  1. Hey mate, I've got an RLF14 I use for lbg. I've got it paired with a tld 30 as well, running 50 pound mono (mainly for kings). An important issue for me was the length, they are 1 piece and I couldn't (easily) fit a 9 or 10 footer in my car. The rlf14 (8 foot) was perfect.
  2. Hey guys, through lack of big success live baiting with yakkas, I've moved to spinning up mack tuna and bonito and sending them out bridled on my overhead. The problem is, all the macks are dying before I send them back out, and whilst they are still twitching etc, they aren't swimming. If I can't bridle the macks and bonito fast enough, is it better for me to just quickly hook them through the nose and send them straight out? How long will they survive being hooked through the nose (or back)? And (considering I can't bridle quick enough) is it best to hook them down through the nose and out through the front of the nose (with the point facing the dorsal fin)? Thanks!!!
  3. When I target them, I've caught snapper up to 40 in the wash in Sydney off the ocean ledges. Literally a 5-10m cast. Always using berley!!!
  4. Hey all, Had a rare day off work on Australia Day, and the swell and general weather was looking poor, so a mate and I decided to scout some popular locations on the Central Coast with the intention of taking a couple of short fishing trips up there in the next few months. Arrived at the general location around 730, but spent about the next 1.5h trying to find the specific ledge. We finally arrived at the ledge and it looked incredible; we are looking forward to heading back there another time. Swell was massive and whilst it was safe, it wasn't enjoyable to fish it, so we chose a spot around the corner from the swell. We were fishing lightly weighted half pillies into the wash, always a lot of fun. I've had good success this year fishing unweighted from the rocks, pulling in snapper up to 45cm. However today my mate was the one getting the fish, 2 pan sized snapper and a 45cm as well... an incredible result from the rocks! I wasn't getting much so I switched to hawksbury squid, using the whole hood of a smaller squid. Straight away I hooked on to something massive; it felt like a rat king diving for structure! A minute or so later I pulled it up, a 49cm snapper!! Absolutely stoked! I really didn't know snapper that big were available so close to a ledge. We fished for a couple of hours after that, then got stuck in the long weekend traffic jam back to Sydney. I was fishing 30lb braid, 50cm of 20lb leader, down to a 2/0 hook. Fishing with salted pilchards and squid. Cheers!
  5. Its head looks like a cross between yoda and gollum...
  6. That's epic, well done! Keeping them for bait, or dinner? I love outfishing people standing right next to me
  7. Haha some of these responses are great! My gf is happy for me to go fishing but actually prefers I don't catch anything; that way there is no fish carcass in the bin, no scales around the sink etc! I've learnt to finish up 30 minutes early and clean everything at the fishing spot, so the fish come home just as you would if you bought it from a shop.
  8. Thanks! Do you put the float right in the wash or out past it?
  9. Congratulations! That must have been an incredible feeling, something I am really looking forward to!
  10. Hey all, I've been having some good success with fishing for luderick off jetties, however after trying a few times I haven't caught any at all off the rocks yet. What I don't understand is, with the swell and the chop, the float just keeps getting pushed around everywhere, going under, getting sucked out and generally not performing how I hoped. Where are you supposed to put the float, out past the wash where it can sit (relatively) calm? Any advice on using a float from the rocks would be appreciate. I use a running float rig. Thanks!
  11. Thanks for the words everyone!! Can't wait to get back out there! Tony - I collected the weed the night before, chopped the cabbage, rigged my rod all ready to go. Arrived just before first light, fish starting biting around 7-715... bled and packed up and in the car by 8. Quick shower then off to work. It's easier to manage the cleaning etc fishing with weed off a wharf, rather than fishing off rocks with spray, using squid/pilchards/worms as bait. Much less to clean! Filleted all the fish that night (took me longer to fillet and clean them, than catch them!) RUT - thanks for your kind words! I'll get in touch to take you up on your float offer Luc - I agree a 10lb leader is more than strong enough, and when I realised this I started to lift the fish onto the wharf. But I've got three leaders; a 10lb, 20lb and 40lb... and the 10lb just looks so thin! Howsy - I did keep note of the tide, it was more or less exactly around low tide. BUT (and I am a little confused here), low tide doesn't mean slack tide, correct? So it can be low tide but the water can still be flowing? Keep the reports flowing everyone! They are great to read Joel
  12. Hey all, My first ever report! The amount of joy I get from reading other people's reports and seeing the photos, compels me to contribute my own. I actually never heard of blackfish/luderick, pigs etc before fishraider, but everything about it sounded interesting. Almost like meditation, putting together a bizarre rig, going to source fresh cabbage and weed, waking up early in the morning, watching and watching the float, anticipating the down and reacting. Anyway I tried it a few times in the last month, only once was really serious, about 5 hours for just one drummer. It was a bad day with no swell at all on the rocks, and I was exhausted, but to actually validate the concept of catching a fish with weed, kept the fire burning. So about a week later I got a fresh batch of cabbage and string weed, headed down to the local wharf just before sunrise, and started to burley up with a mixture of chopped cabbage and wet sand. The cabbage I was using wasn't very long, so I preferred to use it for the burley, and the string weed for my hooks. About half an hour after sunrise I started seeing flashes deep in the water where I was burleying. At first actually it didn't dawn on me these were probably the fish I was looking for... until my float went under! Lift of the rod and bang, I am on, my first luderick hooked. Getting it to the surface I then realised my short net was not long enough (almost low tide) and this fish was fighting like crazy. In the struggle (read panic!) to work out what to do, the fish spat the hook. But that didn't matter! A few seconds later my rod was out again and the float already under... I lift the rod and I am! This one was massive... by this stage I had realised the net wasn't going to work so I had decided to try lifting the fish up onto the wharf in one motion. However... this fish was significantly bigger and I guess I doubted the strength of the tiny looking 10lb leader and the tiny hook. I got the fish to the surface and tried to guide it over to the steps where I could land the fish. Again the fish spat the hook A few moments later the rod was out again, with fresh weed, and this time I didn't care what size the fish was, I was pulling it up onto the wharf regardless! Float down, rod raised, and a few minutes later my first luderick was landed! What a great feeling!! The countless hours researching, watching videos, reading, buying rods, reels, floats, swivels, different lines, all sorts of hooks etc, all paid off when everything goes to plan. In the next 30 minutes I pull out another 8 fish, all pretty decent size. The two other guys fishing at the wharf didn't have a clue what to say! I think I could have pulled out another 30 fish if I didn't have to go to work. This was by far the most rewarding and successful fishing moment of my life, it showed me hard work does pay. 9 luderick in total, biggest going 34.5cm, then rush to my desk before 9am! Next time I'll try bring the gf along. Cheers!
  13. Hey all, After trawling these forums for the past few months and soaking up as information as possible (and feeding the obsession!) I think it's time for me to introduce myself! I'm Joel, 26 years old, lucky enough to live really close to some beautiful places to fish around middle head etc. I was travelling for a few years and since returning 18 months ago, I got out the old fishing rods I was given for my birthday 15/20 years ago. There is something about fishing that is good for the soul; the busier and more stressed I am, the more I need to get out on the water to go fishing and escape the world. I work every day so pretty much the only time I can spare is early before work, which suits me well because everything is so beautiful at sunrise, and it is incredible the amount you can achieve before going to work! Anyway, I immersed myself in youtube videos, articles, and this forum, reading and watching every day, starting my purchases with a rod and reel and progressively buying more and more stuff I probably won't need! Next on the list is the fishing kayak but there is literally no where (affordable) for me to store it. I'm sure I will find a way! Starting with bream, pinkies, flathead etc, I was beginning to catch fish consistently and after becoming slightly obsessed with luderick off the rocks, I am about to write my first fishing report! I can't wait for spring and summer and I've been practicing catching live bait in anticipation for the fish in the warmer months. Anyway, thank you all for the wealth of knowledge, photos, interesting reports and advice you all provide!
