Hi All, Just a quick question. I'm taking my young cousin who's visiting from England squiding on Sunday evening. I'm thinking rose bay as it's easy and pretty reliable, but I'm just wondering if the westerlies on Sunday will effect land based fishing around the wharf there? Cheers!

From what I understand the stocking with bait inside is just instead of the traditional hook with bait. I've been wanting to do this bit fairly sure I have to wait till summer to give it a go.

Nice report. I'd love to go back to NZ now that I have an interest in fishing. It's such beautiful country, I reckon you could spend weeks on end walking the rivers and streams looking for fish.

I was the guy on the bride when you got there. You should've gone the other way away from the wharf for the squid, I got a few more littleies round there after I gave up on the Gar's at the wharf. Cracker Trevally though!

Yeah it was pretty tiny, this guy obviously thought he could eat something 3 times his size... I guess they're aggressive feeders.

Headed out again last night and caught my new record holder for smallest squid. That's it next to a 5 cent piece. Caught on a 3.0 jig, crazy!

On Sunday arvo Hrgh (Joel) and I caught up for a soft plastic session, but sadly with no luck at Watsons Bay or Rose Bay. Joel was after squid, and I've been having reasonable luck with them so we went round to the wharf as it got dark, but ended up empty handed. Not wanting to admit defeat, I went back to Rose Bay last night. While the sun was still up I got a baby Snapper (I think) on plastics, then a small whiting on a vibe. Then as it got dark I put on a squid jig and started to walk around to the wharf. On the walk I noticed small squid along the wall there, and ended up fishing that for an hour or more. The green eyes were there but seemed pretty timid, however I managed to get three. They were much smaller than the ones I've caught of the rocks, I guess good bait size, but they're destined for dinner tonight!

We get it a lot down in Tassie where I'm from. As a kid I remember seeing it pretty regularly! It's very cool, and a great thing to show people who have never seen it.

Wish you could get them land based, I'd love a good feed of crab!

Spend the cash on the quality jigs instead mate. I reckon that makes a bigger difference.

Nice day of fishing! Good to see your GF's enthusiastic about it! Mine is in theory, but she's usually too busy to come. I've managed to get her to tag along on one squidding trip at 6 in the morning which I thought was pretty good of her, haha. I need to find some nice easy wharves for her, she wasn't at all keen on the rocks.

Well I bit the bullet and headed to a shop today after work. Ended up with the Deep Striker and a 2500 Symetre to go with it. Gonna head out tomorrow morning and give it a whirl. Thanks everyone!

Thanks everyone! It is indeed a great feeling. Andrew, hearing about you heading out and getting those flatties has been driving me to get the line wet. I wished I'd hung around with you after and caught some too! Cheers Witha, I'd be up for company any time. Always want a chance to learn from others out there.

So I've been itching to head out and try my new found skills learnt at the soft plastics day but just haven't had the chance. Then today it was such a beautiful day and work was pretty slow, I managed to get off a few hours early. I headed home, grabbed my gear and got a bus up to Rose Bay where I'd heard I might have a chance at hooking a flattie or bream. I've never been there before, and it's a bit odd, like there used to be a beach there? Lots of stairs leading down into the water... But I heard along the shore was ok, so I set up and began flicking out. There are pipes leading out into the bay, covered in shellfish, so I guessed they were the structure I should be aiming for. Half an hour of casting and moving about a bit proved fruitless, then I found a spot where I was getting a few small hits from something, but not hooking up. After awhile more of no action I moved to a jetty, thinking about finding some better structure to cast at. A few cast at some pylons later and I was on! I saw the bream on pretty quickly, but it took some deep dives. All I could think about was how people say they go for cover and try to rub though you line, so when I got it up to the surface I was pleasantly surprised I'd managed to get it in. The water wasn't far down, but I didn't trust my 6lb leader, so I got down low, grabbed the leader in one hand and grabbed the fish in the other. I held him for a second or two as I lifted him up, then he mad a big wriggle and pop, the leader bust and he was back in the ocean. My first bream got away, and he was a biggy too, I reckon 30-35cm. I was stoked, I never thought I'd get a fish on SP so quickly! But the saddest part of the story is yet to come. Keen to get my line back in the water, I turned to my bag to get another lure out, only to realise I'd brought the plastics, but not the jig heads! I only had that one lure I'd rigged on the SP day! Gutted, I tied on a squid jig I had instead, but had no luck with that for the next hour so headed home as it was dark. Needless to say my enthusiasm is now set and I can't wait to get back out there!! Thanks again to nbdshroom for all the knowledge he passed on the other day, great stuff!

Thanks, yeah well the gen black seems like a good rod for me, but good to know I could give it a go at the beach, I'll just have to practice my casting I guess! When you say small steelies are we talking like a 7gram slice or something around that? I have a few slices but they're all 20gr+. I'm guessing that going heavier than the rod recommendation is a quick way to break your rod?

Thanks guys, sounds like 2500 is heaps for anything I'll be changing. I'll give the ci4+ a go and if it's too light maybe I'll just stick with the original plan on a symetre... What length is that t-curve Trout Stalker? I haven't fished the beaches yet, but it seems like you need a bit of length. I'm trying to imagine a big surf rod with a tiny 1000 reel!
