  1. Steve, know my reply is overdue a bit. It's the avoca rocks that got me good.
  2. I personally use a 6'10" Lox Yoshi with soft plastics.3/8-5/8 jig heads. jerk shads seem to be the go. Cast, let sink, erratic retrieve = fish. Bonito are an awesome easy feed!
  3. Just bought another one. haha. I WAS running a pflueger patriarch 4000 which was a bit light. Changed to a Penn Conflict 5000. The extra weight of the reel makes it lovely to use!
  4. I assume your talking about the surf 1026? One of my favourite rods until a couple weekends ago until she broke! The top section works itself loose after an hour of casting or so. I had to consistently check it was in the lower section tight. Obviously didn't check frequently enough and the top section came out on casting, snapping the rod at the join. I previously tried a few different methods to keep the join solid to no avail. I don't know if this was just some strange issue with mine. Im going to get another one regardless. They send my 40-70gm lures kilometres and have some grunt in them when you hook up something decent! Caught quite a few kingies and bonito off the rocks with it.
  5. I live 5mins away from Bobbin head and used to fish it really frequently. There are actually quite a few sharks in that area! Have seen them cruising around as far down as Apple Tree bay under the bridge. Pretty sure they have been all bull sharks that i have seen there. Only ever had one incident where a shark thought my bream was better suited to him.
  6. As far as squid liking to be close to the ocean, I wouldn't say that's too correct. You would be suprised how far up they will get. Clean water is very important. Sand weed and structure are the ingredients required. Clifton gardens, cremorne point, Taylor's point, Palm beach, Jeffrey st wharf, pier 2, blues point, and a heap of others are great common spots. If your happy to search, you will find some amazingly good areas to fish that have few people. Jig selection and action is what is important with squidding.
  7. good work on the squid mate! This is the technique i use, generally in deeper waters. Will help your catch, also understand what colour jig to use where. After a while you will get the hang of it, will consistently catch squid, and know where to look!
  8. The quality alone of the jap jigs is enough to keep me happy! Cheap ones do work but I have seriously gone through so many due to cloth falling apart and stinkers falling out, etc. Not to mention sink rates and actions as relapse said. Definitely worth spending the dollars on the quality jigs!
  9. There is nothing wrong with the current system, and commercial fishos are against the changes too. They are restricted pretty heavily to how many days they can fish a year, and already have to buy 'shares'. The increase in shares required to fish still will put a lot out. All the hate on the commercial sector is pretty bad. They are making a dollar, AND helping us recreational fishos too. Anyone ever bought fresh hawkesbury squid from a tackle shop? These changes go through, chances are your local tackle shop will have imported squid from Thailand or Californian squid. Yuck.
  10. Haven't been up there for almost a month now. Anyone hit it up recently and seen much going on? Tossing up going there for fish or pittwater for squid.
  11. Thats putrid mate. I live a couple minutes away and go down very regularly. Never had an incident or seen any issues down there! There is also security down there at night. Really sorry to hear. You mean there were tossers hanging around in cars as you get sometimes or people fishing?
  12. Not new by any means, i think that squid fishos are just starting to catch on to the higher quality jigs, such as Gancraft, Evergreen, Fish League, Breaden, etc. I LOVE my gancrafts I also personally think the Harimitsus are the best quality of the cheaper jigs.
  13. What boat ramp did you use champ?
  14. they are definitely around. One caught accidentally at Bobbin head, and have seen others cruising through.
  15. Im avoiding buying more jigs until i sort a better storage solution for my day trips. I carry as little as possible with me on trips which is causing my jigs damage. Only using a small rapala tackle sling. that poison bait colour is a killer. Getting them from Japan im guessing?
  16. No, they dont shut the gates! They have put security on down there to keep things in order too, due to a few years ago peoples cars and boats getting ransacked at night and whatnot. Im down there very frequently for bait so if you see a teal Mazda RX7 say hi
  17. Interesting roylo I use mainly harimitsus with a couple yamashitas and gancrafts thrown in and havdnt had issues with the harimitsus. Got a nice collection happening relapse.
  18. I use red foil jigs in any location that may hold squid in low light conditions. There can be light or complete darkness and it can do it's job. The benefit of artificial light is it attracts more bait fish, which in turn attracts squid. The light isn't the requirement of the squid, the bait is.
  19. SquidMarks, I love Nemo! haha. Does quite well for me, which is why he is still in my 'in use' collection of jigs. Most of my Yamashitas have been retired. My local tackle shop MAY have some still too. Are rather exxy there though, which is probably why they are still there. As for the NAEBA, that is definitely one of my most productive jigs at night in the 3.5. Killer jig. My latest night time weapon of choice has been the Gancraft UOJYA 3.5 Yoidome Red
  20. Slide baiting is definitely a technique i have been meaning to try. As for the squid question, you can catch them any time of the day.
  21. Daiwa Tournament 8 PE1 and 20lb FC gets mine out easy enough Yes the swivel does affect the way the jig sinks, and its action when being jerked through the water. Not enough for most people to be fussed about, but more than enough when your pedantic about your squid fishing and want to increase every possibility of hooking up. Great idea none the less!
  22. Squid will be for a feed. Got another 6 or so large squid waiting to be used for bait, along with the tailor fillets. Looking forward to getting to this spot earlier during the day and giving it a good crack!
  23. Had a last minute fishing itch and decided i needed to find some new spots. Left home really late at 4pm, so i didnt get much of the last light unfortunately. Went for a wander and found a nice little rocky outcrop with a bit of wash. Chucked in a large dead yakka on a 7/0 circle, placed 3m under a float with very little drag set on the pflueger salt, while i set up my Lox rod with a 5/8th jig head and a 5" pearl white gulp jerk shad. Before i finished rigging up my plastic, i heard the drag clicking slowly on the rod with the yakka. did the drag up a little to feel very consistant pulses, confirming a LARGE squid. pulled the yakka back in to get the squid away and recast it. Abandoned the plastics plan and tied on a 3.5 Gancraft UOJYA jig in red. Cast, let it sink, whip whip whip, squid on. Not a monster but decent none the less. By the time i retrieved the squid the rod with the yakka was having some attention. Picked it up, put some pressure on and the hook was set. Not much of a fight considering my pflueger is loaded up with 50lb braid and a 60lb leader, and within a couple seconds had a 41cm tailor on the ground. Out went another yakka which went travelling at speed after 20 seconds! Tightened the drag and tried to put some hurt on but whatever it was didnt take the hook. 3rd yakka went out as the light completely went, left it for 10 mins before i decided to head to another spot in Pittwater with a bit of light for some squid. 1st location was quiet. fished it for an hour before moving to another location just at the peak of high. Managed another 3 before it went quiet. Tried flicking some hardbodies without any love.
  24. I was out the front of palm beach on tuesday near the weed beds hoping for something decent. Had a squid head out that came from a 37cm squid(hood length). Saw the line load up and start pulsing. Got it to the boat and chewing at it was the largest squid I have seen from palmy! Easily a 50cm hood. Was an absolute monster! Unfortunately he wasn't interested in a 3.5 jig and couldnt hook him on either of the 7/0 hooks. Second time I have had squid trying to eat squid.
  25. the larger one is only a 26cm hood. Was going to have a feed with them, but heading out on the boat tomorrow so they will be strip baited in the hope of something half decent! Twinfisher, i have used the egimax spray on and off. I am sure there are benefits to it, however i still catch squid without it and they make my jigs feel sticky/smell like donkey balls. I dont bother with it anymore, and try to improve my techniques instead!
