing it in i felt something pulling it back but not like a fish. It was a monster squid. Unfortunately couldn't land the giant but it was amazing to see nevertheless. Were you using a massive squid jig for this? How deep were you dropping the jig?
  3. Awesome catch mate, just landed my first kingy off the port hacking yesterday. Wouldn't mind landing one of these bad boys either. Nelson
  4. In what has been an amazing few weeks, everything has come together for me to land my first kingy! A couple years back I decided that catching a kingie was a dream and did what i could to make it happen. As soon as i found out that live squid was a killer when it came to catching kingies and other pelagic fish, catching squid became my first goal. I bought myself a light Shimano setup, lost dozens of red and pink Yamashitas (2.5s and 3s) squid jigs but finally got the hang of it. After my first attempt of actually cooking up the calamari and arrow squids i caught, there seemed like there wasnt much chance that they would end up back in the drink as bait, rather than on my plate. They became salt n pepper calamari, squid ink pasta or paella, chilli stuffed squid hoods along with many other meals, but recently i decided it was time to have a crack at the real goal, the kingy. Myself and my brother splurged and bought ourselves a second hand, custom built 18ft centre console aluminium boat and some heavier Shimano gear and we thought we would give it a crack. Yesterday was our 3rd time on the boat and really only our second time fishing off of it. We went to my usual land squid spot in the Port Hacking and this time targeted them from the boat. After collecting 5, we were off to have a crack at some bigger fish not too far off Cronulla. We set up a burley trail, granted the water was likely too deep (100ft or so) but we thought it couldnt hurt. After an hour or so my brother copped the first hit, an undersized snapper that went on to fight another day. Within probably another 30 minutes, our burley trail seemed to rouse some excitement as we were surrounded by dozens of dolphins, who put on an aerial display, as well as numerous sea birds. Before long my brother got another hit. This time, a legal snapper. One for the BBQ. On our last squid it was almost time to head back to solid ground, the day already seemed like a success, however the ocean wasn't done with us yet. Zzzzz my rod bent over and this time it was something a lot bigger. In my inexperience i probably made a few errors pulling it in but nevertheless i landed my dream fish. A legal kingy (65cm on the dot). We headed home with our two legal fish, chucked the snapper on the barbie and ate some kingfish sashimi. What a cracker of a day! Getting the boat and all the fishing gear has been an experiment for myself and my brother, we are open to advise and happy to share what we have learnt. Keep fishing! Nelson
