  1. Cheers guys. Yep I'm thinking a trip up further north might be next, chasing some more murray cod. Cheers royce I will look into those frog flies and see if I can get my hands on some
  2. Very nice mate. Making me want to chase some trout again. I got so frustrated with them that I haven't given it a go for a couple of years haha
  3. Thanks for the replies. Yes it was a lot of excitement and fun. Yeah big changes mrs swordie. It's been very rewarding but also a lot of work. Yes the river is very muddy at the moment but we needed it to flush out all the weed, it was unfishable for quite a while
  4. Hi everyone, Its been a while since my last post, haven't been fishing so much lately. It's been a busy time between getting married, leaving Sydney and moving to a 100 acre farm, also starting up my own business and all with a 1.5 year old boy. Anyway I had the chance to fish for Murray Cod the other week and so I jumped at it. For a long time I'd dreamed of catching one on fly so I only took a fly rod so I wouldn't be tempted to spin. I managed to get in 2 morning sessions and an afternoon session. I saw some activity each time but it was the afternoon session that will stay in my memory for a long time. We arrived just as the sun was behind some trees so we had around an hour of light left. I was fishing with a black gurgler - a foam popper on my 6wt setup. First cast and after a few pops there was a blup! and I was on! I was so excited and my heart was racing. After about 5 seconds I dropped it... damn. Oh well good start. It was great having my mate there with me this time to share the excitement. For the next few cast there were plenty of swirls behind my popper but the fish kept missing the hooks. Again I hooked up but this time only for 1 or 2 seconds before I lost him again. Frustrating but also encouraging. Altogether I must've had 12 - 15 swirls behind my popper which kept the excitement up. Next thing I was on again! This time after a short tussle I managed to land it. What a beautiful fish. I am so happy to have caught one of these amazing creatures and even happier that I managed it on fly. A few quick photos and he was released again. I can't wait to have another crack at them sometime. It's given me some inspiration as well to try flyfishing for some local bass. When the manning river settles again after all this rain I will be giving it a crack. Thanks for reading guys and girls. Cheers, Waz
  5. Cheers mate, yeah it's beautiful and so quite. Didn't see one other person on the water all morning. Thanks mate, yeah I look forward to exploring I more and also all the other waterways around the area. Never tried for muddies before but I can't wait to get into some. Only have a couple of witches hat traps at the moment so need to get some other traps for muddies I think. Thanks mate, yeah same thing different place hey? Can't wait to get onto a few more.
  6. Hey Fellas, We've finally made the move up to the Mid North Coast. Managed to get out for a fish the other day on the Manning river on the hobie and did pretty well considering I've never fished the area before. Pretty good start to my new fishing adventures up here. The two bream and two of the flatties were caught casting along the banks with zman grubs, and the largest flatty on the drift on a zman grub again. It was a nice morning out apart from a bit of rain and forgetting my rain jacket. Cheers, Waz
  7. Cheers mate. Yeah there was bait about both times I was there.
  8. Cheers mate. Yeah hope I can tussle with that fish again!
  9. Thanks mate. Yeah squid in winter are probably the easiest way to get a feed I reckon. I don't know the bay that well to target much else successfully this time of year
  10. Cheers mate! Been trying to get a shot that I'd be happy to hang on the wall. Thanks mate. When I was in the cooks I was using 2" Gulp minnow grubs. Later in botany bay I was using 2.5" Zman grubs Thanks mate, yes I started with the light rod, 6lb mainline 6lb leader. Propecting for smaller fish like trevally or bream. Thats why I didn't think it was a big jew as I wouldn't had a chance but could've been a smallish one. I was just lucky it ran straight away from the bridge and I quickly followed in the yak to keep it away from the pylons. Cheers mate, one of the most enjoyable days I've had for a while
  11. Just a quick report from Tuesday. I had a day off work so headed back down to the cooks river to have another go at finding a Jew. Launched just after 6. Thought I'd throw a 2" grub around first to see if there were any trevs or bream about. Second cast hooked something and it took a big run, probably 40m. My heart was pumping. Got a fair bit of line back then it ran again and bit me off. Damn. Not sure if it was a Jew or maybe a real big trev. Pulled way more line than the 45cm trev I got a couple of days before so I'd like to think it was a smallish Jew. Nothing after that all morning. Pulled the kayak out about 10am. I was under strict instructions NOT to come home early. Woohoo that doesn't happen often. After two tries in the cooks I was really keen on catching something I could take home and eat! Drove around to La Perouse grabbed a coffee and launched off a beach. The sun was shining, the water crystal clear and my coffee hot! Couldn't have asked for a better day. But it did get better. Cast out a squid jig and let it sink. Lifted the rod and thought damn snagged on weed.... oh wait a second, I'm on! Over the next hour pulled out 4 x 20 - 25cm hood length squid and 1 x 10 - 12cm squid. Also noticed some nice looking areas with rocks and crevices between the weed so threw a zman grub in and pick up this, some kind of wrasse I guess. Peddled over to Molly point. Found some bust ups and got excited but turned out it was just slimmies. No other action. Paddled back and tried for squid again but they weren't interested anymore, just picked up one more small one. Headed home after that, pretty buggered after a big day on the water. Thanks for reading, Waz
  12. Until recently I haven't really been to interested in chasing Mulloway. All the stories of long nights without a bite and lots of waiting have turned me off. I knew that when I finally did have a go it would be with lures or plastics and picking the right times so I can increase my chances. Thanks to Swordfisherman being so generous in his reports I decided to try the Cooks river yesterday. The water way was new for me so even finding a place to launch the kayak took a little longer than I expected. By the time I was on the water and ready to go it was first light and a little later than what would've been ideal, but for the first time here it was helpful to be able to see my surrounding easily. I cruised down to a bridge and started throwing Gulp 5" Jerk Shads on 1/4oz jigheads. I didn't sound over the areas as I didn't want to disturb any jewies but fished blindly. Lost a few jigheads to snags and that was about as much excitement as I had. The tide was running pretty fast after a while and I was seeing fish on the sounder so I changed to a small soft vibe and threw it around for no luck. I was thinking the fish would be trevally so I changed over to a 2" Gulp Minnow on a 1/16th oz jighead and hooked up pretty quickly. A good fight started but was cut short by my leader snapping... I should have checked it, must've been damaged as it snapped halfway along. Rerigged and on again first cast. I was a good fight and came up with a 45cm Trev. That was it for the day. No more luck. Called it early and sounded around before I left. Anyone have any advice for me in regards to catching jews on the cooks? This trip was more of a suss out trip and I will have another go midweek this week. Cheers Waz
  13. Sounds like a dream trip! Hope you put up another report or two and let us know how the rest of the trip goes
